From Post Office To Parking Lot
Do any local historians have info or photos of the old Uptown Post Office at Lawrence & Magnolia? A reader writes in:
"Have you ever run across an image of the old and tiny police station and Uptown Post Office station that sat on the lot at the NW corner of Lawrence and Magnolia before the new post office was built in the 1930s? This old building sat on the parking lot that will be sold to the Uptown Theatre after the CTA expansion. A small gas station stood at the corner where the new post office now stands.
Here’s a shot of the site from the 1928 Sanborn map.
And what may be a ghostly image behind the Green Mill from the 1924 Uptown Theatre construction photos:

The CTA has announced the schedules for its Holiday Bus and Holiday Train, so time to make your plans if you want to ride with Santa, elves, music, and candy canes.

Here's when it comes around our area:
The Holiday Train is already riding the rails around the city, but it doesn't get here until closer to Christmas.

All Former Residents Of Wilson Men's Hotel In New Housing, Renovations To Begin
Clint Sabin is an 11 year resident of Uptown and Sheridan Park and works as a public affairs and communications consultant. He sends us the following update on the renovation of the Wilson Men's Hotel at Wilson and Clifton:
"Happy endings do happen sometimes, although they tend not to get much coverage in the news—no one writes about the planes that land safely. But this year saw happy endings for a group of Uptown men who haven’t had too much good news in their lives. These men are now in substantially better living situations: better homes, more support services and, for many, more income.
This happened because of the intensive social work and support provided by the new owner of the Wilson Mens Hotel, City Pads, who hired a team of social workers to help the residents throughout the past year.
Uptown was delighted when news spread that the building would be renovated after decades of neglect, but there was some initial concern about what would happen to the existing residents. Through City Pads efforts, almost all of the residents received a variety of bonuses and offers, were kept off the street and landed in better housing situations (only two of the 147 men refused all cooperation).
This is one story about safe landings that deserves to be shared. Developers often get a bad rap, so when a developer does the right thing and has this kind of success, they deserve to get acknowledged.
Now that the building is empty, City Pads will begin site work. The renovated building will have 76 studios in the building, and at least 20 percent of them will be set aside as affordable. The building will have amenities like a co-working lounge, movie theater room, workout room, bike storage, and a game room. There will also be 2000 square feet of retail on Wilson Avenue, although the composition of that retail is unknown at this time."

Recovering From The Midterms? City Election Season Just Opened
If you're still in recovery mode from robocalls, campaign literature, and negative ads, it's not quite over yet.
Today marks the official beginning of the city's election season, as all city offices (Mayor, Treasurer, Clerk, and all 50 Aldermen) are up for grabs on Chicago's Election Day, February 26th, 2019.
Today is the first day candidates for those offices can file their nominating petitions to get on the ballot. All signatures will be checked for validity and non-duplication by the Election Board, which sets the official ballot.
Nominating petitions can be turned in through November 26th, so candidates who did not file today can still be collecting signatures.
All candidates in line at 9AM this morning are considered to have filed simultaneously.
Below is the unofficial list of candidates for Uptown wards who filed today. We will update on the right-hand sidebar through November 26th, as more candidates file their nominating petitions:

All Aboard! Sunday Is Open House At The Model Railroad Club
One of Uptown's best-kept secrets is the Garfield-Clarendon Model Railroad Club, a miniature world hidden in the Clarendon Park Fieldhouse.
As its website says, "Most people won't get the opportunity to run a local freight, operate an important passenger train at full speed with farms whizzing by or get to perform switching at a busy rail yard. At the Garfield-Clarendon Model Railroad Club you can escape the world you know to a magical snapshot in time, hand-crafted, hand-operated and always different."
If you'd like to see this world of wonder, you're in luck. The quarterly Open House is Sunday from 1pm- 4pm. The event is free and is great for the whole family. More information can be found on our at www.garfieldcentral.org.
The fieldhouse is located at 4501 North Clarendon, at Sunnyside. There is free parking in the lot (enter east of Clarendon at Agatite).

Thinking About Home Ownership?
Join 16-year Uptown resident Bethanie Williams at Fat Cat on Thursday night (4840 North Broadway) for a mixer and learn if making the leap into home ownership is for you. It's free and no-obligation.
Uptown Resident Has 38 Cars, And Legally Parks Them All On His Block
Approximately 30-32 cars can park along each side of the street on the 4700 block of Kenmore.
So what happens when one neighbor has 38 cars and parks them all there?
That's apparently what's happening, and it's legal.
According to Block Club Chicago, Michael O. of the 4700 block of Kenmore is the city’s most successful auto lender on the car-sharing platform Turo, and his home block is where he parks his fleet. (Check them out here.)
Needless to say, it has led to parking headaches for his neighbors, who pay for zoned permit parking, only to find themselves circling the block to find spaces for their cars. Michael O. also puts lockboxes with keys to his vehicles on fences around the neighborhood, without the knowledge or consent of his neighbors.
A state bill that would regulate Turo and other car-sharing services passed both houses in Springfield last spring, only to be vetoed in a surprise move by Governor Rauner last August.
This week the legislators in the Illinois House and Senate will try to get enough votes to override the veto. SB2641 is on the calendar for a vote later today.
In an interview with NBC Chicago, Ald. Cappleman said a City Council ordinance limiting the number of cars one person can have in a permit-parking zone must wait until the state legislature takes action.
Until then, residents near the 4700 block of Kenmore will have to keep circling the block and hope this loophole gets fixed as soon as possible.

Chicago DPD Tweets "Work On The Granddaddy Of All American Movie Palaces Will Begin Next Summer"

"Commission approves $13 million in TIF assistance and a $1 land sale on Lawrence Avenue to support the $75 million restoration of the Uptown Theatre.
Work on the granddaddy of all American movie palaces will begin next summer."
Tribune: "Uptown Theatre's $75 Million Restoration Will Begin Next Summer"
Check out the glorious rendering from architects Lamar Johnson Collaborative!
We are thrilled to see plans firming up for the future of the Uptown Theatre, something we've been waiting for a long time.
The Trib's story begins: "The long-awaited, $75 million restoration of the 93-year-old Uptown Theatre — among the highest profile historic rehabs in the city’s history — will begin next summer, Chicago’s Community Development Commission is to be told Tuesday.
Along with approving the public financing elements of the restoration for partners Jam Productions and Farpoint Development, the commission — its members were appointed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel — also is expected to approve the sale (for $1) of a 31,000-square-foot, city-owned parking lot at 1030 W. Lawrence Ave. in order to “support theater operations." The rest of the story is here.
On UU's Facebook page, Ald. Cappleman commented: "In April 2015, I announced that the rehab of this one-of-a-kind theater was my #1 priority. Since last June's official announcement, the outpouring of public support has been phenomenal, but that didn't surprise me at all.
The TIF was created specifically for the restoration of this theater and I intend to use it for that very purpose. Since its closure almost 37 years ago, we've never been so close... so my focus remains on seeing my priority become a reality. I've worked too long and too hard not to see this through."
In another comment, regarding the city-owned parking lot that is next to the Uptown Lounge and will be used for a staging area for the next phase of the Red/Purple Line rebuild, Ald. Cappleman says: "[After the Lawrence Red Line rebuild], there will be a development built there that will also provide parking."
MORE Lights on Broadway
![]() |
Workers are busy installing the remaining lighting on Broadway |
Workers were installing the remaining "acorn" style lighting on Broadway this morning as part of the big streetscaping project from Leland to Gunnison. These street level lights are being installed between the much taller lighting installed earlier.
Last up is the art piece that will be installed in the new Riviera Plaza just outside Pancake House.
We have heard rumblings that it was damaged during the manufacturing process and will likely be delayed further. Now that we are entering the snowy season, expect the unveiling to be announced once the snow stops flying, likely in the spring.
Something else to look forward to, however, art is subjective.

Carol's New Style Means The Old Style Sign To Be Replaced (Updated)
As the Carol's Pub renovation continues, the outdoor "Old Style" sign came down on Wednesday.
Oh, the stories it could tell.
The owner of Carol's has said he will release information about the date of the reopening later this month. We can't wait.
Thanks to Bill Biederman for being the man on the scene with a camera.
UPDATE: From the comments on UU's Facebook page, "The new sign going on the front is actually the salvaged sign from Ollie's. It's very fitting to reclaim that to put on the new Carol's."
