Thanks to an Uptown Update reader for some pictures of people using the Harris Bank drive-thru on Broadway as a sleeping facility.

  1. If you patronize Harris Bank, close your account and bank with someone who gives a shit about the community.

  2. How many overnight shelters are there in Uptown? There's no excuse for this.

  3. that's the problem most of helen's people are too good for all her shelters.

I would like a list of all shelters, half way houses and group homes in Uptown. Does anyone got that information.

  4. That's embarrassing. Someone should send those to the manager of that Harris Bank location. And I assume that sleeping on bank property is trespassing at the very least and worthy of a call to the police. They absolutely should be sleeping at a shelter and not by a 24 hour ATM.

  5. FYI: One of the larger shelters in the area, the Salvation Army, does not do a summer shelter. I would imagine this same policy is in place at other shelters as well.

  8. These were sent in by a reader of the Uptown Update. We can only assume that he/she alerted the police. If anyone else sees this continuing, we ask that you call 911 also.

  9. Dumb question but is it actually illegal for someone to be sleeping in the Harris parking lot, on church steps or in the park? If so is that a 311 or a 911?

Thanks for all your hard work on this site, it's great!

  10. Well, I suppose use as an overnight shelter is an improvement to the Harris bank's drive through's former use as a drug stash - i.e. the little utility pipe with cover on the back side facing the Stewart School. And they think we didn't notice! Did you really think all those guys hanging in the alley and on the wrought iron fence out front of Dunkin Donuts were there because they have nothing better to do? Nope, that's their office and the Harris and the alley behind the Salvation Army are their warehouses. The Dumpster is their urinal.

  11. Each homeless person annually costs taxpayers over $40,000 in federal, state, and city benefits, which includes the cost of police services

  12. Sleeping on someone's private property is trespass, but action can be taking only if the private owner complains and if there is proper notice - ususally signage giving notice that the person should not enter.

The parks by statute closed at 11:00 p.m. and re-open at sun-up.
