The Corner That Time Forgot

A reader cc'd us:

Dear Alderman Shiller:

When can the residents of Kenmore and Buena expect the nearly 9-month construction of the sewage drain holes to be finished at 4157 N. Kenmore (Kenmore/Buena intersection)?

With a public playground, children's school, church and library all nearby, I think public safety around the exposed holes and broken concrete would be of utmost importance.

We'll keep you posted on any response and/or progress. Seems like every year there's an intersection that just gets abandoned by the city for many months. Hazel and Windsor comes to mind.

  1. Is this the same place as before? I thought this was fixed for C's sake.

  2. If I didn't know better, I would think I posted this (which I didn't) as I took that exact same picture tonight with the intent of email it to the Alderman, Streets and San, and who ever else I can!

By the way, this project started in November before Thanksgiving!! NOT ACCEPTABLE! I notice that there is a no parking construction sign on the tree from Sept 29-Oct 7. Wouldn't hold my breath though.

  3. As long as you're taking down addresses, Magical City Guy, there is a drain that has been marked off with street cones all summer at Leland and Racine. There is another that got repaired but they never finished it off with asphault at Broadway and Leland.

If you can make magic happen, many would appreciate it.

I'd call the Alderman's office, but it's in her ward and she hasn't seemed too interested in getting them fixed to this point.

  4. I'm just waiting for one of the large rocks that the construction crews left here to end up inside a car.

  5. Speaking of Alderman Shiller, the last time I remember storm drains being repaired, she publically blamed dog walkers and condo owners for the collapsed drains.

I wonder who she'll blame this time.

  6. yes this mess has been there far too long and there's a smaller one across the street by the school/church as well. its not surprising in this city though. additionally, downtown in the near north side they've been tearing up streets and sidewalks and some areas have been a mess there for over a month. they can tear things up around here but can't finish the job.

  9. I have sent 6 emails to the Alderman's office in the last 3 months and not received a single response to this project.

    Someone's obviously not listening.

  10. Ok, I have good news! (I hope!) I called the Streets and San department today, found that actually road and curb repairs are done by the department of transportation, told them our story, was transferred to the in house construction department, and then to Rick Kaye in the Concrete department. He actually knew EXACTLY what I was talking about, Asked if I was referring to corner of Buena and Kenmore.. Explained why has taken so long...was waiting for the Water Management department to fix the sewer, etc. And told me he was already planning on going out there today. Is currently on schedule to be fixed this week or next. They have to take 20 more feet of curb out first in order to ensure that the water is flowing to the sewer and then will put back together.

Was very helpful, and apologetic. Also told me if it doesn't get done, or have any questions/concerns to give him a call again.

Interestingly enough regardless of what the Alderman's office tells us, in order for Dept of Transportation, etc to come in and do road repairs, they have to get the ok of the Alerdman to come in to the ward. INTERESTING.
