Liquor Moratorium To Be Lifted; Mariano's Will Sell Booze

From Ald. Osterman's latest newsletter:

"On Tuesday, I hosted a community meeting with neighbors surrounding the new Mariano's at 5201 N. Sheridan Rd. In order for Mariano's to serve and sell alcohol, we needed to lift liquor moratorium 48.13 on Sheridan Road (from Berwyn on the north to Winnemac on the south, both sides of the street.)

80 community members attended the meeting and voted unanimously in support of lifting the moratorium. Additionally, many people who could not attend reached out to my office to voice their support.

Due to community approval, I will move forward with the City of Chicago to lift the moratorium which, per city ordinance, will stay lifted for one year before being re-installed."

  1. That last sentence is very puzzling. Why lift the moratorium only for a year? Is this some sort of provisional/test basis?

  2. It's a trial balloon, to give neighbors a chance to reinstate the moratorium if there are problems. It costs around $50K and takes years to get a moratorium put in place, all community-driven. The one-year mark is a time to reassess and see how lifting the moratorium is working out before lifting it permanently.
