Happy New Year
A reader, "Scott in Uptown," took this beautiful photo of the Chicago Skyline from Montrose Harbor. All of us at Uptown Update would like to wish everyone a wonderful and safe New Year's Eve, and a spectacular 2012.
2011 In Uptown: Looking Back
The Elections
- Three lame duck aldermen in Uptown resulted in candidates! candidates! candidates! Five in the 48th Ward; five in the 47th Ward (four of whom made it onto the ballot); and 15 in the 46th Ward (11 of whom made it onto the ballot, along with a write-in candidate). There were a bevy of debates, forums, meet & greets and get out the vote rallies. Really, you couldn’t walk out your front door without tripping over an aldermanic candidate.
- When it was all over: Harry Osterman won in a landslide (81.36% of the vote); Cinderella candidate Ameya Pawar won in a squeaker that surprised even him (50.79% of the vote); and James Cappleman won after he and Molly Phelan went into an April run-off election. We’re still exhausted – the campaigning officially began back in 2009.
- Three new aldermen representing Uptown were sworn in on May 16th… the first changes in representation since 1989. Now we get to go through ward redistricting. Whee.
The Good
- Uptowners attended forums, and wrote and pestered the CTA to do something about Uptown’s long-neglected CTA stations. In October, Sen. Durbin found $6 million for the Wilson L; much rejoicing was had. But it paled in comparison to November, when Mayor Emanuel and Ald. Cappleman announced $135 million to completely rebuild the Wilson station. We’re talking better L tracks, the dismantling of the old unused North Shore Line (which will considerably lighten up Broadway as the old concrete supports come down), and (finally) an ADA-compliant station and filled retail spaces. Work is scheduled to begin in the spring and go on until 2014. It’ll be inconvenient, but it’ll be worth the wait.
- The election of three shiny new aldermen has resulted in all sorts of weekly newsletters, town hall meetings, ward nights, public meetings, updates and responsiveness to the constituency. It’s hard to remember those dark days when a monthly or yearly newsletter was the norm, when Saturday office hours were announced but never happened, and violations of the Open Meeting Act were common. We salute the new openness and availability of all three aldermen.
President Obama visited Uptown on his 50th birthday for a party/fundraiser at the Aragon. Politics aside, seeing Marine One land at the Wilson Skate Park was something you don’t see every day, along with snowplows blocking off streets in August.
- Illinois passed a law legalizing civil unions, primarily sponsored by Uptown's State Rep., Greg Harris.
- The Uptown Theater strutted its stuff in November, when Uptown United held a fundraiser that included tours of the grand old building. It’s still got it and we were thrilled to finally see the inside of this fabled palace, which did not disappoint. It is our number one hope that funding comes through this year for its restoration.
- Words to thrill any Uptowner – the new mayor asking the question: “We have a downtown theater district. Should there be an Uptown music district, given our history with labels as well as the club scene, which is truly, truly unique around the country?”
- A row of new storefronts opened on Argyle to replace the ones that burned down in 2008 and were boarded up for years.
- The scaffolding surrounding the Sheridan Plaza came down after nearly five years, and the building ended up being one of the better looking rehabs around. Something to be proud of.
- The Buttercup Playlot received a million dollars for a rehab to make it a safe, gang-free zone for children, which is well underway. The first phase of renewing Gill Park into a safe place was also begun. We look forward to seeing the completed projects.
- The New Admiral senior housing complex at Foster and Marine was begun and construction was completed in October.
- The Black Ensemble Cultural Center took less than a year to complete and has dressed up a formerly shabby block of Clark Street. Here’s to more, as Jackie Taylor has even bigger plans for that part of Uptown.
- Lawrence Avenue was repaved, a huge improvement to the Swiss Cheese Style pavement that was there for so long. Brighter, history-based street lights went up along Wilson. And the Clark Streetscaping was completed as well.
- Both the Weiss/Uptown Farmer’s Market and the Windy City Ribfest returned for a second year.
- Residents formed a committee, held some fundraisers, and took on the challenger of reviving Challenger Bark. On a similar note, “Clarendon Bark” opened just east of Marine Drive, at Sunnyside.
- Chicago Book Expo held its first ever weekend in Uptown, highlighting our past (Charlie Chaplin, speakeasies) and utilizing our historic buildings (Uptown Broadway Building, Borders). It was awesome.
- Peoples Music School won a $45,000 grant, thanks to community votes and comments.
Changes!
- New businesses came to town: Petite Pita, Caravan, Tolotzin, Real Kitchen, Spoil Me Hair Salon, Hair Cuttery, Weight Watchers, Uptown Soda Bread, Purple Cow Ice Cream Parlor, The Dock At Montrose Beach, Rokito’s, Zesty Bites, Mink & Arce Gallery, and Xxpress Cleaners,
- We said farewell to too many retailers, some of which we liked very much: Nick’s on Wilson, Cupcake Gallery, Borders, Kahawa House/The Broadway, Fresh Harvest Market, TCF Bank at Wilson and Broadway, Joy Cleaners, International Cleaners, Taco del Mar, and Manhattan Liquors.
- We look forward to the arrival of these businesses, which have announced they're opening in 2012: Razon (4250 N Marine), Reservoir (844 N Montrose), Baker & Nosh (1303 N Wilson), and CorePower Yoga (at Wilson Yard).
- Brian Green was murdered on Wilson on January 4th right in front of an undercover police officer. Brayant Rogers, himself a shooting victim in July 2010, is currently in custody and awaiting trial for the murder.
- Brian Gill was murdered at Racine and Sunnyside on August 28th.
- Edward Clark was murdered near Winthrop and Lawrence on December 4th.
- Operation “Sugar Magnolia” and Operation “Uptown Girl” disrupted gang drug sales and put several significant players behind bars.
- We started to do an accounting of the number of shots fired, the number of people shot, and the riots and street violence that were reported, but it got too depressing. Suffice to say, it was too much and too many. As one of the Big Cheeses who attended the 2312 CAPS meeting said, “Hearing gunfire is not normal. Looking out your window and seeing people shot is not acceptable.” Remember that. We live in a lakefront community, not at the OK Corral.
- We continue to encourage you to call 911 if you see anything suspicious, if you hear gunshots or see gang activity. It is only when residents are active and communicate with the cops and elected officials that pressure will be brought to get the habitual troublemakers out of Uptown.
- It’s only been this year that we’ve realized how small and dedicated a group it is that continues to bring trouble to our community. It’s not hoards of troublemakers; it’s a small number of miscreants who decided to live on the wrong side of the law. They are far outnumbered by people who work hard at making Uptown better, which is the opposite of what the gangbangers want. They thrive in chaos.
- Five murders, three gang-related. Certainly less than some parts of the city, but not acceptable and not normal. We refuse to let the antisocial activities of a few urban terrorists define our community.
In Other News
- We haven’t heard much since August, but we were rocked when Sonic proposed opening its first Chicago store on Wilson.
- Maryville and its potential developer, Sedgwick Properties, remained a hot topic. Residents overwhelmingly voted down a proposal for the TIF-assisted “Lake View Station” project in May, and Sedgwick came back with a streamlined plan for the TIF-assisted “Lighthouse at Montrose Harbor” in November. Expect the controversy to go into a third year as Ald. Cappleman’s Zoning and Planning Committee considers the most recent proposal in 2012.
- The seemingly endless construction of the Truman Parking Garage finally ended, freeing up parking in the neighboring streets for the first time in nearly three years.
- Uptown enjoyed a spell of neighborliness and camaraderie after the Groundhog Day Blizzard. People snowmobiled and skied down our main streets, Lake Shore Drive became a dog walk, neighbors pitched in together to shovel out cars and sidewalks, and the Aragon parking lot and newly opened Truman Garage invited residents to park there while the snow was being cleared.
- We thought the weirdest crime story of the year would be the MacGyveresque acid bombs left in the alley behind McDonalds in March. Or maybe the guy who had rifles, grenades and gunpowder in his apartment on the 4200 block of Broadway. Or the idiot who thought it was fun to shoot BBs at passersby and parked cars at Leland and Malden. That was until December, when three heavily armed accused murderers from South Bend, Indiana, escaped and went to the home of a relative in Uptown. The resulting barricade situation was something right out of the movies, with ATF, SWAT, Illinois State Police, and local police stopping the Red Line for hours and putting snipers on rooftops and in nearby homes. Amazingly, it all ended with no loss of life. Not so amazingly, it was gang-related.
- Even out of office, Helen Shiller remains a polarizing figure. After she, her son and office staff were featured in a Chicago Magazine article linking politicians and gang members, her supporters and her detractors squared off about the veracity of the report. It was the fourth most-commented-on post of the year. (The first two stories were right before the run-off election between Phelan and Cappleman; and the third was reactions to the Maryville/Sedgwick meeting.)
- The Jade Buddha visited the Truc Lam Temple during its year-long tour promoting world peace, leading to a week of festivities at Ashland and Wilson.
- The never-occupied building at 4720 N Clarendon was acquired by Chicago Lakeshore Hospital, who worked with the community on its reconfiguration. It will become an extension of CLH, currently located at Gunnison and Marine.
- An Uptowner, Kevin Byrne, was selected from over 1000 applicants to live for a month at the Museum of Science and Industry.
- There were two murders that do not appear to be gang-related: Marvin Baker was bludgeoned and found in Clarendon Park in August, and in November, Maria Santiago’s body was found in her garage after an evening of partying with her upstairs neighbor, who has been charged with her murder.
- The nuns who own the Maryville property decided to stop allowing the community to park in the lot they own, putting 125 more vehicles onto crowded streets of Clarendon Park. Many, including us, saw this as retaliation for the community’s rejection of Sedgwick’s plans to buy the property. WWJD, Sisters?

Body At Clarendon and Wilson
We are hearing disturbing news from several readers that there is a police presence at Wilson and Clarendon and a body covered by a sheet on the ground. Does anyone know any further details? Please put them in the comments. We hope of course there was no foul play involved.
Update: Apparently the man jumped or fell from his apartment on one of the upper floors of the Covington apartment building and has died. Our condolences to those who knew and loved him.

Help Graeme Stewart Win $100,000 From Target
A reader writes in:
"Watching Ellen on my day off, TARGET is giving $100,000 each to 50 needy schools around the country. With so many homeless children attending Graeme Stewart Elementary, I personally could not think of a more deserving school...especially one that is literally in the shadow of a Target! I thought this might be a GREAT opportunity for UU readers to stuff a ballot box that helps our very own in such a positive way. Entries MUST be in by January 4!"

Emanuel Steps In To Referee The Fighting 47th
Interesting goings on in the 47th Ward, where former Alderman Gene Schulter was battling to remain in place as Democratic Committeeman:
So Gene Schulter, who has reigned in the 47th Ward since 1976 -- 35 years -- will become a private citizen next year. You may remember he pulled what Ald. Pawar considered to be shenanigans in September. Seems like the mayor has had enough.
"Also Friday, a brewing fight for Democratic committeeman in the 47th Ward, where Mayor Rahm Emanuel lives, was averted when representatives of the mayor intervened. Former alderman Eugene Schulter dropped his committeeman re-election bid and Paul Rosenfeld, an ally of current Ald. Ameya Pawar, also pulled out.
That leaves Peter Coffey a DePaul University employee who Emanuel supports, as the only candidate.
Thomas Bowen, who runs Emanuel's New Chicago political committee, said Emanuel supporters helped convince the two sides to stand down so the party can concentrate on the challenges ahead.
"We played a behind-the-scenes role to avoid a divisive fight here," Bowen said. "This is the compromise we came up with."
Recycle Your Tree At Margate Park
Want to put that Christmas tree to good use? You'll have to hang onto it a while, but the City of Chicago offers tree recycling beginning January 7th at locations around the city, including Margate Park (4921 N Marine).
"From Saturday, January 7, 2012 through Friday, January 20, 2012, Chicago residents be be able to drop off their used live holiday trees at one of 23 unmanned locations citywide. Trees will be mulched so that they can be reused as a fragrant mulch/ground cover on City landscaping projects or by residents in their backyard gardens. This will keep trees from being landfilled and allow an environmentally friendly reuse. A limited amount of mulch will be left at these sites for pick-up by residents beginning on Friday January 13th. We ask residents to remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel and accessories before they leave us their trees. These items can damage our machinery and will prevent reuse."

Meet Uptown Soda Bread's Baker
Chicago Serious Eats has an article about Cynthia Collins Cieckiewicz, the owner and founder of Uptown Soda Bread. You can learn why this former IT pro decided to convert her grandma's recipe into the basis for a business, and why she bakes in the middle of the night. If you haven't tried the soda bread yet, we highly recommend it (yum!) Read the entire article here.

Pride Parade Time Change in 2012

When organizers announced changes for the 2012 Pride Parade, including a new route that begins in Uptown, they announced an earlier start time. Well, scratch that.
Because the new route includes Mt. Carmel Church, and the entrance to the church would be blocked during Sunday services, the start time has been returned to noon. Synchronize your watches.
No Snow, But The Snowy Owl Remains
A reader has sent us a recent photo of the Uptown snowy owl that has delighted so many of our readers. It has moved locations. A wildlife photographer has contacted UU to ask us not to disclose where it is now because, sadly, all the publicity the owl has gotten in the Tribune and Sun-Times has brought crowds who want to get close to it and that's stressed the bird. There are people who have been chasing it, and as a result, it's off its prey and away from its water source.
The photographer warns: "People must all stay a good distance away (30 yards or so) and not try to get a close-up photo." The birding community is hoping he stays around a while, and that will only happen if he feels safe and people stop stressing him out. (This photo was taken from a distance and we zoomed in on it.)

Uptown Chicago - Birth of the Jazz Age
David Stratis has been hard at work.
"Another "NEW" Uptown history video has just been uploaded. This video highlights the "Jazz Age" history of Uptown. See postcards from the "Green Mill Gardens" road house, street photos and postcards of "Harmon's Arcadia Ballroom," and much, much more. For those who remember this history animation from the Magnolia Malden Neighbors web site, it has been edited down, photos added, and features a new soundtrack."
See what Uptown has been, and dream of what it can be again.

Building A Better Convenience Store
If you haven't been to the corner convenience store at the Sheridan Plaza (Sheridan and Wilson) in a couple months, you should take a look! It's undergone renovations, and it's expanded into the retail space next door, so now it has a coffee shop, wider aisles, a deli section, and great produce and fresh foods. It's always been our favorite bodega, but it's really stepped it up lately. Very impressive.
Uptown Groupons Available
Groupon has two deals running for some very nice local meals:
- Get a prix fixe meal for two at Marigold (4882 N Broadway) for $25, which saves you up to 55%. According to the deal, found here, there is "limited time remaining" to buy it.
- Pay $15 and gt $30 worth of seafood and sushi at Blue Ocean (4650 N Clark). The deal, found here, expires at midnight on Thursday.

Manhattan Liquors Closes
We're sorry to have to report another shuttered storefront. Manhattan Food & Liquor, at Buena and Broadway, closed earlier this month. The store is dark and there are "Store For Rent" signs in the window.

Body Pulled From The Lake
There was a lot of emergency equipment called to Montrose Harbor this morning around 10am. Sadly, they were there because a man's body was spotted in the water. Apparently it had been in the lake for some time. Here's the Tribune story.
Step On A Crack...
From Ald. Cappleman's latest newsletter:
"Shared Cost Sidewalk Program - Opens January 1, 2012. Is the sidewalk in front of your property in disrepair? The Shared Cost Sidewalk Program is a popular program in which residents share the cost of sidewalk repair with the City. The program has been a successful service for many years, offering an outstanding value to property owners. All property owners pay the same square-foot cost for new sidewalk: $3 per square foot--well below what a private contractor would charge.
The 2012 program will open to participants on January 1st, 2012. Participation will proceed on a first-come, first-served basis. Note that the program typically reaches capacity quickly, so you are encouraged to apply early in the year. Interested residents should call 311 on January 1st. Please note that if you applied for the program in previous years, you must apply again in 2012. Follow this link for more information."

From Uptown to Hollywood – Sherlock Holmes
More Uptown history from the amazing David Stratis:
If you're planning to see the new "Sherlock Holmes" movie -- starring Robert Downey, Jr. & Jude Law -- you might be interested in the amazing “Uptown Connection."
According to a New York Times movie review, Uptown Chicago's Essanay Studios' 1916 Sherlock Holmes was "the first American feature-length film based on Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes."
- Gillette Castle: If you've been to Connecticut, you may have visited “Gillette Castle State Park” in East Haddam, CT, to tour William Gillette’s castle. This very odd castle was built by Essanay’s star, William Gillette. (aka the first American movie-star Sherlock Holmes)
- Movie Stills: While the movie itself is considered lost (the earliest nitrate films didn't fare too well with time), several movie stills can be found on a simple Google search (see above).
Elves And Present Wrappers NO LONGER Needed Wednesday
Update: "Help came through! Gifts are sorted and will be distributed on Friday. Thanks to all who offered to help, have a wonderful holiday!"
From Direct Effect Charities, who were distributing Santa Letters for local students last month:
Help! We need Elf volunteers to help sort gifts at Stewart school (4525 N Kenmore) on December 21st. If we can not get the gifts sorted, the kids will not get their presents until after Christmas and that would just be sad for them.
If you are free in the afternoon or early evening and can help, please email: directeffect@ameritech.net.

CeaseFire Marches This Evening
We heard from CeaseFire today, who will be holding a candlelight vigil and march this evening.
- "On Monday, December 19th @ 6pm, we will be doing a Candlelight Vigil in three areas in Uptown. This Vigil will be in light of Edward Clark's murder and the other shootings in the area throughout the past weeks. We will be starting this Vigil @ Lawrence and Winthrop (6pm), then moving up Winthrop to Wilson and making our second stop at Clarendon Park (6:45pm) and ending at Sunnyside and Magnolia (7:15pm). There will be 2 speakers at each stop, speaking adamantly and briefly about the violence in the area. Please do not let the weather or anything else prevent you from being there!"
- CeaseFire is also having a clothing drive through Thursday, December 22nd at 3pm. If you have shoes, coats, jeans, sweaters, T-shirts, hats or scarves to donate to local families, you may drop them off at CeaseFire's office at 4654 N Racine between 9am and 10pm. Families will come to pick out clothing between 6 and 8pm on December 22nd. If you'd like to make a donation and have it picked up, please call CeaseFire's office at 773.271.8133.
Second Story Counseling Moving; New Bar/Restaurant Moving In?
We received this in email this morning, about an established Uptown business moving to another nearby location, and the possibility that the old Arnold's space will be taken over by some very surprising tenants:
"I can confirm to readers of the Uptown Blog that 2nd Story Counseling is in fact moving from our current location at 4003 N. Broadway on January 1st, 2011 to new offices just 2 blocks away at 655 W. Irving Park Road (Park Place Towers), corner of Irving and Pine Grove. We have decided to move for a number of reasons, but primarily because we no longer feel the building is a good match for our clients or our needs.
I can confirm to you that we have been told by the landlord that some type of a bar and/or restaurant is moving into the space below our offices sometime in the early part of 2012. This was the space was previously occupied by Arnold's Restaurant. The landlord informed us in early November that the owners of this space would be the same folks who operated the Green Dolphin. It is our understanding that a lease has been signed. This is all of the information that we have at this time.
We are sad to leave the Irving/Broadway building & want to thank each and every person who has been part of 2nd Story Counseling's success over these past 7 years. We are excited about our new office location and remain committed to serving individuals, couples and families in Chicago's Uptown area and north side.
John D. Moore, President & CEO
2nd Story Counseling, www.mychicagotherapist.com"
- So.... 2nd Story Counseling is staying in the neighborhood -- that's good.
- The empty Arnold's space is getting filled after sitting empty since September 2010 -- good, again.
- While we have no official confirmation, the landlord of the space is telling people that the owners of Green Dolphin Street will be moving in. Now that has us surprised. Because the owners of Green Dolphin Street are Sam and Lou Menetti, who own -- or owned -- Lawrence House. Not the most popular guys in the 46th Ward these days. So we'll see what happens, see if we get any official confirmation of what's going on. Because this could be very interesting!

Tomorrow's The Last Day
Just a reminder that Monday is the last day to drop off unwrapped toys for neighborhood kids at both Ald. Cappleman's office (4554 N Broadway, between 9am-5pm) and at Care For Real (5339 North Sheridan Road from 8am-4pm). Both programs really need items for teenagers, although any gift is appreciated.
Also, Wednesday, December 21st, is the last day to donate new or gently used winter hats and gloves for Uptown's elementary school students at Ald. Osterman's office (5533 N Broadway).
All the details are here. If you are able, please help make Christmas brighter for someone who doesn't have what you do.

Ald. Osterman: "Shop the 48th Ward this Holiday Season: Uptown!"
Ald. Osterman's latest email newsletter is a love letter to Uptown's 48th Ward businesses. Thanks, Harry! (Along with a reminder that bad publicity, particularly when violence is involved, really affects the bottom line for Uptown's businesses. Early December was one damn thing after another, and our small businesses are paying the price for the gangs' turf war by way of diminished sales. Please remember to shop and dine locally.)

Then look in your own neighborhood and discover the variety and selection of unique and one of a kind gifts offered by that local shop just down the street! Sampling the Holiday ‘Spirits’ at Local Uptown Bars and Restaurants. Santa will be right at home this holiday season when he visits the Uptown bar and restaurant scene. He can certainly expect something a bit more substantial than milk and cookies when he stops in at such hot spots like Fat Cat with its ever popular ‘12 Beers of Christmas’ promotion or Crew Bar + Grill’s annual ‘Airing of the Grievances’ and photos with the ‘Festivus’ pole. Here’s a sampling of what you can enjoy in Uptown this holiday season:
Season's Greetings Wreaths. Enjoy the original designs of over 150 Season's Greetings Wreaths hung on scores of businesses throughout Uptown. There's something for everyone in Uptown!
- Music Lovers: Steps from the Green Mill, Aragon and Riviera theaters, Shake Rattle and Read (4812 N. Broadway) is an institution in a neighborhood known for its music experiences. Insiders peruse the chock full stacks and bins for rare rock and pop culture finds, with the help of owner Ric Addy, who can share a story or two about the legends he’s seen around Uptown over the years. You may catch the drummer for tonight’s show at the Aragon stopping by for some tour bus reading, and come away with a story of your own.
- Multi-cultural offerings: Uptown’s Argyle Street district has developed into a unique multi-ethnic enclave of bustling Asian businesses. Fuel up on a “banh mi” sandwich or steamy pho soup, then start the hunt for stocking stuffers like lucky bamboo at Qideas (1134 W. Argyle) or funky clocks at New World Watch Repair & Sales (1038 W. Argyle). Also, enjoy fine Ethiopian dining at Demera or Middle Eastern culinary delights at Caravan!
- Fun Things for Pets: Local favorite Soggy Paws (1148 W Leland Avenue) is known for its self-and full-service grooming packages, but it’s also a great place to pick up a treat for your furry friend.

Roadie Coyote
We've heard from readers who've seen coyotes in Graceland Cemetery, Sheridan Park and even at Truman College. Now they're hanging out near Cricket Hill in the park (just north of Montrose as you enter Lincoln Park).
A reader writes in: "Just wanted to share a bit of information with my Uptown neighbors and fellow dog owners. Walking in Lincoln Park around 4:30 this evening on the East side of the 'hill', my dog alerted me to a coyote out for a trot. While it looked healthy and uninterested in my dog, I just wanted folks to keep their eyes open and pets in sight. He was heading South, perhaps to hang out with the Trixies?"
They most likely won't attack people, but if you have a smaller dog, it may look like a hors d'oeuvre to one of them coy-otes. Please remember to observe the leash laws.

Fun With Maps
You may have heard: Due to the 2010 census, Chicago must redraw its ward maps so that each ward has approximately the same number of residents (53,912 is the magic number). Of course, this being Chicago, politics and race factor heavily into the equation, with each group trying to draw the boundaries to their best advantage. The result... well, don't look for any square-shaped wards.
Can you say "Gerrymandering"? I knew you could!
Two groups have each submitted an opening volley, er, ward map. Since this blog focuses on Uptown (which we consider to be roughly Irving Park to the south, Foster to the north, Lake Michigan to the east and Clark to the west), we waded our way through the legal descriptions and tried to come up with representations of how Uptown would be chopped up under each proposal.*
* (We're not swearing these are 100% accurate. You try to figure out what "thence easterly along said Avenue to Nonvisible Linear Legal Statistical Boundary (TLID:111840994), thence easterly along said Nonvisible Linear Legal Statistical Boundary to Perennial Shoreline (TLID:1II766523), thence northerly along said Perennial Shoreline to Perennial Shoreline (TLID:616810245), thence westerly along said Perennial Shoreline to Perennial Shoreline (TLID:616810244), thence northerly along said Perennial Shoreline to Perennial Shoreline (TLID:630009404), thence westerly along said Perennial Shoreline to Perennial Shoreline (TLID:630009403), thence northerly along said Perennial Shoreline to Perennial Shoreline (TLID: 1 1 1 88928 I ), thence northerly along said Perennial Shoreline to Perennial Shoreline (TLID:630009422), thence northerly along said Perennial Shoreline to Nonvisible Linear Legal Statistical Boundary (TLID:111745772), thence westerly along said Nonvisible Linear Legal/Statistical Boundary" means!)
Thursday, the so-called "Latino Caucus" submitted its ward map. In it, Uptown becomes pretty much all 46th Ward. The 47th Ward keeps its four block turf (Dover to Clark between Montrose and Lawrence) and adds Graceland Cemetery. The 48th Ward is completely shut out; Ald. Osterman's new ward's southern border is Foster. Ald. Cappleman was the only Uptown alderman to endorse this plan. You can read the official document here.
Then on Friday, the so-called "Dick Mell/Black Caucus" submitted their proposed ward map. In this one, Uptown is split between the 46th, 47th, and 48th Wards. The Lawrence/Broadway entertainment district is now completely in the 46th Ward, and Little Vietnam/Argyle Street is completely in the 48th Ward. Clark Street has been restored as a border between Irving Park and Lawrence. All three Uptown aldermen (Cappleman, Osterman and Pawar) have endorsed this plan. You can read the official document here.
As Irish Pirate points out in his analysis, changes are sure to come, so don't get too attached. He also points out that, along with the tortured ward boundaries, neither map comes close to attaining that magic 53,912 residents per ward aspiration.
You might also want to take a look at the Welles Park Bulldog, which is doing a yeoman job of covering the boundaries and the politics behind the remap.
And just a reminder what the ward boundaries are today.

Good Fences Make Good Neighbors
Pink boards buttressing the inside of the fence, two-by-fours hammered to the outside of the fence. We're not sure exactly what's going on, but any attention given to the very sad, pock-marked fence of St. Boniface Cemetery, as it runs between Magnolia and Clark, has to be a good thing.

Beacon Street Gallery Board Member & Director Charged With Stealing $400K In Grant Money
Via Shia Kapos at Crain's Blogs:
The Justice Department charged a director and board member of a Chicago art gallery that helps homeless children with stealing $400,000, but the two executives of Beacon Street Gallery and Performance Center counter that they're being targeted by disgruntled employees — one of whom is married to an FBI agent.
Gallery director Patricia Murphy and board member Susan Field were charged with seven counts of mail fraud, wire fraud and theft of federal funds. Continue Reading

That's Gonna Leave A Mark
If you were wondering why Broadway was blocked from Wilson to Leland around midnight, you are probably looking at the reason.
A reader writes in:
"I was just walking home from the train when I saw this... a white pickup truck has crashed into the CTA tracks/structure at Broadway/Leland/Clifton (right in front of the Ace Hardware store). I saw the driver sitting on the curb talking to police officers. I didn't see any real structural damage to the CTA, but the truck looks really smashed."

Razón To Rejoice

A Razón in the Sun. "There is a tagline,” says Nash Cvetkovski of Razón (4250 N. Marine Dr.; no phone yet), his restaurant of American food with French, Spanish, and Italian influences that he hopes to open next month. “Razón: It’s personal.”
Huh? “It’s what we are trying to do—create an urban food factory.” Cvetkovski further clarifies that this means homemade gourmet food from local ingredients, made for a “casual-to-upscale” dining room and a coffee shop with grab-and-go sandwiches, salads, and bistro boxes for the Lake Shore Drive foot traffic. Wood-fired pizza will be available starting at 10a.m. Some sample dishes are calamari with smoked-jalapeño aïoli and grilled lemon, and the signature burger with smoked Gouda, grilled portobello mushrooms, tomato confit, sweet-potato chips, and mixed baby greens.
The café and meat market Beograd in the Irving Park neighborhood has been Cvetkovski’s family’s business for 30 years, so despite the tagline, for Cvetkovski the food industry is more than just personal.
