After Dealing With The City's Red Tape, Wilson Men's Hotel Rehab Back On Track

As we all know, dealing with the city can take ages. City Pads, the new owners of 1124 W. Wilson, formerly the Wilson Men's Hotel, have certainly discovered that. We have also learned that the building will be known as "Wilson Club."

Full building permits were issued on November 5 for the conversion of the building from 246 SRO (Single Room Occupancy) units into 69 micro units. One ground floor retail space will remain as well as one office unit.

The full permit reads:

"DIRECT DEVELOPER SERVICES PROJECT** INTERIOR RENOVATIONS THROUGHOUT AN EXISTING 4 STORY W/ BASEMENT MIXED USE BUILDING TO DE-CONVERT FROM 246 SRO UNITS AND 2 RETAIL TENANT SPACES TO 69 SRO UNITS, 1 RETAIL TENANT SPACE , AND 1 OFFICE TENANT SPACE, NO CH"

If you are curious what we might expect from these units, City Pads also completed the Hazelton rehab at 851 W. Montrose.

Dear Neighbors,

Thank you for your patience and continued interest regarding the future of the former Wilson Men's Hotel.  After a few months of delays working with the city's bureaucracy, earlier this week the City of Chicago finally issued our construction permit.  We would like to thank Alderman Cappleman for personally getting involved in this matter, as the neighborhood is anxious to have this building restored and full of Uptown residents who can enjoy all that our neighborhood has to offer.

Because of the delay in acquiring this permit our construction schedule for the building will have to be re-examined, and we will not be able to meet our original goal of a Spring 2020 opening.  After we have put together a fresh plan I'll share with you that information, as well as a rendering of what the restored building will look like, and other relevant details.

In the meantime, you can expect to see some deliveries, and a scaffolding will be going up tomorrow (Friday).  The scaffolding is required by law for safety reasons and will remain for the foreseeable future.

  1. This is good news. I was afraid the project had fallen through for whatever reason. There was a flurry of development announcements in the past year and outside of the Darlington and this building, there's been little movement. Any updates on the Uptown Theater, Double Doors, or the mid-rise going up on broadway where City Sports is?

  2. We just shared an update on the Uptown Theatre from the Trib on our Facebook page. They are trying to raise the remaining $26M needed to fully fund the project. A non-profit entity has been created to make accepting donations easier. It will get done.

    Double Door announcement and 4601 Broadway announcements will be coming. Both are on track but again, things take time. Longer than we'd like sometimes.
