Shooting At Lawrence & Sheridan; One Dead

Update 3: Lorraine Swanson of Lake Effect News has many more details on today's shooting. Read it here.

Not much solid information, but readers are telling us there was a shooting and a fatality around 6:15 this morning near the REST Shelter/Peoples Church. A body is still at the scene, and another person was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital. Police are looking for a black Ford Explorer with the shooter in it. The victim's body is apparently in the alley between Peoples Church and S&L Pantry on Lawrence, just east of Sheridan; the crime scene is taped off and the body is going to be removed by a paddy wagon. Witnesses are being interviewed.

Update at 9AM: "I heard that the owner of the Anadeisy market was killed early in the AM, five or six am. That much is confirmed as there is red tape around the rear of the building and it appears there is still a body there. Unconfirmed reports say that he was having a card game in the back of his store early this morning and there was a fight and somebody pulled a gun and fired. So it appears they might know who was there, but they don't have anyone in custody. I heard this unconfirmed report from the cleaners at the corner who talked to the cops."

Update 2: "Now I am hearing (unconfirmed at this point) that there were two victims. Victim and offender were both shot by each other. Both died. I'm also hearing that there were narcotics involved, but again, unconfirmed."

Please leave any further information in the comments.

  1. Red tape, two police cars, and about 20-30 people still at the scene when I drove past around 11am.

  2. Only one dead. No drugs. Not gang related.

A man in his 30s was found shot to death in the Uptown neighborhood this morning, authorities said.

Town Hall District police found the man shot to death in the 4700 block of North Sheridan Road about 6:15 a.m., according to police. He had been shot in the head, said Police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.

The man, who was declared dead on the scene, was found with multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. His identification was not available this morning.

A possible motive for the shooting was not immediately available. Belmont Area detectives were investigating.

  7. Don't know if anyone else there heard, but there was a shooting may 29th around 2am right on the corner of winona and sheridan.

Odd, since right before the shooting, multiple squad cars had headed south on sheridan responding to a big emergency. And after the shooting there were no police in the area to respond.

  8. They just can't help themselves. Summer is here, so, lets start shooting people. Makes sense to me.

  9. Lorenzo Midguel's body was NOT found in the alley, but the back room of the store, where the store manager found him dead. I walked through that alley. There wasn't a drop of blood to be seen. http://rogersparkbench.blogspot.com/2009/05/murder-in-uptown-jokers-wild.html

  10. We posted about the shooting at 8:20 this morning, and stressed that we had no firm information. We went with the initial reports we were getting from readers shortly after the shooting. As usual, as more details came in, the facts got clearer.

We apologize if anyone was offended by Uptown Update's report that the body was found in the alley; that's simply what we were hearing from emails that were sent by neighbors at 6:30 and 7 this morning.

  11. Thanks for the Update this morning UU. The details were inconsequential at that time.

Bottom line is Uptown Update is a blog, and an opinion piece. Considering there is not a fair amount of coverage of Uptown from the large media groups and our Aldermen is not adept on providing information I will take what I can get and let the details sort themselves out as the day rolls on.

Bottom line is another homicide in Uptown, another life lost.

  12. Thank you for the updates on this incident. This is a great example of how important UU is for the neighborhood. Without this site, those of us who are interested in such news would be left only with the occassional blurb on the newspaper sites.

I am sure that Shiller is happy about another shooting in her ward to scare away potential opposing votes from considering a move north.

  13. 'T Mannis' really need to learn the definition of "unconfirmed".

Additionally 'T Mannis' also contradicts his own post on CNB "When I returned at 2:45 p.m., the card had been swept up and was gone. I did, however, spot several bloody footprints walking away from the back door (see photos here)." I guess technically not a 'drop' but still WTF!

  14. It looks like after a night of drinking and card playing. Someone didn't like the card being dealt. It did happen in the backroom of the store, not the ally or parking lot.

  15. With Shiller in office, none of this will ever change.

It is so utterly OFFENSIVE to everyone of her supposed constituents that she does not even pretend to respond to the myriad shootings that occur blocks from her office.

Of course, we know that she is as sociopathic and self-centered as the criminals commiting these acts. She really disgusts me.

  16. I can't hold Shiller responsible for this one; but, I can hold her responsible for her utter silence on all things gun related in OUR ward.

A good leader will step in front of these issues and work with the community to do whatever's possible.

Shiller sweeps it under the rug, hides from the light, plants a few trees, shoves unwanted develop down everyones' throats and then talks about how much she's accomplished amid the din of gunfire.

Shiller's a politician. And a bad one at that.

    She is no leader.

    Uptown needs a leader.

Not someone afraid to confront crime for fear of the political ramifications.

  17. There was also a shooting at Winthrop and Ainslie last Thursday night. The police showed up, but the bullets could not be found. If you look at the Alert Protective security sign on the Ainslie side of 4901 Winthrop, you can see the top left corner was hit by one of the bullets.
