Welles Park Bulldog: "Shiller Defends Legacy At Forum"

The Bulldog has an article on tonight's debate:

Like a prizefighter past their prime, a referee who doesn’t ‘get’ it or an aging child star recalled for a bit part, Monday’s 46th Ward forum at Truman College starred someone who wasn’t on the marquee: Helen Shiller.

The retiring alderman moderated a forum between James Cappleman and Molly Phelan. Moderating in this case meaning she drilled James Cappleman to support keeping a city funded health clinic open in the Uptown neighborhood.

  1. Welles Park Bulldog, the correct spelling of her name is: Helen Shiller.

  3. This is a perfect microcosm of what Helen has become.

She only engages with others to stubbornly defend her viewpoint. She only engages long after any other rational, responsible leader would engage. She engages not to listen, but to "talk at" others and impose her view point.

She has failed as a communicator.

She is the physical embodiment of "a day late and a dollar short."

I do think either candidate should be a clear upgrade over our reclusive, paranoid, angry Helen. But, I do find Cappleman's communication expertise to be a breath of fresh air IMHO.

I'll end by saying that I'm sure Helen did a lot of good things in the past, and communicated effectively at many points in her career. But, the wheels have completely fallen off, and our ward deserved much better than her performance during this term.

  4. I've been a James Cappleman fan since 2007 and have made modest contributions to his campaign. However, I am somewhat surprised at myself to say this out loud: I think Molly Phelan would be a fine alderman as well.

I just wish both of them stopped sniping at each other.

  5. Call me oblivous (maybe too much boxed wine, like our my much beloved Irish Pirate?)

But as a 20 year resident.....the BULK of the people I know who live here, are NOT happy with the current 46th Ward Alderman's legacy.
The rule of thumb seems to be STAGNANCY.
Sorry Helen, but Websters defines this as
"little or no sign of activity or advancement"
