Now that he's in the last year of his second term, he's sticking with that. The 2019 47th Ward aldermanic race will have no incumbent.
So far there are six potential candidates, and who knows how many more will file between now and the deadline? The election is in February 2019.
According to the Sun-Times, former Rahm-Emanuel aide Michael Negron just filed candidacy papers. You can read more about him here.
In addition, these citizens would also like to be alderman in the Fighting 47th:
- "Social worker and abortion-rights activist Eileen Dordek, whose campaign raised $75,000 in the first three months of the year. Dordek’s contributors included another former top Emanuel aide, Beth Swanson, who gave food worth nearly $1,700 for a fund-raiser last month, according to campaign-finance reports.
- Matthew Martin, a civil rights lawyer in the Illinois attorney general’s office. Like Negron, Martin is a graduate of Harvard Law School. He says he has raised about $51,000 for his campaign.
- Chicago Public Schools teacher James Karalus.
- Marmalade restaurant owner Kosta “Gus” Katsafaros.
- Jeff Jenkins, co-founder of Midnight Circus in the Parks."
Pass the popcorn, it's going to be fun to watch.

Looks like some serious money and candidates gonna be playing in da fighting 47th.
ReplyDeleteI'd put my money on the first three candidates mentioned fighting it out based on money and academic pedigree.
I'm more interested to see who runs again Cappleman in the 46th ward.
I'm really jonesing to start trolling some fools. I'm outta practice.
In 2011 and 2015 candidates announced as much as 17 months before the election(waving at Denice Davis--wonder if she can see me from Ohio).
We have at least two people considering making a futile run against the Capplemaniac. One is just flat out mentally ill and the other seems to think that her perhaps three year tenure in the ward, left wing perspective, impressive academic pedigree and fabulous hair is gonna carry her to V I C T O R Y. Ain't gonna happen.
I do have some advice for her though and anyone else who runs.
1. Run to win. Expect to lose because you're going to.
2. Don't believe any pledge of support that you get from 46th ward lefties--outside JPUSA. The zombies on Wilson do get up and vote, but as for money either your or your family is gonna need to supply it because few local folks will give you a dime.
3. Prepare to be repel boarders. I live to troll during 46th ward campaigns and it's perhaps the only thing that brings a moment of joy to the dark dank emptyness that is my soul.
A. Don't take my trolling seriously--it won't have a substantive effect on the outcome of the race.
B. Read "A" again because in 2007 and 2011 people involved in the main campaigns against Cappleman took me too seriously and reacted badly. It didn't change the outcome, but it was fun to watch.
Surprisingly even in 2015 the Crawford campaign let my trolling get to them a wee bit, but were disciplined enough to make their mistakes in other areas.
C-F. I'm not going to give you those pieces of advice--you need to pay for that.
Seriously anyone running against Cappleman this round better be prepared to lose BIGLY.
With all the development going on the voters of this ward are going to turn out for him in BIGLY numbers.
He's generally well liked, will have big money available if he needs it, has the experience of having run and lost one campaign and won two others and has a ward with a whole lotta good things going on.
Take him on from the left or the right. He's prepared and ready to win. Take him on from both the left and the right and watch me mock your campaign into submission.
Now there is one legitimate reason to run and that's for the candidate to set up a run in 2023 if Capp doesn't run.
Cappleman won the 2011 election because of the good will and experience he gained in the 2007 election. He basically ran almost as an incumbent without any of the negatives of incumbency.
So run in 2019 and lose to set yourself up for 2023. Problem with that though is you need to run a credible campaign in 2019 and not be seen as a clown.
Now if Capp weren't running this round Amy Crawford would be in an excellent position to replace him. She won't likely run against him this round though because she couldn't raise the money she did last time, would lose badly and damage her chances in the future.
So then we're back to tweedle dee and tweetle dumber considering running. Alas. I had hoped for someone serious to troll--it's more fun.
