Another Car Burglary -- Same Guys?

A reader wrote to us to say that her car was broken into late last week using the same M.O. as some previous car burglaries we reported about a month ago:
My car was broken into last night, fitting the description of the previous break-ins. The car was parked on Beacon Street, between Wilson and Sunnyside. The doors were left ajar and the center console and glove compartment were open, with their contents strewn about on the floor of the passenger seat and the driver's seat. So far, it seems as if nothing was taken out of the car, however, it is questionable whether or not there wasn't anything of value left in the car in the first place. A police report will be filed. Just thought I should let everyone know!
If you park in the street or even in an open lot, please take everything that could be of value out of the car, including GPS adapters and cell phone chargers. It's not right that we need to do this, but burglars have zero overhead and anything they get is pure profit.

Please make a police report if you are a victim, too, so the cops know what's going on.

  1. This to happened to me on New Year's morning. It sounds like the same M.O. What was really crazy was that there was a antique car parked in front of mine. My car doors were locked i do think they had a special tool to get in. I now try to make sure my car is closer to view of my house. This incident also happened on Beacon and Leland.

  2. My wife and I moved to Uptown ((Sunnyside between Sheridan and Hazel) from Logan Square 3 weeks ago. On Wednesday night our car was broken into at about 11:30 p.m. A neighbor across the street (an off duty police officer) witnessed the break-in and apparently chased the guy on foot for a block or two before losing him. She went ahead and filed a police report, as they were unable to locate us at the time (we haven't updated our auto registry yet so they were looking for us at our old address). We only found out what she did when she approached my wife and told her about it as she was cleaning up the broken glass the next guy. I'm not sure if this is the same guy though, as he didn't break in in the same manner. In the case of our break-in, he broke the driver's side window and then basically climbed in and stole the GPS out of the glove box. No doors pried open, or left open or anything like that.

  3. This is going to gross you out but on another note, we keep finding condoms or open wrappers out front on 4400 block of Racine. CONSTANTLY! I mean WTH is going on? Prostitution building around here or something?

  4. This happened to me as well about a month and a half ago on Montrose and Dover. Everything was strewn all over my car but they didn't take anything. It was DEFINITELY the same person, though. Passenger side door window broken, doors open, etc. Totally sucks

  5. I'd love to start a working for a living, tax paying citizen (as opposed to a trolling, thieving bottom feeder such is common to the late night streets of Uptown) patrol group if anyone's interested? Let's face it folks it's us vs. them with the Police responding (after the fact) when something happens. So if we don't take care of ourselves...who will? Who's interested???

  6. I work at UIC and had my car window smashed on Monday. What annoys me is that I left nothing in view to steal. I think all they took was $1.25 out of my ash tray. They went through my glove box, but again...there was nothing to steal from my car. And my car is 15 years old!!! These seem to be pointless break-ins.

  7. I, too, found my car with the passenger side window smashed in and my GPS taken out of my glove box. It was parked just off of Lawrence on the 4700 block of Magnolia. Was told by neighbors the suction cup residue on my windshield may have been a giveaway. I would like to know how to get a police report filed and taken seriously. I have called a few times and have been sent to a voice recording asking for my number, best time to reach me and name. Has anyone had any luck with filing one? I tried clearpath but there doesn't seem to be a car break-in option.

  8. Miss A, call 311 and they will transfer you to an officer to take your call. It was pretty quick and easy. The only pain was waiting for 311 to answer.

  9. Thanks T.C. I think I was so shocked I called 911 the first time and since they transferred me I tried 311 the second time and got sent to the same voicemail-like recording. I will try again this evening. Just hearing that that's at least the right place to call is good to know. Thank you!

  10. 2000 Jeep Wrangler stolen from Wilson between Beacon and Malden last night. Club was on, no glass was broken. Cops say that the Wrangler has been a recent increased target. They say good chance it was towed away. Just wanted to share in case this information helps others not have this happen to them.

  11. Same thing happened to me. 4600 block of Magnolia. Smashed passenger side window. Happened to a friend, too, on Marine near Wilson the next week. Looks like it's a trend...
