Signs Of The Past

From 1908-1910, Chicago changed the way it numbered its buildings to the now-familiar and very handy system of eight blocks to a mile, major cross-streets every 400 numbers, and a starting axis of Madison and State.

You can still see some remnants of the old numbering system around Chicago. Irish Pirate was kind enough to snap some photos of the "old ways" on Uptown's Kenmore Avenue. The pre-1908 building that used to be 1529 is now 4016-18; the "McDougall" (and how cool is it when buildings have names?) that was 1537 and 1539 is now 4026-4028.

For more information on the numbering change, check out Chicagology and the Encyclopedia of Chicago; for more photos of the "old numbers," go to the excellent Forgotten Chicago website.

  1. Mention of Irish Pirate brings up his latest post---Helen Shiller's campaign contributors. It seems that very few "Citizens for Shiller" are actually citizens of the 46th ward. Apparently, her gloriousness extends far and wide throughout this land. It has even reached the great state of Washington where Perkins Cole/Perkins Coie LLP and also True Blue (Labor Ready) have donated to her coffers. Check out the report for yourself. You'll see a few other out-of-state concerns but mostly landlords/slumlords in this ward and other folks with some ritzy addresses.

  2. Read all about Shiller's Campaign Disclosure and her contributors here. Now with vitamin enriched snark.

$500 from True Blue. That is so nice of them.
