Godzilla Invades Uptown

Look what's coming to the former site of "Bangkok Video & Grocery"! Godzilla Sushi Bar confirms that its new location will open at 4617 North Clark, and they're hoping for October.

Picture of the work in progress from Godzilla Sushi's Facebook page.
The family-owned sushi bar opened in Jefferson Park earlier this year, with a menu that features everything on the menu for $2.95, and billed as "Fresh. Fun. & Fabulous."  If you can't wait for them to be in Uptown, you can check them out at 4945 North Milwaukee, right by the Jefferson Park transit center.  Or if you're the patient sort, check out the menu and figure out what you'll be ordering first when it opens in Uptown.

The 4600 block of Clark is slowly turning into a nice little restaurant row, with Tiztal Cafe, Thai On Clark, and El Ranchito. As the reader who sent us this photo says, "Now if only someone would buy the lovely Heidelmeier building."  We agree!

  1. So, are they planning on opening before or after Toho's American lawyers send them a cease-and-desist on that name? Because it doesn't bode well for their planning if they didn't bother to think about that.

    1. They've been open at their other locations for months.

      Just be happy about it.

    2. Happy about what? A small business making an easily avoided mistake that may put them out of business? Last year a New Orleans brewery tried to fight Toho on a beer named "Mecha Hopzilla" and lost. Just using the name and silhouette of Godzilla is legally much more clear cut. Supporting local businesses should include not encouraging them to do things that will affect their financial viability.

  2. Even if they weren't aware of the brewery incident (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/godzilla-rights-owner-slays-mechahopzilla-709358) or the lawsuit Toho filed over some blatant Godzilla use at Cannes (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/anne-hathaway-lizard-film-under-796883), you'd think the one they files against Subway for a guy in a more generic lizard suit (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=aBMSBgfy.ZD8) would've been a clue that Toho has American lawyers who aren't exactly lenient over other profiting over the Big G's name.
