Dominick's Dominates

We're just amazed at how quickly the new Dominick's flagship store at Foster and Sheridan is going up. Some of the brick exterior is already in place, and it looks like the roof is on. Will they achieve the promised autumn 2010 opening? Magic 8-Ball says, "Signs point to yes."

  1. Foster and Sheridan?! I know it's been a while since I have been in that neighbor, or Chicago, but... wasn't Dominick's already at that location? Are they repositioning the store that was already?

    Confused.

  2. I find it really interesting that this Dominicks store is using REAL brick - laid one by one, by hand - vs. those precast sheets of brick-patterned crap that both Wilson Yard and the Truman parking garage used to clad their surfaces. Guess this just proves that you do get what you pay for. oh, right.

Which brings me to a question... does anyone know if the actual accounting (line item financials that would show what everything cost) for WY is available through FOIA? I would be very curious to see how Shiller and Holstein spent our $57,000,000.

Back to the topic... love the new Dominicks and can't wait for it to open! Good-bye disgusting Jewel!

  3. I hope they bring back the same staff and keep that family grocer feel this location had.

  4. I rather like Dominick`s over Jewel. But they both have you over the barrel. What Dominick`s has cheaper Jewel is higher and what Jewel has cheaper Dominick`s is higher. The thing I hate about Jewel is their buy 1 get 1 free. The price is raised on these items so you really save little, specially the meat. I now go to the large Mexican super markets and the prices, specially on fruit is about 1/2 what I pay at the others. Most meats at their markets is way cheaper too and fresher as they cut it up right in front of you. The chicken comes in whole and not frozen like Jewel or Dominick`s.

  5. two46am.com: When the No-Tell Motel next to Dominick's went out of business, Dominick's bought the land and is making a flagship store there on the two combined properties. If you search UU, you can see the drawings of what the new store will look like. The original Dominick's closed last fall.

  6. We live around the corner from this and can't wait for the opening. The previous "Dominick’s of the Damned" was dirty, run down, poorly stocked and staffed by some REALLY scary people, most of whom did not make customers a priority.

Furthermore, the parking lot was a haven for robberies and assaults, our neighbor was the victim of an attempted robbery which was only halted by some good Samaritans.

While I'm not pleased with the way that the store really crowds the corner, the front door is virtually right on the sidewalk, being able to walk there 24/7 will make our lives easier. Hopefully the roof-top parking will be better monitored than the old surface parking was.

Also, considering the 3 marginal Jewel stores located nearby,(Clark, Montrose and Berwyn) and the superior facilities and product selection Dominick’s offers at their North Broadway location, this should really bump up the competition in our neighborhood.

  7. There is also a new Dominicks of similar style and size going up at Foster & Lincoln. That, too, replaced a small "underperforming" store.

Plus they rehabbed and reopened the store near Ridge & Devon; why it ever closed is a mystery to me since there's no other "major" grocery in West Rogers Park.

They must have had a change in fortune recently; I believe the closings and lack of attention to existing stores was due to a bad cash-flow.

  8. Caring Neighbor, thanks for the info. I was wondering what was going on. When I lived in the neighborhood, I often walked passed that store, but I seldom shopped there.

  9. I stopped going to Jewel at Montrose and Broadway when I got panhandled right in front of the door in the parking lot, with the security guard ten feet away. I went in and told the manager that they had a panhandler obstructing access to the store. He looked at me like I was nuts and said he'd do something about it. When I left after shopping, the same guy was out there, in the same place, still panhandling within a few feet of the security guard.

Buh-bye, Jewel at Montrose/Broadway. Won't be back until you respect your customers enough to disallow the "gauntlet." I make it a point not to shop at places that allow customers to be hassled, and I write the corporate office to tell them why I'm spending my money somewhere else.

I have friends who work at the Jewel and they say management is too afraid to get rid of the panhandlers. I can't imagine who they're afraid of.
