Bye-Bye To Tree House's Former Safe House

For more than 40 years, the sprawling three-story building at 1212 West Carmen was home to Tree House Cat Shelter, a (mostly) no-kill, no-cage haven where literally thousands of kitties found safety.

Last summer, Tree House moved out of Uptown to a larger facility on the Far North Side (7225 North Western) where it can save even more lives.

Last week, the original building was demolished and only a few remnants remain to show what was there. Don't shed any tears for it - the kitties are excellent real estate investors! The shelter bought the house back in 1975 for $25,000, and in it sold for $875,000 ($80,000 over list price) in 2017. That 'll buy a lot of Fancy Feast and cardboard scratchers.

(We can only imagine what forty years and thousands of cats does to a building!)

What's next? According to the signs, the property is under the management of a firm that designs and builds custom single-family homes, so it should be fun to watch what goes up at that location.

  1. The land was worth all that money, not the bldg. so whether there were cat odors didn't matter at all.
