Broadway Closed Between Wilson & Leland

Big happenings on the 4600 block of Broadway starting sometime after 4pm.  It's closed to traffic, and apparently the Red Line is bypassing the Wilson stop.

According to a tweet from Ald. Cappleman:  "Broadway is closed at Wilson due to the police capturing a wanted fugitive from another state."

Per the cops, stay away from windows if you're in the area.  There's a barricade situation, we hear, and the SWAT team is moving in.  We would recommend staying off the streets as well.

Stay safe.  Keep an eye on UU's Facebook page for the latest.

Update: CBS is reporting that it's a possible hostage situation, and that the fugitive is barricaded in an apartment building of 20-30 units at 4639 N Broadway.  It also reports that the Red Line and Purple Line are closed between Berwyn and Addison as a precaution.

Update:  The news says the fugitive is from South Bend.

Update:  The southbound #36 bus is being rerouted.

Update: Fox Chicago calls it a possible hostage situation, non-confirmed.

Update:  Three shots were fired.  According to a tweet from the Alderman:  "The situation at Broadway and Wilson is not a hostage situation. One man is in custody."  There is a police helicopter shining its lights onto the tops of the buildings on Winthrop.

  2. I was riding my bike home from Truman when I saw about 20 police cars. They completely blocked the street. I thought there was some massive shooting or something... It was quite a scene!

  5. Media critic,

this ain't shit. Back in 94 we had a sniper firing at cops off a Clarendon Park rooftop.

I have a friend who served in Iraq.

I said "So what? I live in Uptown."

  9. There is a police helicopter with a high beam, just beamed me on Malden. When I got off at Wilson an hour and a half ago there was a commotion of sorts....crazy.

Well...don't forget about the town hall meeting ...much to discuss and it is being held away from the commotion...be safe.

He said the is a guy with a Riffle in the building.. That we should stay away from the window and locked the door . But If I want I can walk with him to grab a cab home...

  12. Report of shots fired on Clifton was a false alarm.

I just walked down there to check it out and there does not sem to be much going on. Lots of sirens and lights and police walking around.

  13. Sophie,

Watch the news. I am sure police would like to get this over ASAP. However doubt their concern is not you getting your car.

  15. Sophie, I'm sorry the FBI and ATF and CPD are interfering with your schedule. You are the only person in Uptown with a life that may be disrupted. I'm sure all the commanders will write you sweet apologies for daring to mess with your work and your kids' school day.

Please say that this is a joke and that no one is really that entitled and self-important.

Here's something to think about: I bet all those agents and officers who are out there on roofs and in helicopters have schedules and lives and kids, too. I bet they'd much rather have clocked out at 5pm and gone home to their families and homes and oh, yes, their plans for the evening. Instead, they're risking their lives in the cold to keep residents safe from a desperate wanted man.

Do you get that there are slightly more important matters at play here than what time you get to Skokie?

  16. There were about 4 IL Sheriff cars and a K-9 unit at Broadway and Cuyler around 7p, wonder if it has anything to do with whats going on at Wilson. Anyone have any info?

  18. Hey Truman whatever you are, am not saying this in a negative way. Am already home falling asleep and hoping they resolve the matter without anyone getting hurt except the bad guys... I do praise the police for putting their life out there and asking us to stay in not to get injured.. It's better you start thinking positive rather than starting up unnecessarily fight here....

  19. According to Capleman's twitter feed the fugitive is in custody.

Really upinuptown, what should we have done/do about a wanted fugitive from Indiana barricading himself in a building???? This is not just gang activity, or the kind of thing positive loitering would have prevented. This is a rare crazy event, that is definitely not the norm under any circumstances for Uptown.
