My neighbor went shopping at [the Foster/Sheridan] Dominick’s today and an employee told her that the staff had just been told the store will become a Whole Foods. An inquiry to the store's customer service department was met with a quick "I don't know" -- so whatever's happening, it's not official until the announcement is made.
All Dominick's stores will be closing December 28th, so we won't have long to wait to see if this one is true.
I sure hope this is something comes to fruition so we don't have to watch yet another property fall apart over years of neglect. I also was hoping that it would not become a Wal-Mart Express! In any case, let's hope we can get another good big box grocery store in so the transition can be made FAST! Althought I don't like the idea of paying Whole Foods prices, at least this would offer a good option.
ReplyDeleteWhole Foods would be a great addition to Uptown, drawing shoppers from Andersonville, Edgewater and Rogers Park.
ReplyDeleteI'm excited to see the war between fashion McDonald's and Whole Foods for the all of our souls.
ReplyDeleteThank you, KyleMPalmer, for bringing a laugh into my morning!
DeleteHere are some things we do not need; currency exchanges, pawnshops, car title loan stores, liquor stores, or "mini marts". Any big box food chain would be a good addition.
ReplyDeleteI USE currency exchanges. A LOT. for money orders ($1) and transit tickets, so don't include them in what's not needed. I also use mini-marts to get newspapers and bottled water. So much cheaper than the super-grocery stores.
DeleteI don't want to see this turn into a thread about currency exchanges. Lianna, I believe the point Americanlt was making is that he or she doesn't want to see any more of the businesses s/he mentioned because there are an adequate number already. Also remember that Americanlt seems to be playing a role here as commenter, performance art maybe.
DeleteWhole Foods only moves into neighborhoods where they see potential of growth and a strong disposable income customer base. If this is true, it would be a good indicator of how they view the immediate area.
ReplyDeleteSame can be said of Target, but with a slightly cheaper clientele. Target wouldn't have spent the multiple millions on Uptown if they saw a future of more social services moving in. Here's hoping!! Someone had to move in as the store is still very new.
DeleteWhole Foods may have elitist connotations for some, but having one at Foster & Sheridan would be confirmation that our neighborhood has a future and encourage us to work together to make it so.
ReplyDeletethis is not for the masses in this neigborhood.. 2 expensive and we need a traditional grocer to compete with jewel in this neighborhood...
ReplyDeleteWow! Whole Foods Market is going up everywhere. Well Whole Foods are Mariano's.
ReplyDeleteYay, I am so excited about this! Great add for Edgewater Beach.
ReplyDeleteWould this Whole Foods be along the same lines as the one they are opening in Englewood? I don't see Uptown having the demographic necessary to support Whole Foods unless they offered a lower price point. I know I can't afford to shop there, and I'm gainfully employed...
ReplyDeleteThe location is next to a country club and across the street from a retirement community that charges up to a million dollars to live there. I don't think Whole Foods-----if they are coming there, which is far from confirmed-------considers it comparable to Englewood!!!!
DeleteWhole Foods is destination shopping, not only neighborhood shopping. Along the lakefront, there is the one located in the 3600 block of Halsted and the next one is all the way up in Evanston. It's a good location to fill in the coverage gaps. All those people living in pricey SFHs in Edgewater need places to get flaxseed oil, too!!
The location is at the Uptown/Edgewater border and the lake. I live 3 blocks north (no, not in a high rise, no I am not rich) and I think the area is beautiful. I love living here and I am excited to finally have a Whole Foods in the area. I also happen to work in Englewood. Coming home from work is like coming home from another planet. There is absolutely no comparison between the 2 areas. Given that this store will be almost immediately off LSD, I think it will do fantastic. I used to live in Uptown, so I think I know what you're trying to say, but Uptown has resources, recreation and diversity and Englewood has basically none.
DeleteBoohoo, there are additional Whole Foods markets in Lincoln Park at 1550 N. Kingsbury St and their Lakeview location at 3300 N. Ashland; you don't have to travel all the way to Evanston to find another store.
DeleteWhile I do not shop at Whole Foods, I do like their products, especially the meat counter. I think they will do well, due to the changing demographics in the area. While I'm more likely to shop at the new Mariano's, I welcome them to the neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteThe clerk at the checkout told me this, too!
ReplyDeleteThe clerk today told me the same thing and that it will be made public next week. She said it was unclear if the staff will be kept on or not, and that she had been there 20 years (with Dominicks) and was clearly not jazzed about the situation. She said people can write to the alderman and to Whole Foods about in support of keeping on staff if they wanted to, which I will do. I find the staff there very friendly and helpful.
ReplyDeleteWhole Foods in Uptown/Edgewater... who woulda thunk?!
Would rather have a Mariano's or Kroger . This saddens me.
ReplyDeleteWas informed by a friend with inside info that WF passed on the Foster location and will be opening at Broadway/Thorndale instead, but only after closing for a year to bust up the union. Not sure what is in store for Foster & Sheridan. At this point, it's anyone's guess...
ReplyDeleteMariano's:
