Fire On Winthrop This Morning

The good news first.  It's out.  All residents are accounted for, and everyone is safe.

There was a multi-alarm fire at 4721 North Winthrop this morning around 10am.  It's a three-story vintage building a few doors north of Leland (and Christopher House).

Ald. Cappleman, who lives just a block away, tweeted during it"Major fire at 4721 Winthrop. Residents say all accounted for. Will make plans with community to help displaced."

"Incredible work on part of firefighters. Witnessed them on the roof of 4721 Winthrop when top floor fully engulfed on flames."

"Just spoke with family members, who have relatives in area. Will organize list of needed items and organize drive to help them out."

As usual, thank you to our incredible readers who shot these photos and let us know what was going on, with particular appreciation of MG and JM.  No cause of the fire has yet been determined.  A witness says there were popping noises, like firecrackers, which may have been windows popping during the heat.

We're so grateful no one was injured.  (You can click on the photos for larger versions.)

The CFD put the above photo on its Twitter feed, saying, "4721 north Winthrop. Still and box now out. Fire on three of three story 25x 100."  We're grateful they were here, and so brave.

Update:  A woman was hospitalized for shortness of breath, according to the Sun-Times. The fire was called in at 10:15am and out by 10:45am.  The Tribune says 11 people have been displaced.

  1. I thought that bulding was abandoned. It looked in rough shape, even before the fire.

    1. So does that make it ok. If you don't have any sympathy for the people who just lost everything they had or if you don't have any productive to say, keep your unnecessary opinions to yourself.

    2. Oh. So, if Wang Chung doesn't say the obvious--that no one wants to see peoples' homes and possessions go up in flames--that means that Wang Chung thinks it's "OK" and has no sympathy? I'd say that YOU are trying to put words in Wang Chung's post that weren't there, and if anyone needs to keep their unnecessary opinions to themselves, it's YOU, B-P BP. Now, please tell the readers of UU what you have done to constructively express your sympathy--did you go there and offer assistance? You aren't expressing any sympathy in your post either.

    3. Yes I was there all day.my family lost everything they own and to see people on here saying irrelevant things adds insult to the pain we are going through. This is a community forum for support and if you can't show any, you shouldn't be on here!

  2. I live 4704 of Winthrop, and it looks like some of these photos were taken from our building's roof. Am I crazy in thinking that?

  3. I thought it was possible that B-P was one of the people who had been displaced, and so was prickly and upset. In that case, we owe him/her some leeway and understanding. If not, and B-P is simply trolling and using the occasion of a fire to do so, then he/she deserves our contempt and pity.

  4. Uptowns Engine Company 83 and Truck Company 22 are the hardest working company in the city. In no other neighborhood do you find such a wide variety of different buildings from houses, 3 flats, 12 flats, storefronts and high rises. We should all feel safe these men know how to handle these fires. Always listen to the fire fighters at a fire scene. They know what they are doing. Obviously from the photos. Great photos.

  5. All first responders are top notch in Chicago. The Police do an awesome job while being shorthanded, which is the fault of elected officials. Thank God for CFD and CPD.
