For Rent On Broadway

A reader writes in:
"On my way to Target today I noticed that Alderman Shiller's office at 4544 N. Broadway is more or less empty and looks abandoned. I saw no one inside around 11am. A sign on the door says that the last day to get residential parking permits is April 28, but I don't think there would be anyone to help you if you wanted it. They sure were quick to get a FOR RENT sign up. You can call 773-972-8241 if you want to rent this space."

  1. I hope the property owner knows a good exorcist to drive out the bad demons from that office.

By the way I walked by yesterday afternoon and there was at least one person working in the office.

The idea that the outgoing aldercritters get to close down their offices weeks before they leave office is asinine.

    The City That Works.....for some.

  2. I hate to say it, but this could be the biggest sign of the times for Uptown. Such a great moment.

  3. Wow, you can actually see the window glass for the first time in memory!

  4. Do they have to show up to collect their checks?

Is there no one there to chase people with a baseball bat?

Without an acting (active) alderman, the streets in Uptown could descend into chaos...CHAOS!!!

  5. Yes Rob, we DO dance on graves. I've been in Uptown 13 years, many have been here longer. This election is a big step for Uptown...Daley's dumping ground of choice. Let's hope our new Alderman is able to change the culture in Uptown!

  6. Is there any TIF money available to take over this space?

  7. I'll be over with a razor blade to remove the name and seal off the window!

  8. I assumed Cappleman would be moving in there. Where is he setting up shop?

  9. Wilson Ave the rumor is that he's going to use his campaign office on Broadway in between Belle Plaine and Buena. It has nice windows to actually see people working. It will be a strange sight for sure.

  10. Cleaning up boxes of Helen's rambling thoughts. Enticing and rich! What will Denise do? Pursue her beauty pagent career? Will Helen carve her home and Carmen out of Uptown? Will she drive off into the sunset? What will happen to baseball bat yielding bald man? Will we get a college campus? Stayed tuned for the next installment Of the Bad the Even worse and the ugly.

  11. Seriously...is this "legal?" Doesn't an alderperson have to maintain a ward office for the entire duration of his/her term? Or do consitutents now have to go the office at City Hall for services?

  12. Gayle -- remember, alderman voted that they cannot be investigated for breaking the law. So even if it's not legal, there's nothing anyone can do about it.

Both of Uptown's other aldermen, Smith and Schulter, have announced that they're closing their offices so as to help with the transition to the new alderman and staff.

Not so with Helen. She hasn't even acknowledged on her pathetic website that James won. Unlike both Smith and Schulter, she hasn't congratulated her successor, she hasn't talked about a transition, nor has she publicly announced her office is closing.

Typical. Another middle finger to the community from our paid representative. I wonder if she's still cashing those $8500/month paychecks?

  13. When I pass this spot, I recall my one and only visit to Alderman Shiller's office. This was also my first encounter with the graceless, raging and humanity-challenged Ms. Denise.

I was treated in such a shabby and bizarre manner on that sole visit that I wondered whether a disturbed person off their medications might have been impersonating a Shiller staffer - until I learned of the similar encounters of my neighbors. Denise converted me instantly from a Shiller voter and contributor to an advocate for Shiller's ouster.

Denise may have cost Shiller more votes over the years than any other single person or issue.

I won't be dancing on any graves, but I will shake my head when I pass this office in pity over a politician who ended her tenure in a manner that reflects so poorly on her and who so damaged and divided our community.

  14. umm, no outgoing alderman gets any funds for their office from the City after May 1. So I am not sure what you all want Shiller to do. Keep he ward office open for an additional 2 weeks with her own funds? Smith used better public relations, I guess by implying that what she was doing was something novel and in the interest of transition. But there are no outgoing alderman that are going to use their own money to keep open a ward office for an extra two weeks.

  15. Sorry, SamHam, I disagree with you on two points. One, any alderman who gives a school three and a half million dollars of taxpayer money to build a greenhouse can damn well fork out half a month's rent to do the job she is still being compensated very handsomely for. Half a month's rent is maybe, tops, a fifth of Shiller's monthly salary. Second, "there are no outgoing alderman that are going to use their own money to keep open a ward office for an extra two weeks." Gee, you better tell Gene Schulter that. He's keeping his office open until May 13th.
