Uplift Upgrade

It's just Bricolage Fever around Uptown these days.  It looks like the entire front of Uplift School is in the early stages of having one installed, like those under the Foster and Bryn Mawr viaducts at Lake Shore Drive, and on the front of Alternatives.  A reader sent in this photo, and there was a crew hard at work when we drove past on Thursday.  Judging from how quickly the Foster Avenue bricolage was completed, we anticipate that this will be finished by early summer.

  1. When will this stop...when every surface in Uptown is covered in shards of broken glass?

  2. Aww, is someone mad they can't find an excuse to bash the kids from Uplift? Get bent.

Everyone should be proud of the kids from Uplift and our other community centers for trying to do something positive and be a counterbalance to the punks that roam the streets with pickaxes. In a fair world, these kids would get as much attention as the criminal youth that are trying to ruin this neighborhood.

  3. Hey Josh, I don't think anyone is looking for a reason to bash the kids at Uplift.

I think proud's concern is the aethetics of morals, in general.

It's a matter of taste, really.

Some folks like morals, some don't.

I don't have a personal fondness for them either and might like to see some other options presented; but, hey, that's my opinion.

And, seemingly, the opinion of proud (tho, I don't so much want to speak for him/her).

Of course, you're right, I'd prefer to see kids be recognized for adding to the community than detracting from it, but just because someone doesn't dig morals doesn't mean they're trying to tear the kids down.

  4. Yo - I would have never expected this reply from you. Irish Pirate or myself, definitely...but Yo has no personal fondness for mOrals?!?! That being said, we can get along just fine!

    J/K - ;-P

Seriously, I'm ok with the murals (or alternative pieces of art) from the standpoint that the more that is done in an organized fashion by members of the community, including the kids of Uplift, the better chance there is of this generation taking a little more pride into the neighborhood. I don't think kids these days know the value of a positive community, nor the value of having pride within ones community other than trying to lay claim to "turf" from a gangbang perspective.

To be fair, based upon what the current local culture is, really, what is there for them to brag about other than it being the 'hood that they roll in everyday?

At least the murals are something which even if it's just one or two individuals that come away from the experience thinking about the neighborhood in a respectful fashion, I'd call that something of a "win".

Besides...it's better than allowing for more GD, VL, or Black P-Stones gangbang graffiti canvas space.

    Opinions may vary...

  5. I'm sorry Yo; I'm not trying to be mean; but...

You do mean "murals" don't you? Tell me it's not a Freudian slip.

  6. Giant dice painted on the south end of a northbound building just north of the Belmont Red Line stop, advertising some casino.

I gladly welcome the bricolage in Uptown, thanks.

  7. I just hope that it is something pleasant and unifying for the community and not a statement against police brutality, gentrification, class warfare, etc.

Does anyone aside from me remember when the Shilleristas did the wall art on the side of the building in Gill Park. It has so many references to violence, gangs, shooting, and racism, it had to be painted over. It was a total waste of the money that was allotted to try to improve the park atmosphere.

BTW, that reminds me. Sedgwick is the developer of that new high rise south of Gill Park (not using TIF funds) and they are paying to renovate Gill Park into a vertical park, whatever that means. It just goes to show that what's good for Lakeview is not what is good for Uptown in Shiller's mind. I'd love to see her try to pop a TIF in the middle of her part of Boystown and see how much they'd like their alderman after that.
