Perhaps Ald. Shiller Overslept?

Alderman Shiller was a scheduled speaker at last Saturday's block club convention as you can see from the official schedule. She must have had something better to do, since those in attendance say she was a complete no-show. Block clubs are obviously not high on her list of priorities.

  1. "Overscheduling" by public officials is a venerable tradition in local, state and national politics, as anyone who's been involved with campaigns, etc. is aware. The alderman was also committing herself to an appearance at an event in Clarendon Park at that day/time I believe, and maybe couldn't figure out how to be in two places at once.

  2. If that is the case, then I hope someone who was at the meeting can confirm whether the alderman was polite enough to call and cancel beforehand. She is such a busy lady.

  3. gayle - Well, did she appear at the Clarendon Park event that same day? 104K a year and poor time management skills. That's just great...

Sounds like you're making excuses...she's an adult and there's no excuse...

  4. Give us a break, gayle. Do you think we all just fell off the turnip truck?
Hell-en once lumped block clubs and CAPS together and said they were "Neighborhood snitch networks."

  6. HOw far away is Clarendon Park from Truman College? Five minutes? Evne a brief appearance at both is better than blowing one of them completely off. I'm pretty sure she has a car and a driver, right?

  8. I was at the meeting and there was no representative for Helen there.

It was truly a great event and offered a lot of resources for block clubs.

By the by, Cappleman was there and at National Night Out at Aster Playlot, though, for anyone keeping count! :)

  9. I don't see the difficulty in dispatching a staff member to these functions. However, things do come up. When they do, a good start is to communicate with the hosts of the event you cannot attend.

And then he created a small rift in space-time and attended the national night out at Sunnyside as well!

He was in two places at once! Well that or he actually cares about the community and went out of his way to attend both events and meet as many neighbors as possible.

  11. I think Gayle's comment may have been incomplete. Perhaps she meant to say that Shill could not be several places at once - attending community two awareness events, meeting with others to find more TIFs for Wilson Yard, and attending to a busy social schedule.

  12. He must have gone to both! I saw him helping to set up the Aster Playlot event and you can see him in the picture on the post here at Uptown Update.

Hmm...someone that we didn't elect to be a public official actually caring enough to go to both?

  13. I think Gayle may have been making a blanket statement of sorts. not in defense of Helen, not in opposition of Helen..

I will say this though, it's disappointing that a rep from the Alderman's office was not there. If Greg Harris can have (1) rep at almost ALL Uptown meetings, I would think the Alderman could do the same.

  14. Thanks,Carmen,I needed that:-)
This is what I was trying to get across-that politicians of every stripe have a bad habit of promising to be in five places at once without regard to the needs and expectations of the audience(s). Such behavior is not limited to the 46th Ward of Chicago.
