Nick Needs Your 'John Hancock'

From "Magnolia Malden Neighbors" and Kathy Cook

"Nick's on Wilson" is applying for a 4am license, and needs signatures of residents on Magnolia, Racine, Clifton, and Wilson in order to have a successful application. Nick's has always been a good neighbor at his other establishments which all have 4am licenses. He has security at the door and video cameras will be installed in the near future. Nick will be ringing doorbells to garner signatures, or you can just stop by the bar, and tell the bartender you want to sign the petition. I stopped by last night and signed my name. I sure don't want another empty storefront!

  1. I'm curious what kind of crowd Nick's would get from 2-4am. From the limited knowledge and experience with that bar, it seems like a place with a mellow interesting crowd and good vibes, but I still wonder how this would work out...

  2. From my experience, the Nick's Uptown location on Sheridan is rockin' in the late hours. The vibe on Wilson does seem more mellow, and it's a smaller place too. But most late bars attract people that want to stay out late and get drunk. But really, would people against the idea be worried about the stretch of Wilson east of Racine being grosser than it already is though?

  3. I would suspect that the late night drunks who go to Nicks are far less likely to mug you than certain other late night drunks in that area!

  4. I actually know 2 of the bartenders there from an old bar I used to live next to, Grizzys. They are all about playing cool music and talking to the customers, very friendly. Of all the times I have been in there it is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The only concern I would have being open till 4 is people walking home drunk at that hour. Lots of crazies out and about at 4 am.

  5. I like Cappleman in the picture - it's like he's the new Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval for new things in Uptown :)

(No knock intended on either Cappleman or Nicks, both are great!)

  6. I am unable to comment about how they run the bar because I just don't go to bars that much, but as Jerry Seinfeld would say, "Not that there's anything wrong with that!". However, I am extremely proud of the way they have been an incredible neighbor to Buena Park Neighbors Block Club when they do their Easter Basket drive each year. They also hosted a gathering of block clubs last year and that was a blast.

The owner understands the importance of making the outside of his establishment attractive and added some outdoor lighting. He has a sign up that encourages patrons to be good neighbors to the area. We're lucky to have him in the area.

  7. Just for clarification...this whole post came from an email update received from "Magnolia Malden Neighbors" and Kathy Cook. We highlighted this fact at the top of the post tonight, but it has always been there. The photo was also in the email update and was not some random photo we chose to add.

  8. Thanks Uptown Update. I see no controversy with my photo. At the time the photo was taken, Nick's business had recently opened and the business was highlighted by UCC due to the ton of community outreach they had done at their Buena Park location. I was UCC board president at the time the photo was taken and I stood in as a rep of UCC to congratulate them on their opening. The photo first showed up on a newsletter that went out some time ago. I remain grateful for the wonderful work they have done in this community.

Am I for the 4 AM license? I would defer to the block club and the area residents because they are the ones who are affected by that decision. I would hope all people focused on this concern are active with the Magnolia-Malden Neighbors Block Club and CAPS to help address any concerns that may come up along the way.
