Who Turned The Lights Out?

Reader 1, 9:15pm:  "We have a power outage at Kenmore and Buena. Looks like a few buildings were hit.  ComEd said power restored by 10pm."

Reader 2, 9:15pm:  "My fiancee and I are on the 4400 block of North Malden.  A few minutes ago, we heard what appeared to be a loud explosion and noticed that all of the streetlights AND all of the buildings on the other side of the street (The west side) are all dark. Has anyone reported a transformer explosion?"

We'll keep you informed if and as we learn more.

  1. I heard the explosion on Malden. I thought it was a firework of some sort. Soon after the noise, the police came by and questioned, and I think cuffed a guy, on the Sunnyside mall at Malden.

It looks quite eerie out there.

  2. I live in the 4400 block of Malden on the east side. I heard the explosion and also caught a glimpse of a flash out my Malden-facing windows. I first thought it was a gunshot. But then I noticed the lights out on the other side of the street. A few minutes later, I saw a policeman walking down the side walk using a flashlight to search around along as he walked on Malden from Sunnyside toward Montrose.

  3. Lights are back on in the Malden 4400 block. And looking out on the street, I cannot imagine why I saw a flash. Maybe it was just a reflection of something else.

  4. No gunshots...but there was a loud firecracker let off. Power was restored very quickly I would add.

  5. I spoke with an officer who was coming down the alley in his cruiser with lights off. He said that the police received a call of shots fired near Sunnyside and Malden and told me it was better to get inside. He had his gun drawn while driving down the alley.

The Sunnyside/Malden area has had a lot of activity, including today. Several gang members, including one large guy with a cast on his right arm, were hanging around today.

The beat cops have told me to "call and keep calling 911 as much as possible" when we see gang activity.

  6. Odd. I saw two ComEd trucks driving south on Clarendon around 7PM while I was out walking. I worried it meant there might be a power outage at my building, but there wasn't. Maybe there's been more than one outage in the neighborhood this evening?

  7. I live at Clark and Lawrence, and yes, we were out for a while as well. Heard nothing and saw no flashes, but ComEd came around and power came back on around 10:30pm.

  8. People on the 4500 block of Malden need to start looking out there window and calling 911....this seems to be an increasingly used route by local "youth clubs".

  9. If it's totally anonymous and I don't have to testify...I will start calling. :)
