Artistic Spaces In Uptown

We've recently become aware that Uptown has several places where your creative side can find an outlet.
  • Music: The People's Music School, 931 W. Eastwood, is a labor of love for founder Rita Simo, and provides free music lessons for its 350 students, but has limited space for new enrollment. Attendance is mandatory and students must do community service. It's the only tuition-free community music school of its kind in the United States.
  • Art: ArtWorks, 4654 North Racine, is a community arts and culture studio that provides creative space for everything from whittling to knitting to line drawing. Workshops are $10, and Wednesday nights are free. Activities are led by School of the Art Institute of Chicago and community artists. Check out the Open House on June 1st.
  • Writing: The Uptown Writer's Space, 4802 N. Broadway, "provides Chicago writers with a dedicated workspace and the supportive community you'd find in a writing program or artistic residency." Check out the article the News-Star ran about it a couple weeks ago.
