Stash & Grab

A reader sends in this disturbing photo from the former Popeye's at Broadway and Wilson:
"...when I got there, the window was actually closed, but it's not locked, so I was able to open it to take the picture.
It looks like it's being used for God knows what by the local transients. You can see all kinds of stuff in there, including Old Glory on the floor."

UU Note: This vacant storefront needs sealed up pronto! The window to the left of this sliding window is now cracked AGAIN, after being shattered and replaced several weeks ago. This is obviously a popular hangout and now that "things" can be stashed inside, even moreso. We encourage our readers to call Jones Lang LaSalle, who manages the CTA storefronts at 888-557-5618 to report this.

  1. Should see whats happening at Maryville. Its a campground full of blankets, and booze. They don't even try to keep them out anymore.

  2. I just called and got a work order number. I encourage everyone to take a minute and call. Don't assume the next guy will do it.

  3. There's tons of graffiti all over the station building now. Front and back - and when I went by this morning, the "You Selling Secert" marker was STILL on the door to the old Popeyes. Not to mention all the writing and gang signs in the dust on the windows. The only thing I haven't seen scrawled on the building is "Clam Chouder" but I'm sure that's coming soon.

How is the CTA not aware of all of this? Don't the workers that man the station notice or report it?

  4. Ned, I hope you called 311 or went on-line to report the graffiti. I've had pretty good results with the Busters.

  5. Eye In The Sky your right. I live in the Condo right across the street and I always see them around both empty buildings drinking and the gang scum climb the fence and hide things in the thick bushes along the walls. You would think the CTA would see and respond to callers when they report such issues as by the Broadway & Wilson station. Empty boarded up buildings in and around Uptown has always been a problem and it is the owners responsibility to make them safe and secure which they hardly ever do.

  6. If the thick bushes are accessible, take some loppers or trimmers and cut them down. It works wonders for preventing the gangs hiding things. I have done it before (not on CTA property though).

  7. Somebody also wrote "you selling secert" over by the Annoyance Theater. "Call Washington FBI". I have a feeling it's one of the people in my building, somehow. Somebody else wrote "Better call Phylicia Rashad" below it. Graffitti is not funny.

  8. Is there some kind of quickie homeless training program I haven't heard about? All about utilizing your surroundings to the best effect. Is it worth college credit?

  9. "You selling secert" is also written on the mailbox on the corner of Montrose and Sheridan, next to Jake's.

What the hell does this mean, anyway?

  10. Good job ladies & gents! Kudos to UU. The walk-up window has been boarded up. Hopefully, it's only an interim solution as our fine city's leaders prepare to restore Wilson's once glorious station.
