Someone's Got Some 'Splanin To Do

A reader writes in:
"I received an interesting phone call from a Mr. Nick Carbone of Medill Journalism School, who is following the day labor situation for a possible story. He filed an FOIA and got all the docs presented at the appeals meeting.

I brought up the ‘about 50 letters’ that Ald Shiller said all supported the facility.

He stated that in his FOIA finding that there were 80 letters in opposition and 7 in support (after discounting ONE, which we now know did not support this)."

  1. Okay, I'm going to say it. Helen Shiller is a liar.

The really sad part is that I don't believe most people are surprised that she lies.

  2. How can we review these FOIA documents? This is really revealing news. So the lies and manipulation are finally revealed.

Free at last, free at last, we are all free at last!

  3. I'd also like to see these FOIA documents, but more importantly, I'd like to make sure that the Zoning Board knows about them. Can the reader who got the phone call from Medill please write a letter to Zoning Board or better yet, have his/her Medill contact do it as well?

  4. It would also be a good idea to forward any information about those letters to the Suntimes and Tib. I do not believe we are the only area who's alderman lies about the community support for zoning changes. This with her refusal to talk about Wilson Yard's timeline and the development for Maryville's property on Montrose paint quite a picture. It would be nice for the media to connect all the dots.

  5. The trib and the sun-times either don't get it or don't care. people have contacted them throughout the course of the story. some say a reporter from the trib stopped in at the zoning meeting. no story.

shiller wants the permit to go through and daley knows about it. we all know that if he had felt it necessary to intervene, he would have. he didn't. why would the trib and the sun-times get into a tussle over this? it is like they only get a small quota for negative stories each year. we're only in march. they probably don't want to waste good will on this one.

  6. Newspapers pick their battles and want to use their space for stories that sell papers. Maybe they realized Labor Ready wasn't the battle, it was part of the much larger story about Aldermanic decision-making overall. BUT people over there do pay attention, especially when it's relevant (i.e. Metro writers and metro topics). Keep emailing information to them. And p.s. names and contact info of Trib writers are all listed on the website.

  7. Just because there were more letters against doesn't mean that those 7 letters weren't important too. Congresspeople always get a bunch of form letters but if a few people take the time out to write real letters, they deserve to be considered. Sheesh.

Your indignation smells like disingenous bullcrap to me. No one here has claimed that the seven letters you cite weren't important. That's not the issue! The issue is whether Shiller gave false information to the commission about the level of community support for Labor Ready. So don't try to change the argument to one you're more comfortable with.
