Man Charged In Halloween Shootings

via Chicago Breaking News:
A 20-year-old man was charged this morning in connection with a Halloween shooting that left three teens wounded and trick-or-treaters scrambling for cover on the North Side in the city's Uptown neighborhood.

Akelo Washington of the 4800 block of North Winthrop Avenue, was charged with eight counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm from a vehicle, police said.

The shooting happened about 5:13 p.m on Halloween on the 1200 block of West Montrose Avenue, said Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli. Continue Reading

UU Note: We wonder what building in the 4800 block of Winthrop this man could possibly live in?

  1. I bet that he has gotten away with shits like this in the past. This time, he took it too far by shooting around kids on Halloween, which makes for good news coverage. Unfortunately, big news coverages are usually required to get our cops to be at their best.

  2. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

Mr Washington is not worth a hyperlink.

  3. How about charging him with attempted murder...

Innocent until proven guilty I suppose, but I for one would not be the least bit sorry to see folks like this permanently removed from our community.

    That is NOT welcome here.

  4. How is shooting a weapon towards people not attempted murder, or something similar? 8 counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm is all he's being charged with? If a bullet hits you, it can kill you. Maybe if the penalties for gun crime were a lot more serious, these idiots would, maybe, just maybe think twice before doing something that could land them in prison for much longer than 1 - 3 years in Illinois prisons.

  5. Wow a former Uplift student involved in violence? According to them 100% attend college. By his age, of 20, he should be a Junior by now.. I guess his classes at Northwestern were called off for the day..

  6. GREAT!

Was also thinking.....it looked like attempted murder to me.

    ReplyDelete
  7. now how do we go about getting him evicted? Readers -- remember that face. and remember to dial 911 he's on our streets looking up to no good.

  8. mg33,

Someone has to witness the suspect actually shooting at and attempting to kill the victim in order to charge with murder. The victims won't co-operate with police, thanks to the no-snitch idiocy that some people follow. So that leaves the innocent bystanders on the street who are normally ducking for cover at the time.

If someone doesn't witness the suspect actually shooting, the best you can do is unlawful discharge of a firearm.

**I'm not a lawyer and I don't play one on tv either. That's just the explanation I have heard.

  9. I agree with the thought of innocent until proven guilty and for the need for an attempted murder charge. I only wish this type of action would have a charge of domestic terrorism.

  10. According to his facebook page, he IS in college, I'm sure he was an exemplary student

  11. Just think of how witnessing this violence might affect the future perceptions of the kids who had to scamble for cover while trick-or-treating. Effects beyond the barbarism of the physical actions? Perhaps. It simply saddens me.

  12. JQL - How about the prosecutors and the judges, instead of the police?

    ReplyDelete
  13. JQL, arrests like this are made every single day with or without newsmedia coverage so go spew your anti police BS somewhere else.

    ReplyDelete
  14. its simply a case of mistaken identity police are forced to make arrests due to the high rate in crime and the election..they have no evidence except that a car that LOOKS like his was seen at the crime...another innocent man in jail because the police cant do there job...maybe the qualification of 2 years in college should be changed to four for law enforcement...believe nothing u hear n half the crap you see!!!free kelo

    ReplyDelete
  15. This guy threatened to throw a brick at me last year when he was loitering in front of my building. I filed a police report and everything....wonder if I can put that into the mix to make sure he stays in jail..

    ReplyDelete
  16. let me add...4.0 in high school was on the deans list.football team and is currently in college..is not a convicted felon by any means!!..his not perfect but indefinetly not a killer or menace to society as authority would like u to believe.

    ReplyDelete
  17. then why does he have a gun? there's a conviction right there. he at least had one last year when he shot himself in the foot!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Deans List? How did he manage that when he wasn't even smart enough last year to pull a gun out of his pants without shooting himself in the foot?

I do like the "he was on the football team" defense. If the NFL has taught us anything it's that football players are incapable of committing crimes.

Why is trouble always around this kid? Show me your friends and I will show you your future Mr. Washington.

    ReplyDelete
  19. @Ray, what? The act is the same for both charges. The intent is different. They think they can convict on the act (shooting) without witnesses, but not on whether he actually was trying to kill someone? If the bullet holes are within six feet of the ground, we can assume he intended to hit people . . . I would charge both crimes. If I lose the attempted murder, so be it.

@innocent. He is innocent unless proven guilty. That being said, saying that he "is not a convicted felon" is not proof of anything but a lack of convictions. If he really didn't do anything, tell him to make sure he doesn't plead this out.

  20. I of course hope the po po arrested the correct individual. Bad arrests do happen on occasion; however, and there is always a "however", I don't think it's likely in this case.

This young man has clearly been on the wrong path. Helen Shiller once talked about the need for more "paths".

Here is the famous letter Shiller wrote discussing the need for more "paths" for young people. Along with my teeny weeny sarcastic response.

In any case I wonder if Mr Washington was also the shooter at Sheridan and Montrose a few Sundays ago? It would be nice to think so. Similar dumbass shooting with plenty of people around.

  21. I believe the executives at Enron also were college grads and probably had 4.0 GPAs and maybe even played on the football team...and it's just as completely irrelevant to their guilt as it might be to this innocent-until-proven guilty kid.

None of us know the evidence, but I'm sure it's more than just "he's got the right kinda car."

    ReplyDelete
  22. actually i was in class w him..i had a 4.o my self...u all humor me with your sarcasm n vivid imaginations..shot himself in the foot..my point exactly..he supposingly shot 3 ppl from a distance but his dumb enough to shoot himself in the foot w his own gun..makes sense right??!!u gotta be a dead eye shooter to hit 3 moving objects.which he was not because essentially he shot himself.im not an attorney but the same incident happend to my brother.sat in jail for 3 years for attempt murder beat the case n got 120000 dollar check for his inconvenience..once again believe nothing u hear and half of everything u see!

dont mean to nitpick, but someones screen name should make sense or have decent spelling unless its on purpose.....

  31. suspect looks ok in the photo. at the public defender's office, the booking photos would usually reflect whether the suspect had been beaten up, etc.

maybe if more people told honest accounts to police and stopped taking manners into their "own" hands, which often take the lives of others, we'd know more of the truth. Until then, the people that shoot guns on our streets are the criminals. Those arresting those with guns? They're the good guys.

If you have a solution to this problem, offer some suggestions.

  32. Regardless if Kelo shot himself in the foot or a THIRTEEN YEAR OLD CHILD in the leg, why the need for this type of violence AT ALL, let alone at 5pm on Halloween in the middle of trick or treating. And congrats on your 4.0! Did anyone ever mention the Unibomber skipped 11th grade and finished high school at 15? WHO CARES ABOUT YOUR 4.0!!!!

  35. Can we dial it down a few notches?

Mr. Washington's friends/family are of course are going to defend him.

People who want to live in a community where trick-or-treating children don't have to flee from gunfire (and I certainly hope that's everyone) are of course horrified and angry that it happened and want to ensure that the person who did this is punished.

Mr. Washington has been arrested and according to the paper there was a court hearing today. Let's stop hurling insults at each other over whether or not he should have been. He HAS been. From now on, it's in the hands of the judicial process, and we'll all hear more details as things progress.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Caring Neighbor,

Yes, of course "Mr. Washington's friends/family are going to support him." But that does not mean that we, as people who take full advantage of the first amendment on this site, have to sit and listen quietly to someone spurting nearly incoherent, incorrect, anti-cop speech.

For my money, I'm glad they've apprehended someone and are proceeding judicially. I moved to Uptown two years ago fearing incidents like what happened on Halloween night, but hoping those types of incidents were largely exaggerated.

Since I have moved here, there have been countless shootings and countless other acts of violence/criminal activity around my condo. I'm sure I'm not the only one, either.

So while it may be cordial to listen without responding or respond without getting emotionally charged, you can't blame people for not doing so. We're all fed up, and to hear garbage such as what innocent till proven guilty is spreading inevitably angers people more.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The comments by guilty until proven innocent make me laugh. How many times before has a biased person come here and defended the "alleged shooter" telling us what a great guy the arrestee was. The last one was a few months ago. His mom made several posts about how the police locked up the wrong guy, how her angel of a son would never shoot anyone. Funny how they never reappear after the trial though.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think that we should all keep in mind that this guy was "charged in connection" with the shootings that took place. This does not mean that he was in fact the "shooter". However, by no means am I absolving him of his responsibility for taking part in an event that left a rather ugly scar on our neighborhood.

  40. So, if this guy is living in taxpayer subsidized housing (presuming the longtime Gangster Disciple base at United Winthrop Towers Coop, 4848 N Winthrop) does this mean that someone will bar him under the HUD rules from returning to the building? Or will the self-mananaging tax payer financed non-profit coop board continue to look the other way as mommmy illegally houses this shot-em-up cowboy?

What are the responsibilities of Preferred Property Services of Illinois LLC 773-728-4848 that is hired by the board to manage the property?

Why don't the HUD rules that exist to stop the housing of known crimminals in federal taxpayer funded properties get enforced in this neighborhood? These HUD highrises that have been turned into private coops by Shiller-buddy non-profits are one of the most costly forms of government housing. The continue to receive huge low interest HUD loans, Obama stimulus rehab funds, tax-free status, and Section-8 funding, which the tenants use to "pay" for their units. They never really establish a true ownership interest to entitle them to the ownership interest(think tax scheme) because the never pay more than enough rent to pay an artifically low monthly "assesssment fee" (rental) that is pegged to the almost non-existant interest rate HUD charges. Yet, the whole scheme operates as a tax shelter to funnel huge federal tax credits out from the non-profit to investors, who get huge tax deductions on their tax returns while letting the building go to shit. Not to worry because the fed, city, and state then use more HUD, stimulus, TIF and annual housing funds to subsidize these costly non-profits.

One of Chicago's foremost tax attorneys, John Rogers, was just sued by the feds yesterday for promoting abusive tax shelters. Perhaps the feds should look at their own HUD and stimulus program budgets and stop the fed's own abusive tax shelter program.

Please remember to support our officers. In addition to having to dodge bullets, they have to dodge crazies yelling at them.

  46. As long as people advocate a position that the police are the problem, we'll never solve the issues of crime and violence that plague Uptown. That's not to say the cops are always right or that this guy is guilty...the court system will determine that.

    I'm with Weekend.

  47. This is just me being a grammar nerd, and a lowly 3.6 gpa student in high school... it's scape goat, not an escape goat. And, please, please, when typing in any forum that is not texting, please, please, do not use text speak. Take the time to write "you" and "your". Knowledge is power and will earn respect. You will be treated seriously and not mocked if you take the time to use proper english. Inquiring minds want you to show off that 4.0 so we don't fear for our future generations, the state of education, and the english language in general.

We all hope that the police have the right man in custody, and that the legal system will do its job. Not that it doesn't have its flaws, but this suspect has committed crimes with guns in the past. That being said, this violence has got to stop. No one should live with this kind of fear, and children should never have to duck from gun fire while trick or treating, playing at the park, or simply walking down the street. The gun violence has got to stop. The fighting has got to stop.
