Free Outdoor Screening Of Monty and Rose 2, Plus A Talk By Its Director

The Thursday screening was cancelled due to rain, and rescheduled to Tuesday, October 12th.

Monty and Rose 2: The World of Monty and Rose
will be shown free of charge in a safe outdoor setting (the parking lot of the Uptown Branch Library at 929 West Buena) next Thursday, October 7th, at 6:30pm.

The feature-length film chronicles the lives of a pair of endangered Piping Plovers over five years and is a follow-up to the 2019 documentary short. The documentary chronicles these special birds and an unpredictable series of events including a proposed music festival that propelled them to national headlines.

Monty and Rose became the first piping plovers to successfully nest within the city limits of Chicago since 1948.

The screening at Uptown Branch library will take place outdoors in the parking lot--bring a chair! Director Bob Dolgan will be on hand for a Q&A after the film.

Reserve your space here.

If you'd rather watch the documentary from the privacy of your home, you can stream it on Vimeo from $5.00. Click here to see it.

Another Angry Day On The Lake

If you're going to the beach today, be aware of the dangerous conditions.

The National Weather Service says Lake Michigan will see high wave action and dangerous currents. Waves are expected to be four to six feet high, and "swimming conditions will be life-threatening."

It further warns, "Do not venture out onto piers, jetties, breakwalls or other shoreline structures."

These photos were taken last week, under similar warning conditions.

Man Arrested for Assault On Ald. Cappleman Re-Arrested Days Later For Aggravated Battery Of Senior Citizen

As most of our readers know, there was an incident on September 18th where Ald. Cappleman, who had gone to the corner of Racine and Leland after constituents reported public drinking, was allegedly assaulted by one of the men who've been regularly hanging out there. The alleged assailant's name is Tony Landers.  Mr. Landers was subsequently arrested and released on the evening of Monday, September 20th.

Tonight, a reader sent in a screen shot showing that Mr. Landers, less than three days after his release from jail, was arrested on charges that he committed aggravated battery against a female senior citizen a couple of blocks away at 4623 North Broadway on the morning of Thursday, September 23rd.

Moreover, research shows Mr. Landers was previously arrested less than a year ago for another alleged attack: aggravated assault and use of a deadly weapon, at 4650 North Broadway, at the corner of Broadway and Leland.

Obviously this man needs help and intervention from social services, and we hope he gets the help he needs. 48 arrests unfortunately haven't done anything to help him or control his behavior.

We are posting his photo so that residents and visitors who walk through the area he frequents are aware of him and what he looks like. Please steer clear of him!

Demo Nearly Complete At Sunnyside and Hazel

It's the final days for the church building at 4447 North Hazel, which has been largely demolished as of Thursday evening.

The Assyrian Evangelical United Church of Christ moved out a year ago, leaving the building empty, and has sold the property to a developer, which will build a 32-unit, five-story residential rental building at the site. You can see the plans for the new building here.

While it's always sad to see a neighborhood landmark go, it must be remembered that the building is over a century old with severe maintenance issues, and a limited income with which to make structural repairs. The church board made the decision to sell.

We don't know exactly when the church was built, but we know it's at least 102 years old. In looking through the Tribune's archives, we see that the building was home to the Sheridan Road Methodist Episcopal Church by 1919. In 1922, it ran a notice seeking amateur musicians of "either sex, under 30" for a "high class orchestra."

But in 1936, the middle of the Great Depression, a "for sale" ad for the building ran in the Tribune. It said the "Modern North Side edifice" was selling for a bargain price of $30,000 ($590,000 in current money) and that the building had cost $100,000 to build.

The Assyrian Congregational Church then purchased and moved into the building. It was founded and led by Rev. Paul Newey and Mary Newey, both born in Iran, who helped more than 1,000 Assyrians become American citizens following World War II.

In 1959, the famous pastor and radio evangelist Preston Bradley spoke there to celebrate the church's 40th anniversary. In late 1965/early 1966, it changed its name to the Assyrian Evangelical United Church of Christ.

The church has relocated to Niles, according to Block Club Chicago, where many of its parishioners live.

Kids Get Ready - Courtenay's Playlot Fully Approved and Funded

Since its rebirth from the merger with the former Stockton School in 2013, Courtenay Language Arts has been a rock in the community, consistently improving student performance and becoming an ever more attractive option for out of community students. And now, after a new playlot for Courtenay's west side (on Dover) was announced and then passed City Council in June, the playlot's funding ($2.1 million) became official today:

We look forward to seeing the new playlot in 2022!

Happy Noises All Around

If you've been paying attention, there's suddenly lots of activity on Wilson.

First, after months of delay waiting for permits, the environmental and foundation crews have appeared at the empty lot at 4601 N. Broadway.

A flurry of activity over the last week suggests that the arrival of big equipment, including a crane, is imminent. Construction on the new 'Platform 4611' should begin shortly.

One door over, local residents report the Double Door is doing soundchecks, suggesting that construction is ongoing and some form of opening may be imminent. A neighbor says they heard "Money for Nothing" by The Dire Straits on Friday.

And finally, the new building at 1050 W. Wilson (a.k.a. 4600 N. Kenmore) is really beginning to take shape, with the side of the Double Door now nearly hidden and an elevator shaft visible in the middle of the lot.

Exciting times for Uptown.

P.S. If you didn't catch it, one of our editors reports that the Aragon's marquee was lit up for the first time in many months over the weekend.  Sorry, no picture, but another great sign!
