We're hearing that lightning hit a building at 927 Eastwood, causing a fire on the roof. We hope everyone in that area is safe and well. Chicago Fire, Chicago Police and Department of Buildings are all on the scene.
Please add any further information in the comments.
Update: There's a live electrical line down in the alley between Lawrence and Lakeside, middle of the 800 block. Be careful out there, folks!
Update: 9:28pm. "Huge tree down on Beacon, just north of Sunnyside. Took down an iron fence around a building, missed all the cars. They are cleaning it up right now."
So I had the police scanner on hoping to hear more about this and couldn't resist posting this:
ReplyDeleteScanner: "Man at the Bryn Mawr red line station said he's being hit on the neck with a laser and wants to go to the hospital. I believe he's a psych patient"
Cop: "They can probably just beam him to the hospital"
Couldn't resist sharing information about our lovely residents.
This is our building. Thankfully, everyone is safe and unharmed, though the entire building was severely damaged. My husband was on our 3rd floor deck when the high winds suddenly appeared. It was the winds and not lightening that created all of the damage - the roof collapsed on one end of the building, water damage/flooding throughout the buildling made it inhabitable, and we were told to evacuate by the fire dept.
ReplyDeleteA brick that blew off our building was carried by wind to the 6th floor of the buildling across the street, breaking a window and injuring a woman inside. We hope she is okay. We heard she refused the ambulance, so hopefully the injury isn't major.
It will be a long process, but we're thankful that, for the most part, everyone was alright. I have to give thanks to our neighbors at Jesus People USA, who were among the first to take action, bringing tarp, tools, and manpower to secure the roof - I've never felt so grateful for a group of people I didn't know, and of whom I'd held some preconceived notions.
