Run, Smelt, Run!

A UU reader reports on an Uptown tradition:
"Hundreds of people circled Montrose Harbor Saturday evening as fishermen, friends, and family members anxiously waited in anticipation of the annual rainbow smelt run. Smelt season opened for a month on April 3, but the fish rarely enter the harbor to spawn for more than a week. Smelt counts have been ridiculously low in the past several years, but that does not deter the faithful, who worship the opening of smelt season as much as an opening of the Sox or Cubs. With lakefront waters warming to the ideal spawning temperature and warm breezes making for a beautiful night to be outdoors, this could be the night for the record books … or just lots of gobies.

Alderman Shiller’s anti-fishing/fishermen comments in this week's Tribune had no apparent effect on the crowd. (She, personally, will not eat fish caught in most of this country’s waterways because they contain pollutants.) Nets were set, steel drum fires were roaring, and daddies were passing down their secret netting techniques to their kids as Chicago’s annual tradition of fishing, socializing, and family fun continued another year.

Did this guy eat a polluted fish?

  2. Irish Pirate, I am surprised that you did not mention the black, skull-and-cross bones pirate flag on the flagpole behind that man.

Shiver-me-timbers you need to lift your eye patch.

I am out of town currently, but when I get back both of you are on my list.

I put your names down......then I struck your names out.

It's some type of Irish curse.
