Who Am I?

A little different spin on "Where Am I Located?" today.

  1. This is a mural on Winthrop, just off Argyle, showing the history of the neighborhood in terms of different kinds of people.

  5. Ding! Ding! We have a winner in Joanne.

This is Joan F. Arai, an Argyle resident and activist who fought for five years to get funding and land to provide a middle school for Uptown's children. It opened in 1975 as Hazel-Wilson Middle School. Less than one year later, Ms. Arai passed away, and the school was renamed in her honor one week after her death. It's now known as Uplift Community High School.

The mural depicts the history of Uptown, centering on Argyle Street. You can read about it here, and specifically Ms. Arai here.

Had her all three years. She was my favorite teacher Started in room 111. i believe. I remeber the kiva was the aopen auditorim , and the Library they called The LMC for Library media center And the Music room was Mr. Lofton who basically got paid to just play his $5000.00 steroe for us the whole hour.lol There was the Shop Teacher Mr. Wingfield. he was mean as could be and called kids names like stupid, and the swimming pool and gym teacher was Miss Prince. I liked the school though . Was a new school at the time. When I went there it was mixed with all races but decades later it seemed it was Only African Americans in there mostly. Have good memories of it.
