"It's For Target! No, Aldi!"

A reader called Ald. Shiller's office to ask about the liquor moratorium being lifted at Wilson/Broadway:

"Was first told it was so Target could sell liquor.

I pointed out that Target is on Montrose, not Wilson.

Was then told that it was so Aldi could sell liquor, to "even the playing field."

Asked if there would be a community meeting - was told No. I said that I thought a community meeting or community vote was required for a new liquor license. Was told that they didn't think that was the case but that they would look into it and call me back. I will say - the person was courteous to me on the phone."

  1. even the playing field.

There are so many things wrong with that statement, it's hard to know where to begin.

But, hey .. when you allow for two competing grocery stores to sit adjacent to one another ....

  2. In recent months, Target has been willing to communicate with the public, and has felt no need to advance the Alderman's version of events. Perhaps if someone contacted their community outreach person they would say whether they requested (or even suppport) this variance.

I guess I've never noticed a liquor aisle at the Targets I've visited.

  3. "even the playing field" - Typical leftest rederick.

Definition - Bring down the achieving to the same level of the under achieving. Not bring up the under achieving to reach the level of the achieving.

  4. Clearly "the achieving" is being brought down for your benefit.

  6. Neil, I think you mean "leftist rhetoric" not "rederick".

  7. Again, a little transparency goes a long way....

Can you imagine a world where the 46th was the land of free flowing information....

  8. Yes Target sells liquor and I welcome it.

  9. So, Target will carry "upscale" products like Budweiser and Miller Lite, while Aldi will carry "mainstream" products like Natural Ice and Dmitri's Vodka? I have no problem with folks having access to cheap liquor, just as long as they drink responsibly(which can be an issue for the homeless and Cubs fans alike). I highly doubt the usual suspects who get drunk and pass out on the street are going to be getting their goods at either of these stores.

  10. But with the liquor moratorium gone, the "usual suspects" can buy it at any new liquor store that opens. Like in the McJunkin. Or the strip mall at Wilson and Broadway. Or along Wilson Avenue.

The lifting of the moratorium opens up lots of possibilities. It isn't just Aldi that's getting permission if the moratorium is gone.

  11. Is it just me, or is it just a little too cozy and convenient that its the alderman's son's law-firm that is requesting the moratorium be lifted.

Come clean and tell us how much you're being paid.

  12. Drunks are going to get drunk no matter what. I guess I don't see what the big deal is.

  13. Candice, the drunks are going to get drunk no matter what, but will they then use your yard for a urinal? I guess not so you think it is no big deal.

They come marching through my alley feet from my car and building entrance with black bags straight from Azuza and hang for a while, whiz, deal drugs...and more.

I call 911 and could write a book as I’m sure many others can. It is a big deal.

  14. Some Targets do sell liquor. Nice liquor.

  15. It's Targe', dudes... Who says Target anyway? Yeesh!

  16. No, they won't use my yard as a urinal (don't have one), but they sure as hell do use my alley. But see, they ARE going to get drunk anyway, and they ARE going to pee in SOMEONE'S alley. You're just annoyed that it's yours. Having it happen somewhere else doesn't make much of a distinction to me. Whether it's next door or in Antarctica it's the same total amount of problem. Out of sight, out of mind, I guess?

  17. Candice, not that I'm trying to counter your argument with extremes (since I hate that) but I can't resist:

Why don't we just give them drugs and booze etc since...hell...they're going to get them somewhere. God forbid we inconvenience them by trying to protect this neighborhood.

  18. As Jimo and Meg have said - Yes. Targets sell liquor. The Targets on Peterson and Elston both have liquor aisles. I can't speak for the one on Addison or Roosevelt, but the one off of 55 does not. It may depend on the neighborhood.

  19. So going back to the OP - did the alderman's office ever call back?
