Construction Begins on Structurally Deficient Lake Shore Drive Underpasses

Construction work began Monday morning, the first step in rebuilding the two dangerous viaducts at Wilson and Lawrence under Lake Shore Drive. Scaffolding is up, traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction, and the sound of jackhammers can be heard. It is estimated that the work rebuilding the viaducts will take six months to complete.

Uptown Update has been running stories about the falling chunks of concrete and hazardous conditions under and around the two viaducts for nearly ten years. The Tribune picked up the story earlier this year. We hope we never again have to post stories like this or this or this.

We look forward to bridges that are safe for all who travel under them.
