We Give Thanks For Graceland: Bikes, Prairies, History, Birds, And A Registered Arboretum, Too

One of the things we are most grateful for in Uptown is Graceland Cemetery and Arboretum, which gives visitors free access by car, foot, or bike. It's open every day except holidays, and showcases Chicago's history and architecture, as well as a gloriously maintained vista of flowers and trees. (Keep an eye out for groups giving tours, like this one from Atlas Obscura.)

And now it even has transformed 2.5 acres of lawn to a native prairie, the culmination of a project that began in 2014.  Its architects say, "The native plants have attracted native birds, butterflies and other pollinators and is now a main destination for bird watchers in the Chicago area."

Graceland is open until 4pm daily this time of year. You can obtain maps of the trees and notable gravesites from the office during the weeks; or you can download one from the website. The tree map is here.

It's there to enjoy, year-round. And we're grateful that it is.

The new prairie:

The autumnal colors (this year's season was sadly cut short by the late-October snow):

Hey, hey, Mr. Cub! We're so glad you spend eternity in Uptown,
close enough to Wrigley Field to hear the cheers of the faithful.

Even beautiful after it snows:

Montessori-Based Play Space Coming To Wilson Avenue

We've been watching the empty retail space next to the Public Barber (1319 West Wilson) for the past few weeks as it's been filling up with child-height furnishings, and we finally know what its going to be:
"A Chicago based, Montessori play and education center is coming soon! the abode chicago, is a home away from home for children aged 8w-3y and their parents/caregivers. Follow along as we work to spread the beauty that is Montessori, and the miracle that is young children."
Follow along on Instagram and Facebook as they prepare for opening.

Special Delivery

Thank you to the reader who sent in these photos of the helicopter delivering HVAC units to the WaterFord condo building on Saturday.

Amazingly, it took only 15-20 minutes to lift multiple heavy units from Gordon Terrace to the top of the building at 4170 Marine Drive.

Even more amazing was the man sitting in the open door of the 'copter with his legs hanging out during the entire operation.

Marine Drive was scheduled to be closed for two hours, but reopened quickly thanks to the fast work of the crew.

CTA's Holiday Bus Travels Through Uptown Over Thanksgiving Weekend

Santa and his CTA helpers are making their way around the city on various bus routes, beginning Thanksgiving weekend.

Use the Holiday Bus Tracker to know exactly where it is when it's in service!

There are a few chances to take a ride in the area around Uptown:

Friday, November 29th: The Holiday Bus will go westbound from the Howard Terminal as Route #97, leaving at 12:38pm. There will be photos at Old Orchard from approximately 1:35pm to 2:30pm. It heads back to the Howard Terminal at 2:46pm.

Then it will leave on Route #22 (Clark bus) from the Howard Terminal southbound, at 3:55pm, making its way through Uptown to downtown. (Our advice: Allow 10-15 minutes to make its way to Foster, or be assured of a seat by boarding at Howard.)

Saturday, November 30th:  It will leave the Howard Terminal as the #22 Clark bus at 12:30pm and go southbound along Clark, including through Uptown (our advice: Allow 10-15 minutes to make its way to Foster, or be assured of a seat by boarding at Howard.).

There will be a photo session at the Howard Terminal between approximately 4:10pm and 5:05pm.

Sunday, December 1st:  It becomes the #92 Foster bus, and leaves Berwyn at the Red Line station at 12:13pm.  It will travel west on Foster to the Jefferson Park Blue line.  At 1:05pm, it will become the #91 Austin bus and travel that route.

At 5:40pm, it will again turn into the #92 Foster bus, and depart the Jefferson Park Blue Line at 5:40pm, going eastbound on Foster until it reaches the Berway Red Line.

That's it for the Holiday Bus in our area this year, although it will continue around Chicago throughout December. Its complete schedule is here.

The Holiday Train will be in Uptown on the Red and Purple Lines on Tuesday, December 17th through Saturday, December 21st. We'll post a schedule closer to those dates and link it here.

Uptown Leads The Numbers In Same-Sex Marriage

Where do the most same-sex couples getting hitched in Illinois call home?

That would be right here!

The 60640 zip code leads the way in Cook County during the time span from 2013-2019, with 972 same-sex couples taking the plunge.  60660 (just north of 60640) was next, with 645 marriages; and our immediately southern neighbors in zip codes 60657 (574) and 60613 (541) filled out the leader board.

By the end of the year, Cook County expects to issue its 15,000th same-sex marriage certificate since marriage equality became legal.

Cook County Clerk Karen Yarborough has issued a nifty handout with all the statistics and charts, if you feel like geeking out (like we did).

More than 40% of Illinoisans live in Cook County, and not all counties keep records of same-sex unions.

Congrats, newlyweds!

From Ald. Cappleman's latest newsletter:

"TRAFFIC CLOSURES SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 23

"Hidden Stories at Graceland Cemetery" Tours Next Two Saturdays

If you're looking for something a little different to do the next couple weekends, consider a late-autumn walking tour of Graceland Cemetery, in an intimate group of no more than 15.

"Hidden Stories at Graceland Cemetery" are sponsored by Atlas Obscura Chicago, and take place on Saturday, November 23rd and November 30th, from 11am-12:30pm. The cost is $20 per person and they can be booked here.

The description says:

"Meet at Graceland's historic entrance for an in-depth tour of the most fascinating stories and monuments at the cemetery, presenting a unique view of Chicago (and American) history. Stories in the cemetery go far beyond the industrialists and "movers and shakers" who ended up with streets named after them. Though the tour will of course include the famous "Inez" and "Eternal Silence" statues, I’ll focus on lesser-known but equally interesting tales, some of which have never been published.

Though the route can vary from tour to tour, some of the stories here include Underground Railroad workers, a woman who funded the research behind the first birth control pill, a detective murdered by Jesse James, America's first known female spy, a man whose cause of death was listed as "brutality of policeman," a reporter who saw Einstein naked, and more. The stories will be endlessly fascinating and often hilarious."

The full description is here.

Community Meeting on Thursday On Downzoning Proposal

Ald. Martin will attend a community meeting on Thursday about the proposed downzoning of a huge part of northwest Uptown.

Fargo Comes To Uptown Square

As we posted last week, the television show FARGO was filming today on Broadway near Lawrence. The First Midwest/Bridgeview Bank building was transformed into "Winckle Savings & Loan" for the day, and some absolutely dazzling classic cars were parked along Racine and Broadway. The Aragon was the holding area for the extras.

Thank you to Robert Loerzel for giving us permission to use some of the photos from his Twitter feed about today's shoot. Take a look here for the entire thread and more photos.

We don't know what the wine-colored car parked across the street is, but we want one!

Remembering Donald Lee, StreetWise Vendor and Church Volunteer (Updated)

In Friday's Tribune, Mary Schmich writes about the life and death of StreetWise vendor Donald Lee.

While many of the locations identified as Uptown in the story are actually in Rogers Park, it is true that he frequented Uptown and attended and volunteered at Uptown Baptist Church.

Through his dedication to his job with StreetWise, he was able to gain stability in his life.  He became sober in AA, he got an apartment, he reestablished contact with his family in Georgia, and he even began taking music lessons.

Sadly, there's no happily-ever-after ending. Mr. Lee's body was found in Lake Michigan near Rogers Park in early October. The investigation and search for his cause of death continue.

His family has initiated a GoFundMe in order to return Mr. Lee's body to Georgia. If you have a couple of bucks you'd like to kick in, you can do so at www.gofundme.com/f/memorial-services-for-donald-lee.

Mary Schmich's story ends:
In the to and fro of this big, busy city, it’s easy for a man like Donald Lee to live and die without much notice. But he will be mourned by those who knew he was more than he seemed to strangers rushing by.

“He wasn’t just a person you’d pass on the street,” says his nephew Everett Lee. “He was adored by the people close enough to appreciate him. We can’t make up for lost time, but we can show that he was loved. I just want him to be remembered as a person that was loved.”
UPDATE: As of Monday, November 18th, the family's GoFundMe exceeded its $3000 goal. Thank you to all who contributed to it.

In-On Thai Now Open On Broadway

Good news for lovers of Thai Food! The much-anticipated opening of In-On Thai, at 4641 North Broadway, is ON.

Stop by for lunch and/or dinner on Saturday, the official first day of business. Early reviews are encouraging: "It completely exceeded expectations.  The quality and presentation of the food all was terrific!"

A reader-submitted photo of the restaurant
from their first official customer!
If you want to imbibe, it's BYOB.

In-On Thai, a 2016 GNR winner ("Great Neighborhood Restaurant"), was previously located on the 3800 block of Broadway, but had to close when their location was demolished to make way for the new complex currently being built there. The owners, Don and Inon, searched for a suitable new location, and we're happy they landed here in Uptown.

The restaurant is located in the rehabbed storefronts next to Gigio's. Hours are 11:30am-10pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 11:30am-9pm Sundays through Tuesdays, and Thursdays. In-On Thai is closed on Wednesdays.

It's no secret how much we loved Thai Uptown, and the 4600 block of Broadway just hasn't been the same without great Thai food. We can't wait to order.

Welcome, and much success, In-On Thai!

Investigation Discovery Seeks People With Knowledge of Yolanda Holmes Case

A heartbreaking murder that took place in Uptown seven years ago will be featured on the Investigation Discovery channel, and a producer is seeking to make contact with people with personal knowledge of what happened.

In September of 2012, local business owner and devoted mother Yolanda Holmes was murdered in her bed in her new apartment at Wilson Yard.

In December 2013, shocking arrests were made in the case: Her son, Qaw'mane Wilson, was charged with hiring his friend, Eugene Spencer, to kill Ms. Holmes. The reason? Allegedly to get access to the money in her life insurance policies, which would be used to further Qaw'mane's music career.

After a very long pre-trial period, both men were found guilty of first degree murder last March. They are still in the sentencing phase of their trials. The driver of the car that brought Eugene Spencer to Ms. Holmes's Uptown apartment building, Loriana Johnson, has been in prison for several years and is scheduled to be released in late 2020.

A detailed account of what has taken place so far is here.

A producer for Investigation Discovery channel is planning a one-hour show on this tragic case. If you have any information or are involved in the case, please contact him at swatts@anomalyent.com or call 347-601-9626.

Dispensary 33 Approved To Sell Recreational-Use Marijuana In 2020

Dispensary 33, Chicago's first medical marijuana dispensary, opened in late 2015 to great fanfare.

Now it has announced that it has been awarded an adult-use license, which approves it to dispense recreational cannabis. Beginning at 9am on January 1st, 2020, it will be able to sell to anyone with a valid 21+ ID.

Located at 5001 North Clark, Dispensary 33 says it will "serve Chicago with the highest quality cannabis products available in Illinois - including dry flower, pre-rolled joints, edibles, vape pens and numerous other options.

Over the past year, Dispensary33 has prepared for legalization of recreational cannabis with more staff, increased training, as well as an expansion of the retail counter to accommodate twice as much space."

New Residential Building Proposed For Dover & Wilson

1359-67 W. Wilson proposal (Hanna Architects)

A developer has proposed a new four-story, 40-unit residential building on the south side of Wilson, between the corner of Dover and alley east of it. It is currently a one-story retail building.

There is a downzone request, from B3-3/RT-4 to B2-3. We're not zoning experts by any means, but it appears to be the difference between a community shopping district (current zoning) and a neighborhood mixed-used district (requested zoning).
Current site with surface parking lot and curb cut on Dover (Google)

There would be no curb cuts, with onsite parking for 32 vehicles accessible from the alley. There would be four units onsite to satisfy the ARO (affordable housing) requirement. There would be no government funding, including TIF, as part of this project.

There are plans to reuse parts of the existing building's terracotta ornamentation in the new development, but that depends on the condition of the pieces.

Per Ald. Cappleman's website:

"Developer Jody Libman from Moments Notice Services is proposing to construct a new 57.6 ft., 4 story, 40 unit residential, brick and limestone apartment building with 32 interior garage parking spaces.

This proposal would require changing the property’s two zoning designations of B3-3 and RT-4 to one designation of B2-3. Alderman Cappleman will be scheduling a meeting with the Dover Street Neighbors Association and the 46th Ward Zoning and Development Committee to review this proposal."

Visit Ald. Cappleman's development page for more details.

After Dealing With The City's Red Tape, Wilson Men's Hotel Rehab Back On Track

1124 W. Wilson, purchased by City Pads
As we all know, dealing with the city can take ages. City Pads, the new owners of 1124 W. Wilson, formerly the Wilson Men's Hotel, have certainly discovered that. We have also learned that the building will be known as "Wilson Club."

Full building permits were issued on November 5 for the conversion of the building from 246 SRO (Single Room Occupancy) units into 69 micro units. One ground floor retail space will remain as well as one office unit.

The full permit reads:

"DIRECT DEVELOPER SERVICES PROJECT** INTERIOR RENOVATIONS THROUGHOUT AN EXISTING 4 STORY W/ BASEMENT MIXED USE BUILDING TO DE-CONVERT FROM 246 SRO UNITS AND 2 RETAIL TENANT SPACES TO 69 SRO UNITS, 1 RETAIL TENANT SPACE , AND 1 OFFICE TENANT SPACE, NO CH"

If you are curious what we might expect from these units, City Pads also completed the Hazelton rehab at 851 W. Montrose.

UPDATE: The following press release was shared with neighbors from City Pads:

Dear Neighbors,

Thank you for your patience and continued interest regarding the future of the former Wilson Men's Hotel.  After a few months of delays working with the city's bureaucracy, earlier this week the City of Chicago finally issued our construction permit.  We would like to thank Alderman Cappleman for personally getting involved in this matter, as the neighborhood is anxious to have this building restored and full of Uptown residents who can enjoy all that our neighborhood has to offer.

Because of the delay in acquiring this permit our construction schedule for the building will have to be re-examined, and we will not be able to meet our original goal of a Spring 2020 opening.  After we have put together a fresh plan I'll share with you that information, as well as a rendering of what the restored building will look like, and other relevant details.

In the meantime, you can expect to see some deliveries, and a scaffolding will be going up tomorrow (Friday).  The scaffolding is required by law for safety reasons and will remain for the foreseeable future.

Before Tonight's Meeting, Weiss Hospital Details Plans To Expand Hospital Services

Photo from Weiss Hospital'sFacebook page
Tonight is the meeting where legislators and the public will learn more about what the new owners propose for the hospital. (See previous posts here and here.)

This morning Pipeline Health sent a press release about plans to expand services at Weiss:

"Weiss Hospital Opens Outpatient Behavioral Health Program
Marks expansion of services at Weiss

Grand Opening Set for November

CHICAGO — Louis A. Weiss Memorial Hospital, a member of the Pipeline Health System, today announced it will open an outpatient behavioral health program. This is just the latest in a series of significant investments made in the hospital’s health care services and facilities since the change of ownership in January.

The new outpatient program will initially have the capacity to serve 14-24 clients at any one time in either one of two settings: Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). This outpatient program will build on Weiss Hospital’s inpatient acute behavioral health services. As a result, Weiss will be able to offer a full range of comprehensive behavioral health services to provide the specific care individuals need.

“We’ve worked closely with our partners in the community to develop much-needed outpatient behavioral health services. Now Weiss will be able to better meet the behavioral health needs of the Uptown community and nearby neighborhoods,” said Weiss Hospital CEO Mary Shehan. “We look forward to continuing to expand the health care services Weiss provides and this is just the latest that shows our commitment to the area.”

In January 2019, Weiss became a member of the Pipeline Health System. This has allowed significant resources to be invested in the health care services Weiss provides to the surrounding community, as well as investments in the hospital’s physical and IT infrastructure.

In fact, the investments over the last nine months and the planned investments, barring any additional obstacles placed by lawmakers, are nearly as much as the previous owner invested during its decade-long ownership. Some of those investments under the new ownership include:
  • Added three new primary care physicians and 15 new specialists.
  • Growing the Women’s Health Program.
  • Growing Gender Confirmation and Reconstructive Urology programs.
While growing its programs, the quality of care at Weiss has also been a focus, as shown by maintaining the Joint Commission Accreditation as a Primary Stroke Hospital and Orthopedic Knee/Hip Total Joint Hospital and being designated an “Employer of Choice” for the Uptown Community.

In addition to the medical care improvements, there have been important infrastructure investments too. A new $10 million Electronic Medical Record System is being implemented to replace the current system, a relic from two previous owners. Major renovations of the parking structure are also underway.
You can hear more about Pipeline and Weiss's future tonight, at Weiss Hospital (Wilson and Clarendon) between 6pm and 8pm. The meeting is sponsored by and will be attended by Rep. Sara Feigenholtz, Rep. Greg Harris, and Ald. James Cappleman."

Rep. Feigenholtz Letter About Weiss Hospital Sale

A reminder that there's a meeting tonight about Weiss Hospital's sale and future. In the letter below, Rep. Sara Feigenholtz outlines her concerns about the company purchasing the hospital (Pipeline Health, LLC) and what it plans to do. (For more, see our previous post). Click each image to enlarge it.

The meeting is MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4TH, 6pm-8pm, at Weiss Hospital (Clarendon and Wilson).
