From 2012 through 2014, Uptown was one of the participating sites in Open House Chicago, the one weekend a year when regular folks can gain access to interesting and/or closed buildings all over Chicago (for free!) Today the Chicago Architecture Foundation announced this year's sites, and Uptown is not among them.
While this is disappointing, this year's communities will include our neighbors in Lakeview, Edgewater, and Lincoln Square (among others). There are many buildings you may have wondered about, including:
- American Indian Center, 1630 West Wilson
- Our Lady of Lourdes (Ashland & Leland), which was famously moved across the street by "50 Men, Two Tractors, and Several Teams of Horses"
- Edgewater Beach Apartments, 5555 North Sheridan
- The Rooftop Airstream, 1807 West Sunnyside
While we don't usually recommend sites outside of Uptown, this is a great weekend to explore the city and places that usually off-limits. A full listing is here.
