  2. Another middle-of-the-day shooting??? Bold or stupid or both?

  3. Damn,

I must have missed that by mere minutes. I was walking east on Montrose and went right by there.

Lotsa people out to. Kids on bikes, cars driving by. Oh yeah, perfect day for a gunfight.

I await word from our alderbeast about this horrible event.

  4. Hey, Pirate!

Wanna have a drink while we wait? And wait. And wait?

We'll be dead from alcohol poisoning long before she comments.

  5. As much as I hate the daylight shootings -- heck, I hate them all -- they might be an indicator that the targets cannot be located at any other time than in broad daylight.

Also, in daylight you're unlikely to face a greater number of bodies that could return fire.

  6. Hey folks. I'm wondering if any of you would like to walk the neighborhood early on Saturday morning. Around 4am. I know most of these shootings have occured during the day but I thought it would be good to walk around when it's still dark and see what's going on, maybe take some pictures if needed. Just thinking an odd time with concerned citizens walking around keeping watch might throw bad folks off guard. We comment alot here, how about some action out there? Any one up for it? I'd like to get about eight of us.

  7. Chuck, I'm out of town this weekend, but would be willing to do this another day. I'd really like to do it in a group of at least five, more like 8. I've heard of gang intimidation of a group of three men walking around Clarendon Park in the early evening, so ... safety in numbers.

If we do this another weekend, I'm game.

  8. Before we get to 4am, let's focus on 7pm tonight - and the Fix Wilson Yard meeting at Buena Point 4350 N Montrose. If you're already home from work reading this thread, chances are you live within a short walk of the meeting location and can still make it!!

  9. As a scatterd site resident they often use "my building" to run and hide inside or run into to avoid the police. This is why I have to keep my children inside. My children and I can't wait for school to start. Chuck keep me posted about the walk. As a mom I would love to take that walk.

  10. were I work, we occasionally have police patrolling the area when we think there is a possible problem. If we can do it, why can't the city accomodate a murder area???

It's obvious it is a 1/2 mile radius....get the police out there to help us.

  11. are there specific units that the gangbangers run into in the scattered site housing? there is a link to a form to fill in for "gang houses". the police really like to get them. i can even fill it out if you provide the info. to me.

i can provide an e-mail if you would like.

  12. FYI....There was no victim found and no offender caught. The police only had witnesses and shell casings. A report for weapons violations was done to document the incident.

See, this is what I and a lot of other folks here were talking about. These thugs have to be using SOME place as their base of operatons, etc. I'm going to guess they know someone in that building and it's up to building management to find them and root them out, even if it means staying there beyond the usual 9-to-5. Good residents like this should have to cower in fear or change their way of life for people who probably don't even live there.

Anon, you should seriously follow up on the suggestion of filling out the "gang house" for and get other likeminded residents to do the same. i think you can remain anonymous too. And send a note to building management/the landlord about this and demand they do something. How are these guys gaining such easy access? Are there people letting them in? are there broken locks that just permit them to enter? Is some one living in the building giving them shelter? Your building management has to do SOMETHING. Cut off their base of operations and you cut off incidents like this.

  14. I live right across the street from a problem building. I know that all kinds of illegal activity goes on there but haven't ever actually witnessed it definitively. A lot of yelling and screaming can be heard at all hours, strrange looking people pull up in cars and go in while double-parking and leaving the car running. And the list goes on. My neighbor and I talk about filling out that problem housing form. My question is this: in order to report a problem, do you need to cite a specific incident or is suspicion based on "circumstantial evidence" enough?

  15. Matryushka please report that house. actually can you let us know what the address is of it?

  16. Matryushka: Your story is a good example of where video and photo surveillance on your own property financed by homeowners can gather vital information that may be used to lead to arrests or at least investigations.

I'm not going to be able to record what's happening in front of my building to be used as the primary evidence, but it could tell me a whole bunch of things about a problem area that I would only learn about if I sat by my window all day and all night.

  17. The exact address is 4446 N. Magnolia. It's the red brick building next to the building that sits right on the Sunnyside Mall. The building I live in has not formed an association yet, and although I have forwarded the developer all the recent information about trying to get video cameras on properties surrounding the mall, he does not appear to be interested for reasons of his own, probably that it would not be attractive to prospective buyers.

The other thing is that only a handful of residents in my building really care about what is going on at SM. The rest seem to have a knack for staying ignorant despite what we see every day. I mean, one neighbor was surprised when another neighbor and I were on our way to the Nat'l Night Out Against Crime/CAPS meeting and mentioned the Sunnyside Mall. You should have seen the look on his face when we said "Sunnyside Mall"! He was surprised and for a second excited....until we realized what he was thinking and had to inform him that no, it wasn't the kind of mall with a Banana Republic and a Gap! He has lived here for several months now.

What can I say? Apathy and a sense of not wanting to be involved rule in this building for the most part. If saving your own ass isn't incentive enough, maybe we can try to get free gift certificates to the above mentioned stores to generate some interest. At least you'll look good at your funeral if you do get caught in some meaningless crossfire and no one is held accountable.

I will now go and cool off. Thanks for tolerating my cynical rant.

  18. We had a drug dealer in the building next to us. There would be lines of random people entering and leaving at all hours of the day. Eventually someone in my building was attacked by some of his "customers".

That is when my condo association decided to put up our own security cameras. They were relatively cheap and record through a DVR provided by our cable company. The cameras are small, but enough of a reminder to the criminal element to do their business elsewhere.

These cameras ended drug dealing next door and any building in Uptown that wants to secure their neighborhood can do the same.

  19. pablo, my building is interested in getting security cameras. Where did you get yours? I heard costco was a good start. Do you have a recommendation for me? Thanks for your help...

  20. pablo: Email me please. I'd like to talk about your camera experiences.

Above is a link from the UU where someone provided info about our cameras in the comments section. I am not on the board of our building, so I don't know the exact cost.

Comment #8 is from my building

  22. Matryushka - also, call 911. At CAPS - the police said call 911 even if you see something that LOOKS suspicious. Since then, I have. It sounds silly calling 911 without what may seem to be a valid emergency, but the police have shown up.

Also, I do have a digital camera and have complained to the police about a drug dealer living across the street from me. last week - he was out there selling - and I took several photos of him. They were taken from across the street without his knowledge, but the turned out pretty good. I emailed them to our District Commander - Kathleen Boehmer. At least now, they know where this guy lives - and what he looks like.

  23. Thank you for all the suggestions. I need to make a habit of carrying my camera around with me. I will definitely be filling out one of those forms and calling 911 a little more.

  24. Hey Anonymous- No walk tomorrow morning. You and I are the only ones who expressed interest. I'll keep the rest of my thoughts about "all talk, no action" to myself.

  25. Chuck -- give a little more advance notice to people, take it out of the comments and ask UU to post it as a main item, and provide an email address to people so they can ask questions.

If the cops can get a group of people to bike around Uptown at midnight, I'm sure you can get a few walkers.

I'd like to... on a weekend when I'm not 500 miles away from Uptown.

  26. Truman- I asked UU and they suggested posting in this particular news item. You, The woman with the child, and me were the only ones interested. And meetings have recently been organized for weekday evenings in the same amount of time with more success. In a previous post we disected the "true" meaning of sacrifice and I honestly don't think anyone was willing to "sacrifice" their Saturday morning sleep-in. I get up five days a week at 4 a.m. for work and one at 5:30 a.m. and was still willing to do this. On my ONLY day off.

I guess I was just trying to get some action going that wasn't a meeting and gripe fest. "Talk is cheap" and "Actions speak louder than words" as we've seen with these latests gun shots. And I thank you, Truman and Anonymous, for being willing to make that sacrifice of your mornings. I will try again in a couple of weeks. Oh, and my e-mail is in my profile.

  27. More and more shootings in our uptown. The alderman acts like she does not even care. If you call there they have a simple answer...They told me if I did not like the shootings I should move into a area that will make me happy....Now I see how our alderman works and I say vote her out and get a alderman thats is there for us not the gangs and low-lifes she loves so much.....
