Chicago Neighborhoods, By The Book

Mary Schmich's column in the Tribune today mentions Explore Chicago: Eat. Play. Love. Our Neighborhoods. "The city deployed researchers to 77 Chicago communities in search of cool things to do and see, then hired Al Solomon, former Tribune travel writer, to write essays about each neighborhood.  Download for free on lulu.com.  Or buy the colorful book, a great gift for Chicago explorers."

The Uptown section is only two pages long, but has some great quotes:
  • "Uptown is a community emerging from a time warp, fifully and at times grudgingly."
  • "This is one of Uptown’s more intriguing districts, where apartment buildings and handsome greystones share streets with century-old mansions, many fully restored and some awaiting a little tender care."
  • "... Annoyance Theatre, which somehow balances drama, improv and martinis."
Thank you to the reader who brought this to our attention this morning.
