Protect Our Parks

Burned park grass from last summer
A reader writes in:

"Thursday, at roughly 10:30 a.m., as I was exiting Northbound LSD at Lawrence and saw a woman standing over an open fire just east of the exit ramp. It was a pile of wood in the grass and she was just standing there, arms crossed, staring into the flames.

I called 911 about the fire and heard sirens headed that way within a minute or two. Given all the rain we've had, there probably wasn't much risk of the fire spreading, but it's still dangerous and illegal to have open fires in the park.

Please ask UU readers to be especially vigilant about this. It was a problem last summer.

Setting fires is especially frightening, but maybe she didn't like her new backpack/bedroll...."

  1. I'm glad UU didn't edit the post too much, so we are able to see how flippantly this person makes fun of the homeless. Shameful.

    Exactly.

  3. What's shameful is that she didn't set up her bonfire in front of your place, so you could have taken pity and invited her into your warm home, CTP. But the poster got across the point that it was one of itinerant guests to Uptown who decided that she'd rather damage and destroy public property than seek heat in one of the many shelters that readily provide heat here in Uptown. We know...it's something you'd like to see more of, since you don't pay for the damage caused to property we all own. And we know, if she'd said "h-o-m-e-l-e-s-s" in her post, you'd have gone all righteously indignant anyhow--you'd rather see Uptown destroyed and turned into a refugee camp than have hard-working-tax-paying Uptowners have enough money to enjoy some leftover Hamburger Helper when a homeless person (probably new to Uptown) has to resort to having a private-public bonfire for entertainment.

    But that's just you.
