Jesus People Now Supporting Phelan?

A reader writes in:
"Apparently, Jesus People USA is now backing Molly Phelan for Alderman (The wife of JPUSA leader Jon Trott allegedly proclaimed her support on Phelan's Facebook page). Not quite sure if she has made some promises to them or just kissed up to them since their shelter is a few doors down from her campaign office. This is very interesting development since JPUSA has been long-time and loyal supporters of Helen Shiller. Based on Molly's campaign, it seems very hard to believe they would support her based on her public campaign platform. Is she making promises to them?"

The Spot's "Polar Plunge"

You know those crazy people who gleefully jump into Lake Michigan when it's freezing out?  Here's a little secret:  They live among us!

The Spot is preparing for its Fifth Annual Polar Plunge to raise money for the Special Olympics, on Sunday, March 6th, at 10am.  If you'd like to join them, please email The Spot and reserve your, um, spot.  Plungers get free breakfast and booze.

If you'd rather go the more conservative (and by that, we mean "saner" and "warmer"), you can make a tax-deductible pledge here.  Last year The Spot raised nearly $4,000 for Chicago's Special Olympics; and they're hoping to raise $5,000 this year.  You can help.

Community Meeting Regarding Edgewater Weekend Shootings

Although the crime occurred in Edgewater, not Uptown, some residents might be interested in going to the community meeting that Ald. Mary Ann Smith is holding Monday evening to talk about the Saturday's double homicide, officer-involved shooting and the wounding of a police officer. This is the email her office sent out on Sunday:

"Dear Neighbors,

As many of you have already heard from the media, we had a serious and unusual police/criminal incident in Edgewater yesterday. Within our neighborhood, there were incidents on the 5800 block of Winthrop stretching to Devon Avenue.

The police and our office will be available at 7:00 Monday evening at the Broadway Armory to discuss with concerned residents what occurred.

Thank You,
Mary Ann Smith, Alderman, 48th Ward"

Gunshots Reported On Wilson & Other Locations

We just got this in email:

"Timothy from the Avondale and Logan Square Crime Blotter here. I wanted to let you guys know that there were a few calls for gunshots going off in your community, about 15 minutes ago, when I was listening to Zone 2 for a few minutes. The first two calls came in at 1325 West Wilson at about 7:05pm for six gunshots with someone screaming. Then a third call came in about four minutes later at Leland and Beacon for one gunshot. Units #2311, #2312, #2313 and a Tactical unit responded to the calls and said they didn't see anything, although someone did wave down #2312 to tell them that there was gunshots at 4650 North Malden also.

I'm thinking some of your readers will probably have more information, but I wanted to relay this information to you from the police scanner."

Lots of cops responding... that's a good thing.  Reports of shots fired... not good at all, particularly with lines of people standing around the Riviera wating to get into the concert.

Oscar Night In Uptown

So who wants to see little naked golden men with swords?  Plenty of places to do it with friends in Uptown:
  • Crew's show begins at 6pm - sales on pitchers of Miller Lite, Mimosas and Beergaritas, and chance to win a $50 gift card by filling out your Oscar ballot
  • Fat Cat's party runs from 6pm to midnight.  Dress up as your favorite nominee or character for 20 percent off your bill. Features themed cocktails and Oscar trivia following the awards show.
  • The Spot says "Roll out the Red Carpet & Play Games, Win prizes, Drink a lot, & have a REALLY Great Time!"
A reminder that Uptown used to be The Hollywood of the Midwest and has a few Oscar ties itself.  Read these articles a wonderful reader submitted to us a couple years ago and win the trivia contest:

Feeling Powerless?

There's a power failure affecting parts of Uptown.  Lights are out, and some internet connections aren't working either.  We know it goes from Beacon to at least Magnolia, along Wilson.  East of Broadway seems to be okay.  Hope it gets fixed soon!

Update:  A recording at Com Ed says power is off from Ashland to Racine, and from Lawrence to Byron.  They hope to get everything back up and running by 3:30pm.

Eat A Pita

There's a new Mediterranean food place next to the Sheridan el stop called Petite Pita (3952 N Sheridan).  Some friends told recommended it, so we checked it out.  Nothing fancy, but good food and cheap prices, which made us happy.  It's been open for three weeks, and has late hours, especially on the weekends (Monday-Thursday, 11am-11pm; Friday-Saturday, 11am-3am; and Sunday, 11am-10pm), probably competing with the Mexican places on Irving Park for the bar-closing crowds.

You can check out its menu here.  It does dine-in and takeout.  According to this site, it also does delivery.  Its own website isn't operational yet.  Welcome, Petite Pita, we wish you much success!

Uptown Problem Building In Foreclosure

We posted about a month ago detailing the history of 1325 West Wilson (the Norman Apartments) and mentioning the building was up for sale.

Now Crain's Chicago is reporting that it, and another property in Edgewater, both owned by attorney John Klise, are in foreclosure.

Klise and Circle Management have been in housing court several times for these properties, and Ald. Smith went as far to work with the Chicago Department of Housing to yank rental subsidies from the Low Income Housing Trust Fund for Klise/Circle-managed buildings in the 48th Ward.

We hope a buyer can be found and good management practices are put into place for this faded beauty.

Read the entire article from Crain's here.

Nick's Picks

Continuing our regular feature of book recommendations from Uptown Borders' sales manager, Nick Taylor:

The Monster of Florence
by Douglas Preston with Mario Spezi

"Truth is stranger than fiction" is an old saying that comes to mind when recounting one of my most memorable non-fiction reads. As an old favorite in my bookstore career, I've pitched this book dozens of times. If I've hand-sold it to you, you are probably familiar with a rant that goes a little like this:

"You would really like The Monster of Florence. If you have ever read anything about Hannibal Lecter from Thomas Harris or seen any of the films, specifically Hannibal, that film actually used this case study in helping develop some of the more graphic parts. It simply accounts for the most horrific, documented scenes I've ever read.

"The book is divided into two parts, the first being the history of the murders and the second being the more modern day where the author finds himself, along with Spezi, as a suspect pursued by the authorities."

If quotes from life leave you disinclined, I must throw in again a reference to the substantial number of books I've devoured during my stay at the bookstore in Uptown (around 230 books since 10/21/2007) while marking this as a definite non-fiction favorite.

Through the pages you will witness Spezi recall devastating memories of the fourteen murders, bite down on your lip while tearing through the next gored image, and remain stymied by the killer at large in this, The Monster of Florence, A True Story.

Found Dog On Magnolia

Update: The dog and owners have been reunited. Good news!  Thank you to those who cared about the little guy and to everyone who helped him get back home.

A reader writes:  "We just found this dog in the 4600 Block of North Magnolia. He looks like he's well cared for, fixed ... and not overly hungry. He looks like a boxer mix.  If no one claims it this afternoon we will take to Anti Cruelty Society."
If you know who this dog belongs to, please contact uptownupdate@hotmail.com with your contact information and we will put you in touch with the reader who found the dog.  Please see our Facebook page for another photo.

Police Ask Business Owners To Register Security Cameras

This is from ActionUptown, written and distributed by Ald. Mary Ann Smith's office:

"The CHICAGO Plan is a Chicago Police Department initiative that works with the business community to attack crime and gang offenses and to help make Chicago a safer city. The CHICAGO Plan asks business owners across the city to register their privately owned closed circuit security camera systems and devices. As the Police Department responds to criminal incidents in the community, they can use any information or footage gathered from these security cameras to assist business owners and community members in the apprehension and prosecution of the criminals involved.

There are two ways that you can register:
  1. Complete the Chicago Plan form online via the Chicago Police Department's CLEARpath webpage at www.chicagopolice.org.
  2. Download and complete the Chicago Plan Form at your local district police station. Completed forms can be turned in to your District's Community Policing Office or faxed to the Chicago Police Department CAPS Project Office at (312) 745-1099.
Click here for more information on the CHICAGO Plan, and remember security cameras can be linked into the City's 911/ 311 call center through the Private Sector Camera Initiative as well."

You Should Be A Member!

We do love our ghost signs in Uptown, and recently found out about another one.  This one is for the Chicago Motor Club:  "You should be a member!"  It's located on the back of the building where the Sunlight Nail Supply is located, on the 4800 block of Broadway, between the strip mall and Just Tires, facing the el.

We really don't know how to date this ghost ad.  The Chicago Motor Club began in 1902, we learned from this link.  One of our older relatives had a suitcase with this logo emblazoned on it, dating from the 1960s.

It amuses us, though, that the sign was apparently targeted to people riding the el... presumably people without cars!

Update:  A reader sent us a link from the Uptown History blog of the Chicago Motor Club offices on Broadway in 1977.   In fact, even though that photo says it's at Carmen, we're positive it's the very same building with the ghost sign on it, at Gunnison and Broadway.  Compare the current facade with the one in the photo.  You can even still see the bracket on the building where the CMC sign used to hang.

So, it now makes perfect sense for the ghost ad to be painted on the back of the building.  The Texaco station in the background of the 1977 photo is where the strip mall is now.  (We love how the logo of the Motor Club is nearly identical to the Texaco service station just behind it.)

It's Chicago Restaurant Week 2011!

LM Restaurant at 4539 N. Lincoln is offering some great prix fixe options. Click here for more information or to make a reservation.

The deal at Bistro Campagne is so fantastic that it's featured as one of the top 10 deals on the Huffington Post. Check out the prix fixe options. Click here for more information or to make a reservation.

You may want to make reservations now because these restaurants will be packed this weekend! Click here to check out all the restaurants and menu options this week. Feel free to give a shout out to your favorite restaurant or deal in the comments.

(And yes, we here at UU occasionally venture outside the 46th ward boundaries for dinner, and think it's forgivable for this week!)

Clean Up On Aisle 7

A reader sends in the following pic and info:
"I'm sure I'm not the only one to notice, but this stucco trough, buckets and other tools has been in the 4600 block of Broadway outside Family Dollar for months. I think it was simply left after the renovation of Family Dollar (back in September)?"

Sign Farms Flourish

There are considerably fewer signs around the polling places across the ward than there were on Election Day, but plenty still remain.  We did see Emily Stewart's grandfather out gathering her lawn signs this afternoon, which we thought was charming and neighborly.  Perhaps a community clean-up day soon might be a good idea?

Uptown Folk Fest, 1959

Here is another amazing photo from eBay seller EDM Photos showing Sunnyside and Broadway in August 1959 during the "Uptown Folk Fest". Only one building in this photo remains, on the left, the former Salvation Army building that is now vacant on the SE corner of Broadway and Sunnyside. Looking west towards Broadway we can see the old Wilson Yard shops that were destroyed in 1996. The white colored two-story building in front of it is the old Terminal Garage which stands just about where the entrance to Target is today. Buy the high-def version here.
There are a couple other photos from the fest here and here.

Tribune: Uptown's Gang Violence Causes Concern

By Jeremy Gorner, Tribune Reporter

Drawn to Chicago's Uptown community by its rich diversity, Mary Dombrowski lives with her husband and preteen daughter in a spacious condo just off Wilson Avenue, a popular thoroughfare frequented by young professionals, dog walkers and mothers pushing babies in strollers.

But just around the corner, on her block of Magnolia Avenue, the Brooklyn native isn't worried about muggings or burglaries so much as being one of the city's innocents caught in the middle of a gang gunfight. She's been on the street just minutes before or after shootings but fortunately never at precisely the wrong moment. "I've been lucky, for lack of a better word," she said.

While not one of the city's high-crime areas, this melting pot of a community — a mix largely of black, white, Hispanic and southeast Asian residents — has been struggling for years with pockets of gang violence. Continue reading at the Tribune

In Uptown, Lowered Expectations

via Chicago Breaking News
The crowded race to replace Ald. Helen Schiller in the 46th Ward drew a steady stream of voters in some precincts but failed to generate much interest in others.

In the 38th precinct in Uptown, about 100 people had voted by noon. But just after noon, seven people showed up at once, the biggest surge poll workers had seen all day.

Election judge Connie Wade said she normally likes to be the 300th voter to cast a ballot, but today she decided to settle on 200th because of the low turn-out. “I’m going to wait and see what happens at 5:30. If we’re not close, I’ll change it again,” she said.

David Stein, 53, was among the lunchtime voters who showed up in a subsidized residential building in Uptown. For him, the aldermanic race was more important than the mayoral race.

Election Day Is Here

When we first posted the countdown clock, if memory serves, it read 410 days until aldermanic elections. What an innocent time. We had no clue any of Uptown's three aldermen would step down, let alone that all of them would retire at the same time. We thought Richard M. Daley would be Mayor For Life. We barely knew who Rahm Emanuel was. We had no idea there would be 20 contenders for three aldermanic posts, and not an incumbent in sight.

Oh, how times have changed.

It's going to be a busy day, so this is the place to open post.

A little Election Day/electioneering advice: If you see anyone being harassed, if you see voter fraud, if you see something that's not right, call the Board of Elections at 312-269-7870. You can post about it, and we encourage that, but it shouldn't be in lieu of calling the Board of Elections. You can cause someone shame by posting their wrongdoing -- but you can do something about it by calling the Board of Elections.

Have fun, be safe, and GET OUT TO VOTE if you haven't already.

Be patient with election volunteers, poll watchers and election judges. They are community members who only do this one day a year or so.

First and foremost, remember that 17 candidates, in three wards, will be also-rans in this election. Only three will win, and at most, six out of the twenty candidates will go into a run-off. There are going to be a lot of disappointed candidates and supporters when the results come in this evening. We'll all still be neighbors come February 23rd. no matter who we supported for alderman. Be kind to each other, okay?

Rest in peace, Sgt. Haymaker.

Chicago's Most Wanted

For those who remember the sad family-related murder at Anadeisy food mart a couple years ago, there's an update on Fox Chicago warning that the suspect is one of "Chicago's Most Wanted."  Read the whole story here

"While investigators say Franco may have flown back to his native Mexico shortly after the shooting, they now believe he may have returned to Chicago. FBI Special agent Ross Rice says, "It's been almost a year now since the crime took place. Franco does have friends and family here in Chicago, so there's a good chance he's returned to Illinois."

Here's a description of what investigators say Franco looks like. He's described as a Hispanic male, 5'7" tall, weighing 150 pounds. He has a medium build, olive complexion, and a tattoo with two horns on one of his shoulders. On the street, Franco goes by the name "Rafa." His last known address was in the 4900 block of North Winthrop."

Nick's Picks

Continuing our regular feature of book recommendations from Uptown Borders' sales manager, Nick Taylor:

The Magicians
by Lev Grossman

Closing store sells send in swarms of bargain hunters under the spell of attraction cast by the machine, and if you happen to be one flocking to the Borders Uptown closing sell-out, here is a pick for you to grab before it flies off the shelf.

This story combines elements from the Harry Potter and Narnia series with a realist urban environment geared towards an adult audience. Divided into four high-gear parts, the text races along Quentin Coldwater's life as this child genius finds himself elected to the magical student body of Brakebills, graduating into present day Manhattan while in and out of alternate realms of imaginative delight. Worlds within worlds play as pieces for his hand-in-hand journey with an unforgettable powerhouse heroine as he and Alice vacillate from the real world through the childhood novel land of Fillory and on into the Neitherlands. Having read this years ago, the image that remains seared in my thoughts entails the haunting love scene between these daunting characters during their fox metamorphosis.

The Magicians is an adventurous vehicle filled with sensationalist scenes of magical education, animal transformations, powerful attacks of grave sacrifice and climactic battles driven through pages of poignant prose.

With Time in mind, this selection is written by Lev Grossman, author of Time magazine's most recent cover article, 2045 The Year Man Becomes Immortal. Come pick up your books before they all vanish into other hands as fast as magic.

"Gee, I Don't Have Any Idea Who's Harassing Your Campaign Worker"

From Lauren Peters, Campaign Manager for the Cappleman campaign:

"Dear UU---I wanted to give a full accounting of what transpired on Saturday.   There are 11 campaigns running for alderman right now, so everyone is out and about handing out literature.  We ran into both Emily Stewart and Don Nowotny volunteers, who’ve been very polite and courteous. Our own campaign team has informed our volunteers to leave the campaign lit of other candidates alone.

My Cappleman worker was putting out lit around 11 AM near Clark and Argyle and came upon another campaign piece wrapped up in a fence.  Wanting to know what other candidates are saying, he took it out so that he could read it. Suddenly some guy jumped out of a car holding with a video camera and got into his face and demanded to know who he worked for.  My worker said he was with the Cappleman campaign and the man with the video camera shouted, “You're stealing Molly Phelan lit, aren’t you?”

My worker said no, and that he was just reading it to see what it had to say.  In a very threatening tone, this guy (who was much larger than my worker) demanded to see what was in my worker’s bag.  My campaign worker opened up his bag of lit to show that it was filled only with Cappleman lit.   The video guy proceeded to shove his camera in the bag of lit to film it.  The video guy then asked my worker if he was a volunteer or paid person.  Then he demanded to know how much he was getting paid.  My guy said it was none of his business. At this point the guy got back in his car and drove away.

My worker called me because he was shaken up by the encounter and I slogged thru Saturday traffic to check if he was ok, along with my other workers.  We called 911 and gave a description of the incident, the car, and the video guy.  I then called the Phelan campaign to give them a heads up about the behavior of one of their volunteers.  The guy answering the phone identified himself as “Dave” and claimed he had no idea that this was happening.  I gave him the same description of the person and the car that was given to the police.  He suggested we do a joint press conference, but I let him know my only intention was to have Phelan’s campaign team stop this volunteer from harassing others.

After finishing up with the lit, we drove back to the office and passed Phelan’s office along the way.  Lo and behold, parked out front with its blinkers on was the vehicle we described to the police.  We called 911 again and police officers arrived within minutes. We decided to walk into Phelan’s office at this point and see if the guy was in fact inside.

Sure enough, the same guy who claimed he had no idea this was happening and suggested to do a joint press conference was the guy who had the video camera harassing my campaign worker.

Once the police showed up, he admitted he did it. We chose not to file a report, but I want others to know that this is going on and we won’t tolerate these tactics.  If any of you feel bullied by any campaign worker, please take the necessary action to stop it. We want a clean and safe campaign for everyone."

Seeing Double

A reader sent in these photos and points out,

Campaign Contributions: The Thread

By popular demand (and rerouting this discussion over from the "Borders Sale" thread), have at it about campaign contributions in the aldermanic elections.

Borders Sale Starts Today

A Surprising Twist

A member of the Lakeside Neighbors block club attended the city hearings this week regarding the layout of the proposed hospital going in at Clarendon and Lakeside and let us know the very pleasant results:

"Alderman Shiller attended Thursday's Chicago Plan Commission hearing and Friday's Zoning Board of Appeals hearing regarding plans for a private-pay children's psychiatric hospital in the never-occupied structure at the corner of Lakeside and Clarendon. The condo association directly across from the proposed facility and its local block club, Lakeside Neighbors, objected to several aspects of the proposed alterations including:
  • building an ambulance bay / loading dock on Lakeside, which is otherwise a residential street;
  • eliminating a number of residential parking spots along both sides of Lakeside to accommodate the ambulance and receiving dock activities;
  • paving over a side yard, which was to remain a garden under the earlier planned development agreement.
Alderman Shiller stated that she did not support the proposed curb cut on Lakeside, which would have been necessary to access the ambulance bay / loading dock.

The developers have conceded that they will now need to change to rear alley access for the facility. In addition, they have agreed to expand the width of the landscaped, green space which will separate the psychiatric hospital from the residential building abutting its property.

Many thanks to the neighbors who participated in this process, to Chicago Lakeshore Hospital for accommodating a change in plans, and most importantly to Alderman Helen Shiller for her intervention. This exercise of aldermanic influence will be long remembered."

Sales To Start Saturday At Closing Borders Bookstores

It makes us so sad to post this from Crains:

"Sales are to begin Saturday at the 200 Borders bookstores that the chain is closing, including 15 in the Chicago area. Customers can get discounts of up to 40% at the closing stores, according to a release from Michigan-based Borders Group Inc., which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this week. CDs, DVDs and other items will have substantial price reductions, the company said."  Read the rest of the article here.

Shot(s) Fired At Wilson & Sheridan

A reader writes in:
"Was in the middle of another shooting this morning. Corner of Wilson and Sheridan. Large group of black males appeared to be walking to Uplift - across Sheridan from the McDonald's pulled out guns and began shooting. Don't know if anyone was hit. Occurred at 8:15AM - right in front of crossing guards. Group ran south down Sheridan after shooting."

No "Five Guys" At Wilson Yard

A reader alterted us to Baum Realty's updated Wilson Yard flyer and a lot of you are going to be disappointed. The "proposed" Five Guys is gone and in its place is "Weight Watchers." Talk about going from one retail extreme to another.
How many Weight Watcher's points would a Five Guys burger and fries be anyway?
If you're keeping track on the other retail spaces, there is no activity in the corner space on Broadway and Montrose where the proposed PNC bank is listed. AT&T has signage and most of the buildout is complete. Chicago Nails has a work permit in the window of their space and we assume will be moving from their location next to Dunkin Donuts at Broadway and Wilson, leaving another vacant storefront there. Hair Cuttery has temporary signs up and the buildout is more or less complete. Subway has a temporary sign up and work is beginning on the interior. No activity or permits are visible in the proposed Play-N-Trade.
That leaves 5 spaces that are still being marketed. There you have it.

Sheridan Mean Streets

If you value your car's undercarriage and axles, take special precautions driving on Sheridan.  Right in front of Eastwood Towers (4640 N Sheridan, between Wilson and Leland), there's a dangerous pavement shift that's easily the length and width of a car, and about a foot deep at one corner.

The reader who alerted us about this says:  "I've called 311 and all they did was put cones in the hole. Be careful when driving down this street!"

Warming The Cockles Of Our Hearts

Take your insulin readings, folks, before you watch this video about how Peter Holsten, Suellen Long and Helen Shiller saved Uptown from "entrenched opposition" and got Wilson Yard built. It wouldn't be out of place on the Hallmark Channel.

This is in conjunction with Holsten receiving the "Outstanding For-Profit Neighborhood Real Estate Project Award" earlier this month. Peter gets the profit and gets to call the people who paid for his award-winning project names.  Isn't that special?

Undercity And The Uptown Theatre

Undercity.org, a blog dedicated to "Urban History and Guerilla Exploration," has a slide show of the inside of the Uptown Theater.  32 photos in all, and we think they're all breathtaking, like the one above.  Click on the link to view them.  We like what he has to say and we think it's especially pertinent to the Uptown:  "As an urban historian & photographer, I try to peel back the layers of a city to see what's underneath."

(We may have run this before, but it's definitely worth another look.)  If you like the photos, some are available for purchase.

Developer Turning Former Nursing Home Into Rentals

By Andrew Schroedter
Crain's

(Crain’s) — A little-known developer is betting that strong demand for North Side rental housing will continue as he converts a former nursing home near Andersonville to apartments.

A venture owned by Stuart Shiner paid just under $1.28 million in April for the 29,190-square-foot building at 1470 W. Carmen Ave., according to property records.

He is converting the five-story red brick property, a former 113-bed nursing home on the north edge of Uptown, into an 18-unit rental development.

It’s a rare apartment project for Mr. Shiner, who has converted several North Side commercial buildings to condominiums in the past decade, including a 22-unit development at 1500-10 W. Ohio St. in West Town.

He says the former nursing home, built in 1915 and once known as Carmen Manor, would make an attractive condo building. But with housing sales expected to remain sluggish through at least this year, he elected to turn the property into apartments. Continue Reading

More "Overzealous Volunteers," Apparently

Submitted by a reader:  The Argyle el stop this morning.

Update:  More "overzealous volunteers" getting creative.  A reader wrote:  "My wife just texted me that Emily Stewart's campaign volunteers got on a 148 bus just a couple minutes ago, handed out campaign flyers and got off at the next stop. She couldn't get a picture because it happened too fast. It's not legal. I just filed a complaint."

Last Day To Vote Early

One more day to cast a ballot before Election Day!  Beat the rush.  If you're in Uptown, you can go to Truman College, or nearby Welles Park (2333 N Sunnyside) or Edgewater Library (1210 W Elmdale).  If you're downtown, enjoy the warmest day of the year so far and stroll over to 69 W Washington.  The entire list of polling places is here.  Who knows what Election Day will bring, so we urge you to take advantage of the gorgeous weather and the short lines.
