A reader sends in this pic from the 4500 block of Broadway:
"Thought you all would want a status update on the Broadway streetscape. I was walking down the sidewalk in front of Harris Bank and wondered why it looked different...the large trees in the parkway have been cut down which you can see on the right side of the enclosed photo. The trees in front of Shiller's office in the McJunkin Building have also all been removed. Half of the sidewalk has been removed in front of Aldi. I am guessing they want the trees to match but it is still sad to see those old trees gone. I am hopeful this streetscape will brighten up this stretch of Broadway. Time will tell."
What a shi#y looking street. I hope Helen keeps her lawn as attractive as she does the area in front of her office.
ReplyDeleteWell, it might be really nice. It's just a shame that the only way we can find out is to watch it in progress. No plans are made available to the public.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad this is happening, but couldn't they have at least went up to Leland - the ward boundary? It sure would help if Wilson to Leland got a little attention.
ReplyDeleteI saw all this going down as it happened Friday and was heartbroken by it. Those trees on the east side of Broadway in front of the school and Harris were 40-45 years old by my count of the rings on the two stumps they left. I want to know why they needed to go. I was privy to watching the streetscape work happen on Wabash over the past two years, and on the south side they kept some equally old trees without touching them during the construction. I'm for the streetscape, but this kind of broad disregard for nature is sickening.

Maybe they could cut up the trees into firewood to distribute to some of the homeless for their campsites in the park.
ReplyDeleteDon't give Helen any ideas. Remember our history. This is the woman who once officially turned our Clarendon Park field house and park into a homeless center and campground.
