James Cappleman Elected Next Alderman Of The 46th Ward
The final tallies are in and James Cappleman has been elected 46th Ward alderman. As news stories come in, we'll add links here. Congratulations to James! (graphic via Chicago Tribune)
The future of the 46th Ward has never been brighter, and the large margin of victory shows that the residents of the ward clearly saw James Cappleman as the best person to be our next alderman. I hope that Molly and her supporters join together to create a better, safer more prosperous neighborhood for everyone. Let's put our past differences aside and come together as a community. This is a wonderful night in Chicago, and our Uptown/Lakeview area.
Congratulations Uptown! You have have earned an Alderman that cares about what's going on in Uptown. Between James & Harry, maybe the criminal element will move and we can all live in peace. This Edgewater resident is thrilled:)
What about all those negative attack ads from her that I got in the mail in the past few weeks?
Did those not work?

Apparently not your ingratiousness. FWIW the only negative attack ad I saw from Cappleman wasn't in my mailbox, but more fittingly in a gutter along Montrose - something about taking a stance against Molly's Right Wing (That's Bad!) Friends.
I went incognito to the Capplemaniac election party.
Unfortunately, the doorman insisted I wear pants so I had to go home and by the time I got back the initial celebration was past.
I did see Aldermen Waguspeck(sp) and Moore there. Also Rahm dropped in and bought me a beer and a hooker.
Or not. No Rahm was not there.
Michael Carroll was there and once again even though I didn't vote for him I have to say the man has class.
I of course put the "ass" in class.
Really folks it's a new day for Uptown. Let's at least try to work together for a change. We don't have to agree, but we should all agree that a safer neighborhood is good for almost everyone. Except the small criminal element.
I could not be more proud of James Cappleman, Richard, Lauren, Forrest, Sean, Tressa & everyone else who worked so hard, so long, and so SMART for this Victory!
Thank God we can move forward to positive endeavors for our community - POSITIVE being, I have learned, James' instinctive, default and preferred approach.
I haven't felt more politically elated since Obama's win, and before that, probably since Clinton's 1st win - but this one is so much more in the family because this is all about making our little piece of the world the place that James has shown us it can and ought to be.
yeah!!! i'm thrilled. for those of us who so narrowly missed electing cappleman last time, this is a long awaited victory. for the first time in a long time, i'm excited and optimistic for what's ahead for uptown!!!
Congratulations to UPTOWN UPDATE. It is clear from where we sit that you influenced this election, though you did not take sides. (No, they didn't. They stated their case, but not an endorsement).
...now about all those Phelan signs littering the neighborhood... I sure hope Molly and her gang goes around and collects them this morning..that would be a great start to show her team wants to work for the betterment of the ward ...
Well, it's over! Contests to cappleman and all those who worked so hard to get him elected. I think this is the proudest I have ever felt to be a resident of Uptown, and I was proud before. I look forward to working with James to help our ward shine the way it was meant to.
I second the thanks to Uptown Update! A volunteer mission that was an invaluable resource for information and exchange over the past years! Thank you for all that you do!!!
not particularly related.. but I also wanted to thank the management at 920 W. Lakeside. I worked as an election monitor there ... they went out of their way to make sure everyone was comfortable, offered us coffee throughout the day, were very friendly. And as we had two precincts jammed into one room, it could have been a very different experience...thanks again 920 W Lakeside!
Let's just try to be reasonable for the next 4 years (a tall order). We most likely won't agree with every decision he makes as alderman. But, I think we all feel that at least James will listen to and consider our opinions when making decisions.
Can we officially agree as part of the New Day we're enjoying to never again mention on UU "She Who Shall Not Be Named"?
Congrats to UU for the contributions to the dialogue of the community. A very valuable asset to our community.
And congrats to James for a hard-fought victory. Now let's move onto the hard work of not just talking about fixing our community, but actually doing it.
Congratulations. Now, encourage a redistribution of social services to scatter across the city so that no one neighborhood is overwhelmed with an abundance of less-than-well people. It is not fair to have Uptown chock full of people most of us are ill-equipped to deal with. Sure, that's insensitive of me, but the fact remains it's kinda horrible to constantly be bombarded with the needs of the several mentally ill, the addicted, etc. I got compassion fatigue after living in the Lawrence House for 18 months and only recently started not being such a jerk about such people, after being away from it for a few months.
I don't have the time but is anyone interested in doing a precinct map comparison where the voting fell in the 70% vs. 30% range? There are bound to be some hard feelings in these areas and also disagreement on issues. I realize that is a rather obvious point but sometimes mapping it out can yield some good food for thought.
I took a quick look online to find the layout of all the precincts within the 46th ward, but couldn't find anything. Granted, I didn't spend much time looking. Does anyone know where that is at?
I've got an Excel workbook with some interesting analysis (my opinion). I can send it to UU to post if anyone would like to see it. I've sorted/subtotaled by neighborhoods of the ward, by winner, and by voter turnout. The wards in which Molly won all had the lower turnouts. Only the ties had lower turnouts.
I still believe in Molly. We still have so many artists here doing nothing in the community when they could be attracting business and helping to unify us, like I see one of the Littleton brothers in a previous comment on this thread. Will the arts and be a part of this moving forward, I hope so but have some doubts.
Congratulations to James.
And a big cheers for Molly Phelan...she did inspire a lot of people it may be hard to agree for some but she did. My wish is that James will reach out to her and by extension Molly's supporters, our neighbors. I takes character to do that.
If any one has the time or inclination, it would also be interesting to see if the Tribune or Sun-Times had more winners vis-a-vis their endorsements...
Go Uptown!!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations James Cappleman :)
ReplyDeleteWhat the FGFM!

ReplyDeleteThank you UU for all your hard work covering this exhausting election!
He freaking won?!?!
ReplyDeleteAnd to Molly Phelan who ran a fierce campaign. I hope she runs for office in the future.
ReplyDeleteYES!!!
ReplyDelete(you might want to add that to your post for the sake of post-election craziness and "you're biased!" fever)

No matter the weather today, it's a GREAT day for Uptown. Congrats once again James and team.
ReplyDeleteNow, does anybody have any details on inauguration party?
Congrats to James & Uptown!

ReplyDeleteMeh.
ReplyDelete@Rob: Same goes for James' posters along LSD. Hopefully they can be recycled b/c I've seen some in the trash and it's just a waste!
ReplyDeleteHow long does it take to post a few spreadsheets? Jeeze the Chicago board of elections is slow.
ReplyDeleteNow can we all agree that we will never type, nor speak, or read the words "Helen Shiller" ever again!?!
ReplyDeletenot particularly related.. but I also wanted to thank the management at 920 W. Lakeside. ReplyDeleteI might add give JC a chance he isn't going to turn Uptown around anytime soon.
ReplyDeleteShiller had over 20+ years to run it into the ground.

ReplyDeleteWait, we actually have to do something now? Can't it just magically happen? =]
ReplyDelete...didn't i tell you that i would be praying for you to win?...VICTORY!

ReplyDeleteThanks, IP. I looked on that site earlier, but failed see the correct menu option.
ReplyDeleteLet it go Bradley, its over.
ReplyDeletePicard, what's wrong with post-election analysis? If you don't like it, don't read it buddy.

If any one has the time or inclination, it would also be interesting to see if the Tribune or Sun-Times had more winners vis-a-vis their endorsements...
ReplyDelete'Morning Rob-
ReplyDeleteEach paper picked 79% of the winners. (11 out of 14)
By the bye... I retract my comment about Molly and precinct turnout. (I was looking at the wrong sort)
