Paging Neighborhood Watch

A reader cautions: Just saw a Honda Fit parked near Kenmore and Buena with two back tires missing. The car is sitting on ONE milk crate. Please remind readers to call 9-1-1 if they see any suspicious activity around cars and it's not a bad idea to buy locking lug nuts. It's about $10 shipped on Amazon.

  1. I once had my my new spare tire stolen twice in 1 month when I parked on Montrose Street. I bought my own parking spot in my condo building. Others are not as lucky and other residents report all the time, batteries, tires and broken windows all the time when cars are left parked on the Montrose and Hazel area streets......

  2. I called 911 on Thursday night. Looks like they may have received a ticket, but not been towed.

Tire wrench and lugnuts are laying under the car.

  3. Kinda looks like Detroit. Oh well, there's always the CTA.

  4. This kind of thing can easily be done in a matter of minutes in broad daylight regardless of where you are in the city. Locking lugnuts can be a good idea, just be sure that the key for them is not in your glove compartment. Speaking from personal experience, the people stealing the tires are not deterred by the locking lugnuts, they will break a window and check the glove compartment. And, if it is there, steal the tires anyway.

  5. 2 nights ago, I'd assume around 12:30 in the morning, a lot of emergency vehicles were called to the corner of Hazel and Agitite. I live around the corner and caught a bit of what was going on, but at first a woman was lying on the sidewalk not moving for about 7 minutes while a few pedestrians called the cops. From what I gather, someone stopped by this woman and threw an empty bottle at her head, cracking her skull. She received an ambulance and the cops were called, the blood washed off the pavement, but I would warn people to walk in pairs at night even though the street lights are on. I am unaware if there were any witnesses, but I have a feeling more than one person saw what happened. I hope the woman is alright.

  7. This car is still sitting on Kenmore, it has been a week! Whoever owns it really needs to take care of this. Criminals are going to assume they can get away with this sort of thing if we don't clean up after ourselves. I called the cops to have them check it out, thought it might be a stolen car that was abandoned. Guess not b/c it has a ticket on it now.
