Teen's Award-Winning Poem Helps Rewrite Her Life

A reader writes in:
"I wanted to send you the link of a great "success" story. This exceptional young lady will be gracing us with her presence at Truman College in Uptown in the Fall. She is a wonderful example and will hopefully serve as a role model for others in the community."

    I disagree.

    She demonstrated maturity and made the very adult decision to vacate an environment which she knew to be unhealthy for her.

    That's not walking away.

    That's stepping up.

    Good for her.

    It took me a long time to realize that the life that I've been through does not determine where I have to go

    Amen.

    If this kid retains this type of attitude, she'll go quite far.
