Side Street Resurfacing

Does anyone know why so many of Uptown's side streets -- which didn't seem to be in bad condition at all -- have suddenly been stripped of their top layers, presumably for resurfacing? Was anyone notified about this in advance? We've seen rough pavement all the way from Beacon to Kenmore.

Just our opinion, but with the rotting sewer pipes underneath the streets being in such bad condition that they were one of the excuses reasons for the Wilson Yard TIF being funded, wouldn't it make a lot more sense to work on what's underneath the streets rather than resurfacing them?

  1. I thought it was strange last year when Magnolia was repaved. As far as I could tell the street looked pretty damn good before they tore it up and repaved it. I also found it interesting that the drains seemed too clog up more after the paving was completed. When it rains you can grab a six pack and relax on your favorite inflatable donut in the massive pools of water that sit in the street for weeks. I can't tell you how many times I called 311 about the water. I also thought it was interesting when the water mane burst through the newly paved asphalt.

Something else I thought was strange when they repaved Magnolia. lets just say watching the workers reminded me of a Sopranos episode. You get my drift....right?

I'll tell you what street does need to be repaved, Berwyn Ave. I was almost flung from my bike the other night after hitting pothole after pothole.

  2. My assumption is that these streets are all on a "schedule" of maintenance and it's probably cheaper/easier to just hit them all at once in a straight shot.

Kenmore is pretty bad in a lot of places and I was pleased to see they will start work today on my block.

  3. hey, any positive city services we can get are great. Now, if only the can repave one block east, the block of Sheridan between Wilson and Lawrence, now that would be impressive!

  4. The no parking signs popped up over the weekend saying cars had to be gone by Monday. Thanks for the notice! I emailed Shiller's office Monday morn. asking about the signs on parts of Kenmore and Leland, and they replied back it was for street resurfacing.

  5. I can't get over some of you people will never be satisfied. You'll piss and moan if nothing is done and you'll piss and moan when something is done. Some of you will complain about everything under the sun and do nothing to contribute to the remedy. "Oh no I can't park my car on the street for a few days, I may actually have to walk a block."

  6. Ihatemondays, I don't think it's about the cars not being able to park on the street (although there's a lot of that).

What it's more about is knowing that we have rotting water pipes that burst ALL WINTER LONG and that the bright and shiny new streets will have to be dug up within six months.

Since the Wilson Yard TIF was funded for the ostenstible purpose of repairing the rotting pipes, it seems crazy to fix the surface of the streets instead. Kind of like putting icing on a two-year-old cake and saying "voila!"
