Alderman Helen Shiller: The Original Maverick

Forget John McCain...Alderman Helen Shiller is the "Original Maverick." A new video from "DStratis."

  1. I still consider myself new here and I am not sure that I get everything in the video. I also thought that parts of it were unnecessarily long. Overall I agree with the spirit of the message and wish that Shiller was a more communicative and positive force in the community. Thus far I have not seen much out of her office. When is she up for re-election and who will be running against her?

  2. Well Andy.....where to begin.
Scroll through the many posts on this blog, and you'll come to know why Helen is pure poison in Uptown.

I think the bottom line, is she is most concerned about her political survival, as opposed to actually growing this community beyond the failed experiments of her horrendous social services gone wrong.

  3. I intend to announce my candidiocy and I do mean canidiocy as the representative of the Silly Party.

Wait, the voice in my head is saying it is a non partisan election ...NEVermind.

Great video. I'm sure Helen and her Shilleristas are just thrilled to see more videos being made. Oh yeah. It ain't gonna be easy, Helen.

Nope, we're gonna organize, raise money, and learn the lessons of the last campaign until a new aldercreature represents the 46th Ward.

  4. Sorry to tell you this Andy but the election just passed this last winter. Shiller won by something like 600 votes. I believe the next election is in 2011 and James Cappleman ran against her in this past election and should be running against her again.

  6. for what it's worth, I follow up most concerns posted here, with emails to the 46th Ward office.
I have yet to get a single response.

  7. my father always said, activist/advocates & academics made really bad politicians... their agendas are always 1 dimensional and therefore cannot understand complex political dynamics... Shiller is a housing activist/advocate and a housing ONLY politician... she has no intention to communicate with anyone else on any other topic other than housing and housing HER way (read it as "people who will vote for her" ... ask all previous office holders of chambers of commerce... community can go to hell as far as she is concerned... she is scary material...

  8. Starck: I have been reading UU since August and I have ventured back into the archives some. I have emailed Helen's office myself and I have gotten no response on a few questions that I had.

Nevertheless, I hope people don't crucify me for being critical of this video. I think it relies too much on "inside knowledge" of Uptown and parts of it are way longer than necessary. Specifically, I felt like the over 20 seconds devoted to "zip...nada...zilch, etc" was a bit much. I also didn't understand the reference to Osama bin Laden.

As I said, I appreciate the spirit of the videos, but I think it could be better.

  9. Andy-

All political views aside, the video is ridiculous.

  10. As satire goes it's a decent effort...I give it a marginal thumbs-up. I think it would benefit from some minor editing.

  11. Anyone spot the proposal to amend the Wilson Yard redevelopment agreement on today's Finance Committee Supplemental agenda?
