National Night Out A Big Success At Sunnyside Mall

Photos are starting to fill our inbox from residents who attended tonight's Beat 2311 Meeting that was held in conjunction with National Night Out on Sunnyside Mall. Those in attendance judged the crowd to be close to 100. There were delicious hotdogs, snowcones and sodas for residents to munch on and opportunities to get to know new neighbors. Local kids enjoyed a bean-bag toss and glow-in-the-dark bracelets. We are told this is the first of many such meetings as Uptown residents begin to utilize what Sunnyside Mall was originally intended for, a place to relax and chat with neighbors, not an open-air drug market. If you were there, let us know what you thought in the comments. We are also still verifying whether or not Alderman Shiller attended any of the National Night Out events in her ward. We are fairly certain she was not on Sunnyside Mall. If you saw her at other events, please let us know.
In related news from Magnolia Malden Neighbors Block Club:
Magnolia Malden Neighbors is organizing daily/nightly walks around our neighborhood. Our goal is to foster awareness, get to know our neighbors, help deter crime by making our presence known, and identify issues in the neighborhood that should be addressed.
We want this to be an ongoing program. If you'd like to participate, please email Mike McElroy at MikeOnMagnolia@gmail.com. Responses should please include: name; time available and preference; contact info.; and, any other comments/suggestions.
Join us walk with our neighbors, our families, our dogs, to be VISIBLE and show that we care about our neighborhood! Together we can make the difference!

  1. It was a beautiful thing. Now this was an example of diversity. Everyone talked to everyone. At first the regular Mall hangers were a little intimidated, but by the time to informal meeting began they were as comfortable as usual. Ewo even spoke up and complained about police harrasment. I loved it!!! And I'm hoping for many many more. Hooray for Uptown. We're moving on up!!!

  3. I'm really glad that people were able to speak out in a respectful matter. We let our voices be heard, but most importantly we listened to eachother.

Many of my 'hellos' now have names associated with them.

  4. Met some neighbors in the row houses on Magnolia, listened to views outside my own. Saw things from a different angle, opened my eyes some, laught some, bit my tongue some, talked alot, argued a far amount as well. It was real, It was good....everyone needs more of this.

  6. Was Shiller at ANY of these events? If not, I hope someone starts a newsletter sharing with ALL the community that can be posted at various highrises, businesses, etc. that start to point out SPECIFIC instances where she is not attending to the community needs.

We cannot wait for 2011 to start sharing on a regular and vocal way how she is ignoring the community.

Particularly those that may not have access to Uptown Update, such as those in our community that are older or the where English is not their primary language...

You're right, the official term is CHA scattered site housing. But you know what she meant.

Dude, Shiller is dead to the community. She's done and doesn't care. And as you can see from last night, the community is beginning to accept that and move on. We're going to make this a better place to live without her. She and Denise can hang out in her office with the door locked and play parcheesi until 2011.

  9. Oh, and I wanted to thank the organizers for having HIGH QUALITY food. Real chips, jumbo dogs. Good stuff all around. No cheapo dogs and crappy chips.

  10. Truthfully I didn't know where she meant. Never heard of any buildings over here referred to as "row houses." And this comment isn't directed toward anybody in particular. But I just wanted people to be aware that every unit over here that is not condo and not market is not supported by Cha scattered sites.

  11. In regards to the use of "row houses", I think this is a term used to describe buildings where entrances are perpendicular to the street they're on. If the "row houses" join together to form a horseshoe, it's now a courtyard building.

  12. Nice to see Cappleman there - seems as if he is more of a leader to the community than Shiller.

  13. Cappleman who, what has he done?
I have not even meet Cappleman
I seen hem he. he is not getting my vote because he is seen at "places".

  14. north magnolia: I don't think anyone deserves your vote just because you met them.

If you see him, introduce yourself. He's one of your neighbors.

  15. No, if you what my vote you have to work for it. Why do I have to introduce my self if he whats my vote.

  16. It was neat to see the mall being used for something like this.

Ironically, about 10:00 that night a seperate group chanted "f*c$ the police" for a minutes on the same corner then about 3:00 am someone was beat up pretty bad, probably a gang initiatation one of the responding officers thought.
