Teacher Supply Drive Needs Your Support

News from State Senator Heather Steans:
As you may know, the week of Monday, May 3 is “National Teacher Appreciation Week.” Though their efforts should be acknowledged and applauded year-round, this upcoming week provides us all with the opportunity to pay tribute to the hard-work and dedication our local teachers. In recognition of this special week for teachers in our community and throughout the country, State Sen. Heather Steans, Ald. Mary Ann Smith and State Rep. Harry Osterman are sponsoring a Teacher Supply Drive now through Sunday May 9 (though donations will be accepted throughout the year). We are asking that our community participate in this drive and help offset the, on average, $500 each teacher spends each year of their own money on supplies needed to run a classroom.

The teacher wish list works just like a gift registry. Choose an item that you would like to donate by visiting www.senatorsteans.com/teacherwishlist and e-mail that line to jen@heathersteans.com. Within one business day, we’ll send you instructions on where to drop the item off and remove the item from the wishlist, if applicable. We will accept new and gently used items.

Check out the list at www.senatorsteans.com/teacherwishlist.

  1. Another great way to support Chicago teachers is through donorschoose.org. You get to choose the project you would like to fund.

  3. Well, see, Clown, that's the thing. If you live in a TIF district, 70% of your property taxes that should go for schools and teachers are instead going into a TIF, where they pay for fish farms and social justice and HUD buildings. Teachers are paying out of their own pockets to make up the difference and buy classroom materials. That's what this is all about.
