In the 1920s, the entertainment industry standard was Motion Picture News, keeping track of new theaters, new studios and what actors were earning how much. The Uptown Theater opened on August 18, 1925 (Happy 88th Birthday!), and in its November-December 1926 issue, in an article entitled "Ultra Modern Theaters," Motion Picture News included the sketches above.
Remember, these aren't someone's fond, rose-colored memories of what the Uptown looked like in its heyday. This is actually How It Was.
What we see now is magnificent enough, but these pictures show how grand, how ornate, how breathtaking the theater was when it first opened. Will it ever look this good again? Time will tell. We certainly hope to see it in our lifetimes.
