New Playlot At 920 Lakeside

Thanks to a reader for sending in photos of the new 2nd floor outdoor playlot that's being put together at 920 Lakeside.
Before....

... and nearly done.  (Looks like the soft ground cover is ready to be put down.)

  1. Sorry -maybe just old fashion here, but think these off ground playgrounds are not goig to work.Kids climb fences. Sure hope someone is on duty to watch them all the time.

  2. Well, the setup looks a bit creepy at Wilson Yard.....are toddler parachutes available, because it doesn't look safe.

  3. Just put some razor wire across the top of the fence. That will fix it.

  4. Meh. I'm not sure how I feel about raised play areas; but, it is an interesting use of space, and the kids may even find it highly cool.

Looking at the "before" pic ...., why not convert that upper level into a hoops court while we're at it?

The more physically active alternatives that we can provide to kids, the better.

And not to be a rancid nit picker ..., will there be lights installed? I don't see any in the pics.

    Lights are always good.

As for safety, the fencing (although linked, not wrought iron *cough*) looks like it might be high enough. Guess we'll have to depend on the parents to provide the proper supervision.

  5. Lets hope the gangs don`t move in on that park too just like they done on many others in and around our Uptown neighborhoods....

  6. That is the HUD-subsidized, project Section 8 building where teen aged Timothy Pittman illegally lived with the other drive by shooting victim, before Timothy was murdered in the gang shooting just north of Sheridan and Lawrence. Also, it was home to a cab driver who viciously robbed and knifed his rider after arriving at the rider's suburban home. Nasty stuff.

HUD gives Lakeside Square very high 93% inspection scores and the Uptown Chicago Commission gave its long time building manager, Martha Name, the 2003 Good Neighbor award for her hard work with police to improve safety in and around the building.

Be glad for what we've got. This is one of the buildings that Shiller, Voice of the People, and ONE tried to overtake. If CCDC/ VOP managed the building with Metroplex, it would probably get one of the lowest HUD inspection ratings in the city, just like the Chicago Community Development Corp / VOP building at 847 West Sunnyside, which scores a dismal 23%.
