After Many Years, A Farewell

If you want lox, or a $3.99 breakfast, better make it to Irving Park and Broadway this week.

A reader informs us that Arnold's will be closing its doors on September 26.

  1. For years we have eaten there on Sunday mornings. The food was great and at a price that could not be found anywhere. For those folks that live here on the Irving Park and LSD area, Arnold`s will surely be missed.

  4. So sad... As a ex-pat southerner, I always appreciated that they served grits. Never had the Lox, though.

  7. .....also...maybe they could move up north? Their former neighbor Anna Maria's moved up to Montrose and Clark. :)

  8. I am a business operator with offices directly above what used to be Arnold's. We are a small counseling and wellness firm.

My own observation is as follows...

One of the possible major factors in the demise of Arnold's may have something to do witht he "Cash For Gold" business that is two doors down from the place. The landlord started renting to these people earlier this summer. This business, "Cash For Gold", uses what appear to be homeless people to hold giant 10 foot signs on the corner of Irving and Broadway (directly in front of Arnold's door). Sadly, their presence has wcaused utter chaos for all of the businesses operating on that corner. They are an eye sore and a business killer. The people who hold those signs often hang out with "friends" and create an unpleasant environment for all.

One cannot help but think that Arnold's decided to throw in the towel because of the ugly tactics employed by Cash for Gold. Who wants to deal with people trying to sell gold to you when you are going into a place to eat? Sends the wrong message.

  9. I have to agree with you John, we have our business http://www.chicago-eyelashes.com right up stairs, and the Cash for Gold business was a total distraction for Arnold's and other businesses in the area.

I've noticed a lot of good restaurants disappear over the past several years in the Uptown/Lakeview area, such as Zeppher, Le Saber, and not unfortunately Arnolds. The most disturbing part is the neighborhood will miss it most, once they figure out they have all gone :(
