UPDATE: Man wounded in Uptown shooting released from hospital

By LORRAINE SWANSON, 8/30/2008 12:27:00 PM

Chicago Police detectives from Area 3 at Belmont and Western still have no motive in Friday's shooting in Uptown, that left one teen dead and another critically injured.

The homicide victim was identified as Timothy Pittman, 19. A spokeswoman from the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said that relatives had come to identify him Saturday morning. The medical examiner's office did not have an address for the victim, but several residents said that both shooting victims resided in a public housing building on the 900 block of West Lakeside Place.

A police spokesman said that the two victims were walking on the 4800 block of North Sheridan Road at 3:22 p.m. Friday, when the first 911 call was placed. The victims were approached by another man who opened fire on them.

  1. i live further east on w. lakeside, and i have to say that i always thought of that building as one of the nicer ones in the neighborhood.

    i guess i was wrong.

    this is so sad.

  2. As a former resident of the building it is a privately owned building by the same family for well over 20 years. The owners do receive some funding through HUD. It has been incorrectly labeled as a CHA building. Management and the residents take an active role in keeping the negative influences from the premises.

  3. I've heard the building manager, Martha, has done a lot to screen tenants and the building has improved greatly under her watch.

  4. Well odds are it was The Black P Stones. Or, if what they said was correct (Doubt it) that he was in fact trying to get out then it could have been his old gang. 19?

I recall someone asking even begging for a camera to be put up here. It was even brought up at the Town Hall meeting. Our Aldermen doesn't feel the need for it.

This corner is always packed with people, I do hope someone speaks up.

  5. The victims do not live at 920 Lakeside. They give that address as their home but they were not living there.

  6. The victims did live at 920 W. Lakeside. Both were banned from entering the building awhile back. Both were/are gangster disciples.

  7. When do we pay a visit to the lair on Carmen? Let's see how quickly the alderbeast calls for police protection. Maybe she will put a police camera in front. Street crime, you know. Can't be to careful.

  8. Well there are three ways of removing these cretins from our streets. Jail, relocation to another neighborhood, and what happened here death. So this is just one down and many more to go. Luckily no innocent bystanders got hit on their way home from work, also had this been one week later there for sure would have been plenty of schoolchildren walking home thank goodness it happened when it did.

Also with this incident we get two removed for the price of one because it sounds like the police know who the shooter is and he will be in jail soon.

  10. I was riding my bike from the Lake back into the neighborhood when I saw the police activity/yellow tape and gathering of people in the area. I initially asked the police what happened when they responded, "nothing". I explained to the officer (a woman officer) that, since I live in this neighborhood, where violence has significantly increased in the past year, I felt that it was important for me to find out if this was another daytime shooting. I rode around the barriers, where several bystanders were discussing the situation, both gang members and regular neighborhood residents and/or professionals. The "gang members" seemed to very well know what took place, yet no officials were questioning them. Several neighborhood residents all had the same story to tell. The victim and his gang physically beat up members of another gang last week. The victim was shot by the gang member who was beat up in retaliation for last week's incident. Period. This seemed to be very well known among many different people.

  11. The vic was a known and active gang member, as was the shooter the police are looking for and the other scumbags taken into custody. I am sure they all have extensive criminal and juvenile records. Hopefully they will charge and convict all three - four fewer scumbags on the street. They will most certainly sing like birds as soon as they are formally charged with murder and attempt murder. Thank god no innocent people were injured in this shooting.

  12. AS A FORMER RESIDER OF UPTOWN I REALLY DON'T APPRECIATE A COMMENT LEFT ABOUT THE DEATH OF MY FRIEND TIMOTHY PITTMAN......HIS DEATH WAS ON BEHALF OF HIS ACTIONS YES EVERYONE KNOWS THAT BUT TO SAY THAT THAT WAS WHAT HE DESERVES IS WRONG! MAYBE IF THERE WAS A TIGHT SECURITY INT HE UPTOWN AREA THIS WOULD'NT HAVE HAPPENED.PEOPLE NEED TO BE MORE CONSIDERATE ABOUT WHAT THEY SAY BECAUSE GOD DON'T LIKE UGLY. R.I.P. TO MY BRO TIM

  13. If you want to be in a gang this is what you get; please don't come here saying he "didn't deserve it" ... and then throwing God's name into it. I'm sure if there is a God, he will give him his justice also.

It's hard to hide your actions under the watchful eyes of God.

  14. Uptown, are you suggesting that we feel sympathy for you or this thug that you claim is your friend? If so, forget about it. We don't. It's his kind that have ruined neighborhoods for years now and make people prisoners own their own homes. I say good riddance! He received what he deserved. Had he chosen a different lifestyle, then perhaps we would feel some sympathy but he didn't.And as someone else said, one down many more to follow. At least I hope. You talk about "tight security" as if you know what that means. You would more than likely be one of the first to complain about "tight security" if you or your thug friend were caught up in that "tight security". Stop being an enabler or an apologist for your thug friends. They have chosen the way they want to live, not the rest of us!

  15. Uptown, there's no arguing that Timothy Pittman had friends and family who loved him. But he chose a violent lifestyle, and he died violently as a result. It was his choice to be part of the gangster life, and sadly, he paid the ultimate price for that decision.

I don't think "Uptown having tighter security" is an answer. This is not a police state, and how would you suggest tighter security? This is the FIRST place people complain about over-zealous cops and "racial profiling" and harassment based on appearance.

I don't think society can take the blame for Timothy's death. It was the gang lifestyle, and ultimately his choice to be part of it.

I'm sorry for your loss of a friend and for his family's grief. No one should have to die on a dirty street for a stupid reason. I'm sorry for Timothy and the choices he made, and I can only hope and pray that some young kid learns from it and chooses a different path when presented with a choice.

  16. uptown...

Since you chose to invoke God, wasn't it Jesus Christ who said, '...for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword'?

I feel more sympathy for the 44 men and women who had their tires slashed for no good reason than I have for this friend of yours, and I see no need to apologize for that. I'm just glad there's one less banger on the streets...

  17. You don't enlist in the Army thinking its going to be like day camp. -If war breaks out, you will find yourself with a gun in your hand, facing off against many others who are trying to kill you.

Same holds true for joining a gang. You know going in that gangs do violent things. They don't sit around all day reading Tolstoy and finger painting. You join a gang, you might as well sign your death warrant.

It is funny to me, that almost always after a gang member is killed, the family and friends come out about how he was a 'good boy' and he was 'out of the gang' or never was in a gang, and he was active in church! This is always flanked by an 8th grade graduation picture.

Sorry, the family knew he was in a gang, his friends knew he was in a gang. Yes, its sad that he was killed, but that is the role in life he chose. Yes, he chose it.

I saw the memorial the afternoon after it happpened. His gang buddies standing around, every last one of them in white shirts, with lit candles and graffiti on the wall. Great way to memorialize your friend - deface someone else's property. -

So sick and tired of Uptown, and all the excuses I read everyday on this blog why its wrong to complain about these issues, and why we should just suck it up.

So sick of the excuses, and lack of personal responsibility.

  18. If the police had killed the shooter, which would have been FANTASTIC, I'm sure we would hear the same nonsense about him. He was turning his life around, had left the gang, went to church, loved his family and his multiple kids, was a victim of his environment.... Then his family would sue the CPD and the city and probably receive an out of court settlement to make it go away. Once the police arrest the shooter, we will have two scumbags off the street. GOOD RIDDANCE to both.

  19. Just to play devil's advocate here, so to speak...isn't it common for kids who actually DO leave a gang to continue to be vulnerable to attacks from their past associates?
As I understand it (not from first-hand sources, ok), if a person wants to leave a gang, s/he has to "go through the line" and get one final beat-down from fellow members as a reverse initiation ritual. This is supposed to settle all scores, assuming the former member survives the ordeal. However, there may still be someone with a grudge to settle who doesn't know/care that this person is out of the gang and no longer "fair game." The result is a dead or injured ex-gang member.

I'm not saying that this was or wasn't the case here; I'm only telling you what I've heard.

  20. HIS DEATH WAS ON BEHALF OF HIS ACTIONS YES

Stop right there. You pretty much answered your own question.

BUT TO SAY THAT THAT WAS WHAT HE DESERVES IS WRONG!

No one here said he "deserved" to die. What they are saying his actions led to his death. It's a fact that you and unfortunately he seem to miss

  21. boo hoo, another thug bites the dust. I just wish the rest of the bangers would eat their own bullets or drink some special kool-aid to save this community the fear of walking out the front door & the hassle of even trying to get a response from Schiller. I have no sympathy for these evil lil bangers. It's the neutrals that get caught in the cross-fire & their families that really suffer. They think they'll have some great legacy and become some bad-ass OGs. The truth of it is that they will be quickly forgotten and replaced by some new piece of shit punk.
